For more information call Celeste As we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany today, we hear the familiar story of the Magi. The Magi, who help to make known God s presence in the world in a particular way. They are the visible and tangible recipients of the mystery of which Saint Paul speaks. A mystery now revealed by the Spirit; that the Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. We are often so enamored by the familiar story of expectation, wonder, joy and faithful homage that we may forget something essential to the importance of the story; the Magi were not Jewish. They were Gentiles. They were not children of Abraham, people of the Covenant, of Israelites. They were foreigners, most likely Persian, whose religious affiliation and actual occupation have not yet been settled by biblical scholarship. Yet, they knew about Jesus. They knew about the coming of the Messiah. And they had the fearlessness to approach the Roman-appointed King of Judea that is, Herod, then the current king of the Jews, and ask him; Where is the newborn king of the Jews. We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage. Asking such a question did not deter the Magi in their quest. Their journey in faith, and their strength in following God s prompts and witnessing to his faithfulness, is a model for our own discipleship. With one exception, God is already made manifest to us we do not have to seek him out, he seeks us out as we offer our gifts to him. Gifts that will be returned to us in the gift of Christ s body and blood, making his presence just as substantially real to us as he was to the Magi. What a powerful mysterious gift that transcends time. A little smile = Emily attended Mass with her grandmother for the first time. Before the Mass, her grandmother gave her one dollar to put in the collection basket. But when the ushers passed the basket, Emily didn t give them the money. When her grandmother asked why, Emily said, My dad says you don t have to tip if you don t get good service. Remember God loves You and so do I.

5 Page Five Dear Padre, I m having an argument with a fundamentalist friend who insists the Epiphany happened exactly as it says in the Bible. I keep saying there s no way it could have. Who is right? Catholics believe that each book of the Bible needs to be appreciated according to the principles of its own literary genre. We don t look to the Gospels for modern critical history or unbiased biographical/reportorial fact-telling. The four Gospels were written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Each Gospel writer uses human skill to craft a true story, presenting the saving mystery of our Lord s life, death, and resurrection so that readers may come to know Christ, share his life, and be saved. Every story in the Gospels is shaped to communicate saving truth, but not every story is told as a direct just the facts, ma am report of sequential events. So there s saving sense in which, yes, the Epiphany happened exactly as it says in Matthew 2: And there s a more literal sense in which, no, the Epiphany probably didn t happen exactly as it s recounted. What is most certain is the Gospel s saving message of the birth of our true King, the Light of the World, before whom we offer homage and who, when we encounter him, will change our lives and send us home in a new path. Matthew Allman, CSsR New Year s Resolutions A New Year s resolution is a tradition in which a person resolves to change an undesired trait or behavior, to accomplish a personal goal or other wise improve their life. According to recent polls, the most common New Year s resolutions include: Exercise more, lose weight, eat more healthy, take a more active approach to health and improve finances. It s not a bad idea to find ways to improve our lives and it seems that when we start a new year, that s as good a time to start as any. However, making these resolutions is just the beginning. Carrying through on them is another issue. Here are a few hints that can help make them become a reality. 1. Start small, Make resolutions that you think you can keep. 2. Change one behavior at a time. It takes time to develop new habits. Allow yourself that tiem and be happy with small steps. 3. Talk about it. Share your experiences with family and friends. 4. Ask for support. Pope Francis Speaks to FAMILIES!! Take a Step Toward the Law of love Oh, how much more of the journey do we have to make in order to actually live the new law...the law of the Holy Spirit who acts in us, the law of charity, of love! Looking in newspapers or on television, we see so many years between Christians: how does this happen? Within People of God, there are so many wars of envy, of jealousy, are waged in neighborhoods, in the workplace! Even within the family itself, there are so many internal wars! We must ask the Lord to make us correctly understand this law of love. How beautiful it is to love one another as true brothers and sisters. How beautiful! Let s do something today. We may all have likes and dislikes; many of us are perhaps a little angry with someone. Then let us say to the Lord, Lord, I am angry with this or that person; I am praying to you for him or her. To pray for those with whom we are angry is a beautiful step toward that law of love. Shall we take it: Let s take it? Let s take it today.
