4 Page four Dear Padre, I know we re all supposed to use our gifts to glorify God, but what is liturgical dance? Is it acceptable as part of Mass? Are there rules surrounding it? Liturgical dance is dance movement forming a part of official worship. Through it, people in a community express their joy at God s blessings, foreshadowing the joy of heaven. Dance, in many cultures, is a sign of joy. We dance at weddings, birthday celebrations, and anniversaries. People from both Eastern and Western traditions use dance as a form of expression, and some incorporate it into their religious rites. Jewish worship includes dance on certain feasts, such as the Simhat Torah, where the holy scrolls are part of the sacred movement. In the United States, the practice of liturgical dance began to grow following Vatican II, but it was not readily accepted. Since dance in Western culture is viewed by some as an expression of love, intimacy, or diversion, the Church s approach is reserved. In 1975, the Vatican repeated this and said that because the Roman rite does not include dance as part of worship, inclusion of dance in liturgy is not appropriate ( The Religious Dance, an Expression of Spiritual Joy, Notitiae 11, ). We see dancing in our parishes and at diocesan celebrations; however, it should occur outside of the liturgy. Fr. John Schmidt, CSsR TO ALL THE WOMEN OF THE PARISH Join us on Saturday, October 21, 2017 for a day Retreat which will be facilitated by Sister Lois Ann Barton, CSJ The retreat day is entitled Will the Real Mary of Nazareth Please Stand Up! Snacks and lunch are included in the $10 Registration Fee. The retreat registration is 8:30 am in the Msgr. Culkin Parish Hall Seating is limited, so please register early. Call Toni at FAMILY PERSEPCTIVE Provided by the Hope Appeal Funds Every Family is visited by difficult times which can unite or divide. These hardships, which we would quickly reject, hold the potential to be the unifying cornerstone where we drop our pettiness and defenses and pull together, linked by a common bond and love for one another. In our first reading from Isaiah he uses the beautiful image of the vineyard in describing the people of Israel. It takes work to have a good harvest, just as it takes work to remain faithful to the Lord. In the second reading, Saint Paul encourages us to turn our anxieties over to the God of peace. In the Gospel, Jesus also uses the image of the vineyard, saying that the vineyard - the kingdom of God - is for those who will produce its fruit. By God s grace, modern medicine and science have made great strides in helping people deal with anxiety. Today, we are encouraged to know that being grounded in a good prayer life can also go a long way toward lessening the anxieties that disrupt the quiet of our hearts. We have begun some of the structural work to be done on the exterior of St. Mary s Church. We are also in the process of putting a new roof on St. Mary s School. We will also be doing some structural repairs on the front entrance of St. Peter s Church.. As our buildings begin to age we have to do some necessary repairs on our two beautiful churches. As you know St. Mary s is not closed it is an Oratory. As such we have Funerals, Weddings and Baptisms there and sometimes other spiritual events. Both buildings have to be maintained. We do not want to let these repairs go on for years without repairing and restoring them to continue to serve our parish. As you already know we have been repairing and restoring our toilet room in the front vestibule. Thanks to our maintenance staff (Mark and Steve) we have been able to keep the costs down as they have done all the work and have done it beautifully. Our repairs will be costing about $150, We will have envelopes available in the future to assist in your monetary help with our churches. Remember God loves you and so do I. Peace and Joy! Fr. H.

(St. Francis) CHOIRFEST SUNDAY, OCTOBER 8TH AT 3 PM At 1st Presbyterian Church, Court Street Free and open to the public Pope Francis Speaks to our hearts!! Unfortunately, what is thrown away is not only food and dispensable objects, but often human beings themselves, who are discarded as unnecessary. For example, it is frightful even to think there are children, victims of abortion, who will never see the light of day; children being used as soldiers, abused and killed in armed conflicts; and children being bought and sold in that terrible form of modern slavery which is human trafficking, which is a crime against humanity (Speech Jan.13, 2014) Next weekend our second collection Annual Mission Cooperation Plan will be for the support of HealthFriends Prescription assistance program The program started by St. Francis de Sales in Utica is the only one in the Mohawk Valley open four days a week to help the uninsured and underinsured get the prescription medication they need, but cannot afford it. People served are: The working class The recently unemployed Single parents and children awaiting CHP, Medicaid enrollment People on Medicare and with Medicine D Difficulties People whose insurance does not cover a particular mediation People needing medication to be discharged from hospital stay or emergency room People needing medication to enter treatment programs People who have actually been off their Medication for weeks due to a lack of funds People who have insurance BUT whose insurance does cover HIGH cost medication This program has assisted 13,286 persons and provided $14.5 million of prescription medication. We hope for a great blessing in our next weekend s collection.
