4 Page Four Dear Padre, Every year, someone with a cold wants to shake my hand at the sign of peace, and sick people drink from the Communion cup. Can t parishes ban the cup and the sign of peace during flu season? Many people share your concern. As a priest, I am hugged by an entire congregation throughout flu season. If I m sick, I warn people as they approach, but some people want a hug anyway. For many, community fellowship wins out over prudence. Of course it would be best if those who are sick don t drink from the cup containing the precious Blood. But even if they do, receiving the precious Blood is more important to me than the slight risk of illness. However, if it bothers you that much, there s nothing wrong with electing not to receive the precious Blood. And instead of shaking hands and hugging at the sign of peace, try nodding and waving. If people don t understand and push for more, simply say, Don t want to pass on the flu. That should stop them. In today s society, far too many things keep us physically apart. I refuse to casually surrender anything that brings us together in love and fellowship except in dire circumstances, and for me, a normal flu season doesn t qualify. Fr. Amen YEAR OF THE FAMILY Four practical, powerful and effective ways to form a domestic church within our own families: PRAYER, WORSHIP, FAITH FORMATION COMMUNITY AND SERVICE In the first reading, the Lord promises Israel that he will raise up a new prophet, one who will speak with his authority. Saint Paul urges the Corinthians to remain free of worldly anxieties. In Saint Mark s Gospel, it is the unclean spirit that recognizes Jesus true identity and responds to his commands. Liberation is at the heart of our Scriptures a freedom that will liberate us from worldly anxieties and concerns, and from all that might hinder us in fulfilling our holy mission. Listening to and obeying God s Word prevents us from hardening our hearts and distancing ourselves from his presence in our lives. Paul s message of hope, along with Mark s encouraging message of Jesus power and promises, are a reminder that the Holy One of God has liberated us from death and sin that the difficulties and trials of this life are, in the end, overcome. We have certainty that with faith in the risen Lord, we are destined for an eternity with him. So let us go forward to the Eucharist in faith and sing joyfully to the Lord, as our psalmist says, coming into his presence with thanksgiving. For he is our God, and we are the people he shepherds the flock he guides. We received a very nice Thank You note from Mrs. Tanna Fries, RN the Nurse Coordinator for the Rome City Schools. The gifts from the Giving Tree have she wrote, shown support for the community by their generosity, commitment, kindness and gracious thoughtfulness. A special Thanks to Loretta Perry for her long term coordination of this important project for our Nurses within our schools. Please continue to pray for the sick of our parish who are homebound or hospitalized that God s healing grace with be for them.

5 Page Five ALTAR ROSARY SOCIETY During our Winter Break we would like the ladies of our parish to consider attending one of our 5 annual meetings to see what we are all about. We are active from September to June Our regular covered dish monthly meetings are the 3rd Thursday of the months of September, October, April, May and June. November and March we arrange our annual parish wide dinners for St. Patty s Day and Thanksgiving. December we arrange our annual parish wide Christmas Party. Winter Break are the months of January and February. Our customary fund raiser sales are bake sales held in the Spring and Fall and/or Religious Article Sale in December. We have a fun organization that continues to be creative in how we can benefit our parish and our parishioners, always open to suggestions. Bring your ideas and talent to our meetings. We encourage you to see what we are all about. We thank our parishioners for their continued support for without you our organization would be unable to make contributions to our parish on your behalf. Attention men of the parish, the theme for the 10th Annual IGNITE Men s Conference is 10 years of Building Your Faith Again we have 3 tremendous speakers that will challenge all who attend. You can be part of it on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at the SRC Arena and Event Center for an amazing day that will have a tremendous impact on you. Martyrdom The Highest Degree if Witness To proclaim the gospel, two virtues are essential: courage and patience (acceptance of suffering). They (Christians who are suffering) are in the Church of patience, They suffer, and there are more martyrs today than there were in the early centuries of the Church. More martyrs! Our own brothers and sisters. They are suffering! They carry their faith even to martyrdom, However, Martyr is never a defeat; Martyrdom is the highest degree of the witness we must give. We are on the way to martyrdom, as small martyr: giving up this, doing that...but we are on the way. And they, poor things, they give their lives, but they do so...for love of Jesus, witnessing to Jesus ENRICHING THE CHURCH Pastoral Letter on the Role of the Family in the life of the Church of Syracuse and Beyond (continued) When it comes to the modern family, in general there has been a shift in focus: from the things of heaven to the things of earth. It is no wonder, then, that in many families today faith is met with indifference or abandoned altogether, hope is shallow, and charity is confused with philanthropy simply doing nice things for others because it is a nice thing to do. For many, this has become their religion. The results of all this are drastic. The priests throughout our diocese often share with me that many of the struggles they currently face concerning the vitality of their parishes stem from then absence of families in general. May young people are no longer getting married, specifically in the church. When they do decide to come to the Church to get married, they often arrive un-catechized and with a long list of their own expectations.
