4 Page four Dear Padre, Why does the Bible have two creation stories? Scholars believe these stories (Genesis 1 3) were written by two authors during different times and situations in Jewish history. The first story focuses on the creation of the universe; the second emphasizes the creation of man and woman. The creation account that appears first in the Bible (Genesis 1:1 2:4a) was written six centuries before the birth of Christ by a priest wanting to reaffirm for the Jews that only one God is the All-powerful creator of all that exists. At that time, a belief in several powerful, warring gods was common in the cultures surrounding Judaism. The story that appears later in the Bible (Genesis 2:4b 3:24) was actually written earlier four centuries earlier by a sage in the court of King David. It affirmed that human beings have an inherent dignity and a responsibility to live within boundaries. They must obey God, a rule that applies to kings as well. Both accounts contain the closely held beliefs regarding human dignity (made in God s image and likeness) and responsibility (care for the earth as God would care for it) that are core to the Christian faith. At their heart they teach us through symbol and story about that God who is partially knowable, the source of life and hope amid the chaos and loss that beset every generation. For more information about events Call In the first reading, Isaiah uses the image of rain that waters the soil and brings about the process of growth. Saint Paul in his letter to the Romans reminds us that all of creation is moving toward the great day when the fullness of redemption will be revealed. In the Gospel, Jesus tells a powerful parable about the sower and the seed to describe the kingdom of God. We hear today that the seed, when sown and watered brings forth an abundant crop. In the same way the word of God, when sown in our hearts and nourished by the waters of baptism and the sacramental life of the Church. Brings forth the hope and glory and promise of redemption. The word of God is the source of eternal life. A word of gratitude to Deanna Martin, Jeannette Reid and Terry Denton of the Rome Sign Company for their gift to the parish. They have donated the beautiful new sign for Bingo that stands in front of St. Mary s School. The old sign needed to be replaced and the new sign you can see for blocks before you arrive at the front of the School. I am grateful to all of you! In extending a word of gratitude I am also thankful to all who have thus far contributed to this year s Hope Appeal goal. And also thank you to those who took the time to notify me that this year they were not able to give a gift to the Hope Appeal. I am asking that those who have not yet responded will do so very soon. It is my prayer that everyone who is able will make a gift so that we will reach our parish goal. The annual Hope Appeal is a necessary campaign to assist the good works of our blessed Lord within the diocese of Syracuse. Please pray about the gift you will give to this marvelous appeal that helps so many people each year. Let us also pray for one another! Peace and Joy!

Liberty St. $4.00 adults In the present Rectory on E. Liberty Street was built. More grounds were purchased for the Cemetery, and chimes and carillon were installed in the North tower of the church. He purchased the property at N. James Street which became the popular Catholic Association Building. On Jan. 23, 1921, he was elevated to the rank of Monsignor, the service being held in his own St. Peter s. He enlarged and remodeled the famed St. Aloysius Academy which years before, at the his suggestion, the parish school had been renamed in honor of Rev. Aloysius Murphy. He was always visible to the people of Rome, walking or driving his familiar horse and buggy, and seemed to know most everyone be met. On Nov, 8, 1950 the church bells tolled the sad news of his death, and once again the church and streets were filled by men of all faiths to bid him farewell. Like the two giants of the past who preceded him, he truly did grace the office of Pastor of St. Peter s Church. (To be continued)
