4 Page four Dear Padre, If I m late for Mass, can I receive the Eucharist? There is no hard-and-fast rule on how late one can be for Mass and still receive Communion. Holy Communion is offered outside of Mass at times, so theoretically you could come during the Communion rite and still receive Communion. But there is more to be considered with this question. If you are going to go Mass, you should be there from the beginning to the end. You should be there before the entrance procession begins and you should stay until the last verse of the final song is sung. Things happen, like an unexpected train on the way to Mass or a sick child who needs attention and care. However, if you find yourself always coming late to Mass, you may need to make a change in your routine. I remember cleaning out a closet of a church I was stationed at, and I found a sign with ropes attached to it. It stated, Mass has begun, the next Mass begins at and there was a place where you could list the time of the next Mass. I was told the ropes were tied across the entrance so you couldn t come into Mass late. Those days are gone, though. It s up to you to follow your conscience. It is important to participate in the entire celebration, but if on the rare occasion you come late to Mass, ask yourself, Can I prepare myself to worthily receive Communion at this moment? If you can answer yes to that question, then I would say it would be OK to receive Communion. Fr. Bishop Moynihan was a fearless leader in the pro-life movement. He was dedicated to building a Culture of Life, promoting vocations, and strengthening Catholic Schools. The second reading reminds us that the Spirit helps us in our weakness, and intercedes for us according to God s will. In the Gospel, Jesus teaches about God s kingdom, and offers parables of grain and weeds to explain. Today we hear about God as a Father who is both merciful and just, about God who is mighty, and about the Spirit who comes to our aid. Let us turn to the lifegiving Holy Spirit for guidance and grace so may continue growing in holiness, so we bear an effective witness to the Gospel, and so we may experience Christ s gift of peace more fully in our lives and hearts. The Holy Spirit brings life and peace! The annual Hope Appeal is an important campaign to assist the many marvelous programs within our diocesan church. Your gift will assist the good work of Catholic Charities to assist the poor and disabled members of our community. The work of our chaplains in our health care facilities and also on our college campuses are supported by your kind gift. Vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life are encouraged through the work of our Vocations office supported by our Hope Appeal. Faith Formation diocesan program are supported by the Hope Appeal. A little smile an older woman is telling another woman about her new boy friends= I am seeing five gentlemen every day. As soon as I wake up Will Power helps me out of bed. Then I go see John who relieves me. Then Charlie Horse comes along, and when he is here he takes a lot of my time and attention. When he leaves Art Ritis shows up and stays the rest of the day. I am tired and I go to bed with Ben Gay. What a life!

A Heart Attentive to Jesus We must be magnanimous, with a big heart, without fear, always betting on the great ideals. However, this also means magnanimity in little things, in daily things - the big heart, the great heart. It is important to find this magnanimity with Jesus, in contemplating Jesus. Jesus is the One who opens windows for us on the horizon. Magnanimity means walking with Jesus, with a heart attentive to what Jesus tells us. ST. PETER S CHURCH HISTORY Host Families Needed for Exchange Students Each year the Rome Rotary Club welcomes foreign students to our community for the school year. A key need for each exchange student is host families. Typically a student lives with three different families through the course of the year. For 3 1/2 months each. In its 150 years as a Catholic parish here in Rome, St. Peter s has known only five pastors! The one appointed in 1950 to be its fourth shepherd was Rt.Rev. Msgr. Edward Patrick Buttimer, first, last and always a priest, But also a world traveler, literary scholar and church builder. When he took possession of the parish, his first promise was to build a new Convent for the sisters of St. Joseph who taught at the parish school. This was completed in 1954 and the present Convent building on Floyd is now Barton Place for assisted living. Later he demolished the old Scudder Block which was a landmark for many years and stood to the south of the church. He purchased all of the property east of the present rectory as far as the old Fire Station on E. Liberty to make ready for a parking lot. (to be continued)
