World Marriage Day, February 10th at 2:30 pm at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Those celebrating 25, 50, 50+ years of Marriage in 2019 are encouraged to attend. We are one body, one spirit in Christ. We, as the body of Christ, celebrate our faith just as millions of people before us have done for two thousand years. We hear our salvation story proclaimed to us in the Scriptures, and we celebrate the Eucharist. We remember that the body of Christ includes all of those who came before us, and all those across the world right now who profess the same creed. It will continue to include all who are baptized into the faith and who strive to follow the commandment of the Lord to love one another. For as Saint Paul says today, in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit. One faith, one baptism, one body. But infinite individuality; with unique gifts, charisms and missions all for the sake of the body. All with a purpose designed and graced by God. All with honor and dignity for the sake of the Gospel. And all of this is possible because of God s laws and promises; The law as a means of signifying that God is for us. God will work for us, he will fight for us, he will take care of us and we will delight in his laws if we will only trust in him. And God s promises that adhering to the laws will bring full, lasting and eternal joy. This is what the community of Nehemiah heard and understood when Ezra read to them, as told in our first reading for today s Mass. They wept first with lament at their failures, and then with joy in their understanding of God s love for them, and his promises of redemption. And in our Gospel we see that promise fulfilled, as the scene echoes that of Nehemiah; Jesus reads to the community from the scrolls of Scripture. We are one body, one spirit in Christ. May the grace of the sacrament we celebrate today strengthen each one of us, and the entire body as a whole, for the good of the world and the glory of God. I am a bit late in my THANK YOU for the beautiful Christmas season at the Church. A special thank you to the Choir under the direction of our marvelous organist Jack Kempf. To our Altar Servers, Eucharistic Ministers and Lectors who enhanced the beauty and dignity of our Masses. I am grateful to our maintenance men Mark, Steve, Bill and Gerry for all they did to beautify the church and for all who came to decorate the church. To our parish staff who insure the smooth operation of the churches and rectory. Special thanks to Msgr. Kennedy, Father Karlen, Father Tormey and Deacon Nick Rosher for their generous presence to enhance the Masses and everyone who came to Mass. Remember God loves You and so do I. Fr. Hearn

5 Page Five Dear Padre, What is the symbolic relationship between the altar and the Eucharist? The altar, also called the table of the Lord, is not just a piece of furniture. Many generations ago, our earliest Christian ancestors gathered at dining-room tables for the Eucharist, and through the centuries that simple piece of furniture came alive with deep meanings. It is from the altar that we share in the Eucharist, and the altar resonates with the presence of Christ. The altar is consecrated by a bishop and anointed with chrism, just as Christ was anointed priest, prophet, and king. The gestures and rituals of the Catholic Church shape the expression of our faith and our hearts. We bow and genuflect to express reverence, honor, and devotion. These gestures are used not only by Roman Catholics and other Christians, but by people of other faiths, including Jews, Muslims, and Buddhists. After the priest raises and shows the consecrated host and chalice to the assembly, he genuflects, and any concelebrants bow to the host. Eucharistic celebration, kissing the altar. The kiss is an intimate act of showing reverence and honor. The altar is a tangible sign of Christ and his sacrifice. We bow to the altar during the Eucharistic liturgy and outside of the Mass as well, because for Catholics it s the central place of our encounter with Christ and with the great communion of saints. Sundaybulletin@Liguori.org Pope Francis Speaks to Families What is God s plan? It is to make of us all a single family, in which each person feels that God is close and feels loved by him; as in the Gospel parable [of the prodigal son], feels the warmth of being God s family. The Church is rooted in this great plan. She is not an organization established by an agreement between a few people, but...she is a work of God, born precisely from this loving design which is gradually brought about in history. The Church is born from God s wish to call all people to communion with him, to friendship with him; indeed, to share in his own divine life as his sons and daughters.
