The emergency collection is intended to support both the humanitarian and Church needs arising from the hurricanes. 4 Page Four Dear Padre, I ve often wondered about the feasts of All Saints and All Souls. Are not all the souls we pray for also saints? Why not just celebrate a feast day for all those in heaven? In the New Testament, saint meant Christian. In some way, then, all followers of Jesus were originally considered saints. But over the centuries, the word saint has gradually come to connote the holy people declared saints by the Church. The canonization process sometimes takes centuries. (It took nearly 500 years for St. Joan of Arc to be canonized.) In 2,000 years of Roman Catholic history, more than 2,500 saints have been recognized. On the feast of All Saints, we honor these holy men and women, especially our patron saint and those saints for whom we have special admiration. The feast of All Souls honors loved ones who have died. It is safe to say that the Church has not officially canonized most of our family and friends who have died. As the Church gives official status to deceased holy persons by canonizing them, so too Christ s paschal mystery gives meaning to the death of faithful Christians. As it says in the First Letter of Paul to the Thessalonians: For if we believe that Jesus died and rose, so too will God, through Jesus, bring with him those who have fallen asleep (4:14). When we pray for our dead in purgatory or in heaven on the feast of All Souls, we acknowledge the mystical body of Christ, which includes us, family and friends who have died, and the officially canonized saints of the Church. To help call Bob Haley TREE OF LIGHTS December 2nd at 6:30 pm Honor or memorialize a loved one with the purchase of a light on the Rome Memorial Hospital Tree of lights. A $5.00 donation per name will help buy equipment for the hospital. Donations must be received by Nov. 16th for the names to be included on the scroll to be displayed in the lobby. The tree lighting ceremony and reception will take place in the main lobby. This year we are honoring Pastor Sam Pendergrast for his many years of service to the Rome Community. Write checks to Rome Rome Memorial Hospital 1500 N. James St. Rome, NY by November 16th. Today, Jeremiah promises God s chosen people that they well soon return from exile in Babylon. God renews his covenant through the prophet. As all are gathered together for their return to Jerusalem They will come with the blind and the lame in their midst. Blindness was thought to be a curse from God. Those who could not see could not work. If you could not work, you could not feed your family. Bartimaeus, our protagonist in the Gospel, had endured great poverty due to his condition. What was his life like? Could he sustain a wife and a family? Had he become a burden to his father Timaeus? Whatever the case, he cries out Son of David, have pity on me. So many people who could see Jesus did not believe he was the Son of God. Bartimaeus who has never seen anything, truly makes an act of faith in calling out to the Lord. Not only does the blind man demonstrate great faith, but also great determination, as he refuses to allow the others to prevent him from attracting Jesus attention. Notice that when Bartimaeus is healed, he does not immediately return to his village and family. Instead, his sight and followed him on the way. He became A disciple, wishing to follow Jesus, and perhaps share with others the good fortune he has received. Bartimaeus, sight restored, could stay with Jeremiah, Shout with joy for Jacob.proclaim your praise and say: The Lord has delivered his people. We pray that the Lord will deliver all of us from blindness to sight, from death to new life. Once we see the world and those around us through the new eyes of faith, then we can truly find and serve Christ in one another. I would like to THANK all the Altar-Rosary members who worked for several weeks to insure the success of the marvelous Bazaar. 5 Page Five ALTAR ROSARY SOCIETY We want to thank everyone for making the Good Buy and Bazaar a huge success. Proceeds will be gifts to our parish at Christmas time. Pope Francis Speaks to FAMILIES!! Give your children the Word of God God, like a good father and a good mother, wants to give good things to his children. And what is this nourishing food that God gives us? It is his word: his word makes us grow; it enables us to bear good fruit in life, just as the rain and snow imbue the earth, making it fruitful. (Isaiah 55:10-11). Likewise you, parents, and you too, godmothers and god fathers, grandparents, aunts and uncles, will help these children grow if you give them the word of God, the Gospel of Jesus. And give it also by your example! Every day, make it a habit to read a passage of the Gospel, a small one, and always carry a little Gospel with you in your pocket, in your purse, so you can read it. And this will set the example for your children, seeing dad, mom, their grandparents, grandpa, grandma, aunts and uncles reading the word of God. BAKED GOODS NEEDED SUNDAY, November 4th After the Veteran s Ceremony a reception is held in the Church Hall. Please consider donating homemade baked goods, cookies, etc. Please drop them off at the Church Hall in the morning at Mass time or before the ceremonies. The Altar Rosary Society will host the reception. All are welcome to attend.
