Peter s Team 1 We are excited to expand our Family Faith Formation Program this year to include classes for families with students in grades 4 6. This program is an alternative to Monday evening/ Wednesday morning classes (which are still being offered as usual), and will focus on the weekly Sunday Gospel. The format is as follows: the 4 th 6 th grade student attends Mass every week, plus class every other Tuesday evening from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm with a parent or grandparent. We will also continue to offer Family Faith Formation for grades 7 and 8. Please contact the Faith Formation Office for more details * * * * * * * * The Faith Formation Team will be hosting an Open House on Monday, September 10 th from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Stop in to meet our catechists, look over our curriculum, and enjoy some refreshments. All are welcome! Classes begin the week of September 16 th. Registration packets are available at the church entrances, or you can download the necessary forms and schedules from our website: All families need to complete the Family Registration Form. An Individual Registration Form is necessary only for children who are new to the program this year. Please print the registration form, fill it out, and return it with your payment to the Faith Formation Office by September 10 th, or register at the Open House. Please contact the Faith Formation Office if you have a child entering first grade, or a new student to register. Upon your request, we will mail you a registration packet. 4 Page Four Dear Padre, Due to a car accident, my adult son is now impaired in mobility and speech. Can I, his father, accompany him in confession? If a penitent needs assistance in communicating to the priest, an interpreter may accompany this person into the confessional. A willing penitent can use the service of an interpreter if the priest, for example, doesn t having signing skills or know the penitent s language (Code of Canon Law, 983.2) (Your question suggests the priest wouldn t understand the penitent without assistance, or he s unable to write anything in advance to present to the priest.) The interpreter who has knowledge of the sins from confession is always strictly obliged to secrecy. This obligation applies to the sins expressed and to specific counsel and penance given by the confessor. Any interpreter who betrays a penitent may be punished with a just penalty, not excluding excommunication (Canon ). For the confessor, this secret, which admits of no exceptions, is called the sacramental seal, because what the penitent has made known to the priest remains sealed by the sacrament (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1467). Only those who have the use of reason are capable of committing mortal sin. Nevertheless persons with intellectual disabilities often are conscious of committing acts that are sinful to some degree and may experience a sense of guilt and sorrow (Guidelines for the Celebration of the Sacraments With Persons With Disabilities, 28). If the individual is capable of having a sense of contrition, even if the sin cannot be described precisely in words, the person may enjoy sacramental absolution. Fr. How can this man give us his flesh to eat? This question shows the amazing lack of faith found among some of Jesus followers. Their first mistake was to refer to him as a man instead of the Son of God. They wonder how he can become food for them, but many of them have seen his mighty deeds. In this very same chapter of John s Gospel, Jesus has been seen walking on water and feeding, thousands with five loaves and two fish. Clearly, he can do all things, including taking bread and wine and offering it as his own flesh and blood. The Eucharist draws countless people to Mass, to adoration and to Catholic church every day. Sadly, where there is light there are shadows. Many people who have left the Catholic church cite one of the reasons being that they no longer believe what the Catholic church teaches about the Real Presence of Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament. Statistics are alarming, but where Eucharistic faith is diminished, Mass attendance dwindles. Where Eucharistic belief is deeply tooted, faith flourishes. It is our job, we who believe, to reawaken the Eucharist faith of fellow believers and to go out and announce it to those who do not know that Jesus is the true bread sent from heaven. Why? Jesus answered that question for us Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. An added note: Father Hearn is doing well. He thanks everyone for their many prayers and phone calls. Keep up your concern and prayers.

KNITTING AND CROCHETING GROUP St. Mary s/st. Peter s Altar Rosary Society has formed a group to Knit and Crochet hats, mittens and scarves for the local school children We are looking to add knitters, crocheters, and those who want to learn how to join our group. We are also expanding our talents to have sewers join us. We have several ideas to make items on the sewing machine That can be sold at our craft show. A Perfect Family Does Not Exist More than anywhere else, the family is where we daily experience our own limits and those of others, the problems great and small entailed in living peacefully with others. A perfect family does not exist. We should not be fearful of imperfections, weakness, or even conflict, but rather learn how to deal with them constructively. The family, where we keep loving one another despite our limits and sins, thus becomes a school of forgiveness. Forgiveness is itself a process of communication. When contrition is expressed and accepted, it becomes possible to restore and rebuild the communication which broke down. A child who has learned in the family to listen to others, to speak respectfully, and to express his other view without negating that of others, will be a force for dialogue and reconciliation in society. SAVE THE DATE On October 13, 2018, a Womans Day Retreat will be held in St. Peter s Church Hall. Father John Rose, Director of Christ the King Retreat House and Pastor of St. Vincent de Paul s Church in Syracuse will facilitate the day of Prayer. The retreat will be open to all area parishes. Seating is limited. Reservations will be needed. More information will follow. FAMILY PERSEPCTIVE Provided by the Hope Appeal Funds In today s Gospel Jesus speaks of eating his flesh and blood. Parents can identify with this, for they often feel devoured by the demands of family life. This is unavoidable for children grow in the soil of sacrificial love. Parenting is not part work. It is a consuming lifetime commitment.
