4 Page Four Dear Padre, When I look at the crucifix or think about Jesus, I often get impure thoughts about Christ. These thoughts come at the most unlikely times, and I don t want them. Is this a serious sin? You re not the only one with these obsessive thoughts. It s a rather common malady. There seems to be a certain perversity in the imagination of some people that make their thoughts return repeatedly to what they fear and dread. Impure thoughts about Jesus, saints, priests, religious, statues, or the crucifix God knows about these. God sees what s happening and how this troubles you. This doesn t shock or offend God. In addition to mentioning this during the sacrament of reconciliation, one approach is to talk about these thoughts to God in your own words. For instance, Dear Lord, you see into my heart, my mind, and my imagination. You know how obsessed I get with these terrible thoughts, how they keep returning, and how guilty they make me feel. But I don t know how to make them stay away. I have a crazy, mixed-up imagination. Or maybe in your prayers, a bit of humor will help. Lord, here is your weirdo child again. Those screwed-up thoughts are plaguing me once more. You know I don t want to consent to anything sinful, so I put my weirdo self into your hands. If you deal with these thoughts as if they re too terrible to discuss with God, they ll plague you indefinitely. But if you can learn to pray and talk honestly about them to God, you ll learn to see them in perspective. They re not horrendous, and you ll see these mountains as the molehills they really are. Sundaybulletin@Liguori.org EMERGENCY COLLECTION Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Relief October 27th and 28th Bishop Cunningham has been asked to take up a special collection in response to the devastation that has and will be caused by natural disasters like Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Michael. The emergency collection is intended to support both the humanitarian and Church needs arising from the hurricanes. The funds will be used to support efforts of Catholic Charities USA as they reach out to restore communities. WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA December 15th Ceremonies will be at 12 noon at the area cemeteries. Our reading from Isaiah s Songs of the Suffering Servant, while short, can often be easily overlooked as we rush to comment on the somewhat audacious and self-centered demands of the disciples in the Gospel. But Isaiah actually sets the scene for the Gospel passage by addressing the question of human suffering. As people of faith, suffering seems to go against our basic image of God as loving and caring, and in the face of the many expressions of suffering we are often left with the question how could God let this happen? Throughout history, many philosophers have attempted to answer the thorny question, for some, suffering is a divine punishment, for others a test or an a opportunity to strengthen faith or to show heroic virtue or fidelity. Yet in the end, it remains a mystery beyond our comprehension. As Christians, we often seek an explanation from Scripture...Isaiah tells us that the Lord was pleased to crush him in infirmity, and Hebrews tells us that Jesus was similarly...tested in every way. At first glance neither sounds helpful, but when we look again through the eyes of faith, we see that these words are not simply meant to explain through the eyes of faith, we see that these words are not simply meant to explain suffering, but to help us realize that even in suffering there can be good. The suffering of the Servant is not without purpose or meaning, for the prophet tells us that through suffering he shall justify many. The term justification is central here. It s term that implies that one has been acquitted and restored to right relationship with God, and that another has paid the price. Christ, in his suffering, has paid the price so that we can confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help. What gives us final hope is that not only did Christ experience suffering, as we do, but that he ultimately overcame it in the Resurrection. Our hope is that we now can share in that triumph. The lectures are less concerned with the contents of the Creed than in the journey toward rediscovering a basic sense of God today.
