But when we look at the Consecrated Host enshrined in the monstrance is He as easily recognized? Pray for the gift of faith FAMILY PERSEPCTIVE Provide by the Hope Appeal funds The child born to Jesus and Mary was named Emmanuel, which means God is with us. Every child is EMMANUEL! Reminding us God is with us. Children are signs of God s continuing presence in our lives. The little baby in the manger, and the Man on the cross is Jesus Christ, the same One Who is in the monstrance in His glorified body, hidden within the Host. Take this opportunity to get to know Jesus a little better in His Eucharistic Presence so that He becomes more easily recognized. Consider signing up for an hour of adoration once a week. 4 Page four Dear Padre, Why is St. Joseph called the Worker? Shouldn t he be honored primarily as the father of Jesus? Devotion to St. Joseph has developed along an interesting path. It was not until the eighth century that Joseph, underneath the title Spouse of Mary, was even publicly acknowledged except perhaps as an afterthought or silent participant in the Christmas story. The Church has always acknowledged that Joseph s relationship with Jesus was unique, but there was, and continues to be, reluctance to call him the father of Jesus. We understand the father of Jesus is not Joseph but rather God the Father. A consensus about Joseph s role in the plan of salvation seems to be in place by the early fourteenth century. In 1870, Pope Pius IX declared Joseph the patron of the universal Church. By the early twentieth century, worldwide devotion had found a home at St. Joseph s Oratory in Montreal. The title of the Worker was used most often by Pope Pius XI in his references to Joseph as the patron of the Church s battle against atheistic communism. Pope Pius XII established the May 1 feast in 1955 to emphasize the Catholic teaching concerning the dignity of labor. Saint Joseph could be summarized best as a man who did the best he could when God s will became clear. This image and model seems the best and most helpful for deepening our understanding of and devotion to him. The first reading reminds us that the promised Messiah was to be born of a virgin, and was to be named Emmanuel. The second reading exhorts us, as followers of Jesus, to lead lives which are holy and pleasing to God. Today s Gospel tells of Joseph being faithful to the command he received from the angel of the Lord to take Mary into his home as his wife. God promised to send a Savior to the world, and Jesus came among us. In return, we are called to serve Christ and proclaim him to all. This is easily overlooked as we get caught up in our own pride, or focus on worldly matters. As we look to the Nativity of the Lord, let us shake off distractions and strive to serve Jesus and share him with others. God is with us, and we are called to live in the presence and take that joy out into the world every day. THANK YOU to all our youngsters for a wonderful Nativity presentation last Sunday at 3. And also to all who provided the wonderful social in the downstairs Church Hall especially Toni Belmont, Mary Simons, Gail Reilly, Jaime Reilly, Sandy Gotti, Colleen O Neil and all the men and boys who assisted them. I would also like to express my gratitude and the gratitude of the parish for all the fine work of the wonderful women of our parish Altar-Rosary Society. At the parish Christmas party they presented a $1, check for the Hope Appeal and $1, check for the Cathedral Restoration. Any woman in the parish is welcome to join this marvelous group that meet almost every month and do so much for our parish faith community. Please continue to pray for all our sick especially those who are hospitalized or in nursing care facilities and also for those who have recently have had loved ones die.

5 Page 5 ALTAR ROSARY SOCIETY The Altar Rosary Society thanks all who were so very generous with their baked goods and supporting the Religious Article Sale. The Society will not have their regular meeting during the cold winter months of January and February. The March meeting is scheduled for March 16th with a corned beef dinner for all in the Parish to enjoy an Irish night celebration with a sing-a-long of Irish music with Carlton Boone. Next meeting Thursday, January 12, 2017 at 7 pm 112 Ridge Street. Rome Bingo: 7:00 pm every Wednesday Doors open at 5 pm. There will be no bingo Wednesday, December 21st or Wednesday, December 28th. Pope Francis Speaks to our hearts!! Advent Waiting to Encounter Mercy Incarnate In the life of every Christian there is an experience of a personal encounter with Jesus Christ who called us to follow him and share in his mission. We must learn to treasure in our hearts the living memory of that call, when Jesus passed my way, gazed at me with mercy and asked me to follow him. Try to revive the memory of that moment when his eyes met years, the moment when he made you realize that he loved you. But so I remember it? Have I forgotten it? Have I gone off on paths that made me forget it? Mary sustains our journey toward Christmas, for she teaches us how to live this Advent season in expectation of the Lord. For Advent is indeed a time of waiting for the Lord, who will visit us all on the feast of Christmas, but also, each one, in our own hearts. The merciful Lord is coming! Let us wait for him! Call to learn more about the Knights!!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Tradition of the Christmas Crib Putting up the crib at home can be a simple but effective way of presenting faith, to pass it on to one s children. The crib helps us contemplate the Mystery of God s love that was revealed in the poverty and simplicity of the Bethlehem Grotto. St. Francis of Assisi was taken by the mystery of the Incarnation that he wanted to present it anew at Greccio in the living nativity scene, thus beginning an old popular tradition that still retains itsvalue for evangelization today. Indeed, the crib can help us understand the secret of the true Christmas because it speaks of the humility and merciful goodness of Christ, who though he was rich he made himself poor for us. His poverty enriches those who embrace it, and Christmas brings joy and peace to those who, like the shepherds in Bethlehem, accept the angel s words: Let this be a sign to you: in a manger you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes. This is still the sign for us too, men and women of the third millennium. There is no other Christmas.
