We will begin with a Holy Hour at 6 pm followed by dinner and a visit to the local ice cream shop. This event was a huge success last year. No one left with an empty stomach! We retreat to those we love looking for acceptance, listening, understanding and support. Families must be healing communities where Jesus is present in our care for one another.

4 Page Four Dear Padre, Is there any sense in suffering? A friend is in great pain, and I don t think she should have to suffer so much. No one should! The most popular book of Catholic devotion is The Imitation of Christ, written by Thomas à Kempis. He wrote this as he watched his best friends and members of his religious community suffer and die from the plague. Much of the book revolves around suffering. Thomas wrote that it was not deep words that made a person holy and upright, but a good life, lived in God s presence. He believed God walked with the simple, and revealed God s very self to the humble. For Thomas à Kempis, there is no solution to suffering except to put your faith in Christ. The Book of Job explores the mystery of innocent people experiencing misery and evil. Job suffers great pains and hardships, but he comes to the conclusion that faith in God must transcend personal pain and suffering. Jesus advises his followers to take up their cross and follow him (Matthew 10:38, 16:24; Mark 8:34; and Luke 9:23, 14:27). Saint Paul reminds us that we suffer with Christ so that we may be glorified with him (Romans 8:17). The epistle of James challenges Christians to consider trials of any kind as nothing but a joy (James 1:2). We all suffer. It s part of life. Our faith in Jesus is the bridge that can lead us over the chasm of suffering to the place of peace that many of the early martyrs and saints found. Sundaybulletin@Liguori.org In the first reading from the Book of Wisdom, we hear that God does not delight in death, but rather loves creation, and made us in his image. In Saint Paul s Letter to the Corinthians, Paul makes clear that we glorify God though our generosity. In Mark s Gospel, we hear about Jesus encounter with a suffering sick woman who simply wants to touch his cloak. Jesus affirms the woman not only by healing her, but also by telling her that it was indeed her faith that saved her. Because of her faith, her brief encounter with Jesus was transformative in her life. It is her faith, and his divine power, that allowed her to be healed and changed. Jesus wants us to be healed as well let us approach him with great confidence and faith, knowing that he can transform our lives. Thank You to our generous parishioners who have made a gift or pledge to our annual Hope Appeal. The programs funded by the Hope Appeal are our Hospital Chaplains, Catholic TV Mass for the Homebound, Faith Formation, Family Life programs, Catholic Charities, Tuition Assistance, Catholic Outreach Ministries and Vocations and these mentioned are just a few of the programs necessary for our diocese that are helped by the Hope Appeal. If you have not yet responded to this important Appeal, we ask that you prayerfully consider making a pledge to help support the needs of our diocese. Remember for years your gifts to the Hope Appeal have helped thousands of people through the programs and ministries funded by the HOPE Appeal. Please let us do this again this year by attaining our parish goal and YOUR gift will help. Let us continue to pray for the sick of the parish who are homebound or hospitalized and also remember their families. Please pray for Vocations to the Priesthood.

Communicating with God In the family we realize that others have preceded us; They made it possible for us to exist and, in our turn, to generate life and to do something good and beautiful. We can give because we have received. This virtuous circle is at the heart of the family s ability to communicate among its members and with others. More generally, it is the model for all communication. The Experience of this relationship which precedes us enables the family to become the setting in which the most basic form of communication, which is prayer, is handed down. When parents put their newborn children to sleep, they frequently entrust them to God, asking that he watch over them. When the children are a little older, parents help them to recite some simple prayers, thinking with affection of other people, such as grandparents, relatives, the sick and suffering, and as grandparents, relatives, the sick and suffering, and all those in need of God s help. It was in our families that the majority of us learned the religious dimension of communication, which in the case of Christianity is permeated with love, the love that God bestows upon us and which we then offer to others.
