The choir will be joined by a professional chamber orchestra directed by Scott Rutledge. The concert is free and open to the public. We must be willing to entrust ourselves to another, to let go of our autonomy and die to our independence. It is in dying to our independence that we find interdependence with others.

4 Page Four Dear Padre, I feel self-conscious striking my breast at Mass. Isn t this gesture rather exaggerated? The Roman Missal proscribes that the assembly strike their breasts at through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault during the Confiteor. It doesn t specify striking three times. Later in Eucharistic Prayer I, the priest strikes his breast with his right hand, saying, To us, also, your servants, who, though sinners... Clasping our hands in front of our breast is a recognized gesture of prayer; striking the heart or breast is an ancient penitential expression. It calls to mind Jesus parable of two men who prayed in the Temple, a prideful Pharisee and a humble tax collector who beat his breast and prayed, O God, be merciful to me a sinner (Luke 18:13). Gestures, language, and actions are the physical, visible, and public expressions by which human beings understand and manifest their inner life (Built of Living Stones, NCCB/USCC, 2000). The liturgy has a rich tradition of movements that can foster or distract from prayer. When the gestures are done in common, they contribute to the unity of the worshiping assembly. Gestures which are broad and full in both a visual and tactile sense support the entire symbolic ritual (Environment and Art in Catholic Worship, 56). Thus, at Mass we bow our heads, bend our knees, and beat our breasts out of humility and reverence for God, for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted (Luke 18:14) Help - - Help - - Help We need Bingo helpers!!! The drawing will be April 8. This fund raiser benefits the Ministries of the Sisters. Thank you for your generous support Jesus is the new covenant. In the Old Testament, covenant commitments were typically sealed in blood and with sacrifice. In today s first reading, Jeremiah prophesies a new covenant that the Lord will make with his people the power of which can make the whole world into the New Israel. That covenant came in the person of Jesus. The central saving act of Jesus Christ was his shedding of blood as a sacrifice for us dying on the cross in order that we might share in God s life. Through the blood of that covenant all of us, Jew and Gentile alike, can share in God s divine life. With all this snow it is easy to become discouraged and maybe think the Lord has forgotten us. Father Blaise the Passionist Missionary was so excited about the snow that he took pictures to send to his Priest friends in California. In this snowy weather I am grateful to the many parishioners coming for daily Mass during Lent. On Good Friday we will once again reflect on the Seven Last Words of Christ. This three hour spiritual meditation time has been marvelously created by Father Karlen. We need readers for this beautiful time of prayer and peace. A sign-up sheet is available in the sacristy. A little smile = An elderly gentleman had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to the doctor and the doctor was able to have him fitted with a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100%. The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor said, Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again. The gentleman replied, Oh, I haven t told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I ve changed my will three times. Have a wonderful day! 5 Page Five ALTAR ROSARY SOCIETY The Parish and the Altar Rosary Society.about 75 persons total enjoyed St. Patrick s Day Party on Thursday. The food was delicious from Eddie s Dinner. The pies were a special Treat. We enjoyed a couple of games directed by Cindy Gould. We enjoyed the Irish Music presented by Jammin Sounds with DJ John Santiago. Our next meeting is scheduled for April 19th. We invite women of the Parish to join us for a Social evening and prayer. Are we living stones, or are we, as it were, stones that are weary, bored, or indifferent? Have you ever noticed how grim it is to see a tired, bored, and indifferent Christian? A Christian like that is all wrong; the Christian must be alive, rejoicing in being Christian; he or she must live this beauty of belonging to the People of God which is the Holy Spirit, to be an active part of our communities, or do we withdraw into ourselves, saying, I have so much to so; it isn t my job!? ENRICHING THE CHURCH Pastoral Letter on the Role of the Family in the life of the Church of Syracuse and Beyond (Continued) The teaching of the Second Vatican Council directs our attention to the fact that marriage is a vocation and call. It is more that simply a choice to enter into a union. It is the response of two people to God s call to enter into a lifelong, intimate partnership of life and love. For husband and wife, it is the way they live out the basic ands fundamental characteristic of a discipline of Christ, namely, love. It is the way they live out the universal call to holiness that we all share. Marriage and the family nor only form the foundation of society but are also the source from which come the members of Christ s Body, the church. The church is, after, the family of God So important is marriage to the family and the family to society and, most especially, to the Church.
