FAMILY PERSEPCTIVE Provided by the Hope Appeal Funds In today s gospel the Pharisee was talking about commandments (something we are forced to obey by eternal pressure) and Jesus was talking about love (an internal exhortation to give our heart, soul and mind to another). One demands allegiance, the other requires personal commitment. In our families we daily lay down our lives for each other not because we gotta but because love compels us.

4 Page four Dear Padre, How do our prayers actually help people who are deceased? I keep thinking it should be the other way around: The deceased should pray for us! After all, they have it made and we don t. From the early days of the Church, there has been a tradition of remembering those who have died. In the fourth century, Bishop Cyril of Jerusalem noted in his catechetical instructions how, in the Eucharistic prayer, we remember those who have died in two different ways. First, we remember those special ones who have fallen asleep, the fathers and mothers of our faith, the prophets, the apostles, and the martyrs. And we ask that God enable us to share in their inheritance, thanks to their prayers and intercessions for us. This is still the case. At every Mass, we remind God that we rely on Mary and the saints to intercede for us. But also at every Eucharist, since the early days of the Church, when we pray for those who have died, we are reminded that love lasts more than a lifetime. It reaches out across time and space, and even across the divide of death. When we have loved, we yearn for the beloved to live on, not just in memory but in a place that is beyond suffering and tears. And we yearn to see that loved one again. This is one of the most telling reasons why we pray for the dead. It tells us something about ourselves as men and women made in the image of God, God s children who wish what God wishes: that no one be lost, that all be redeemed. Assistance is needed for the Veteran s Day Reception After the Veteran s Day Service on Sunday, November 5th will have a reception in the Parish Hall. Baked goods are needed for the reception. Anyone willing to bake for this event is asked to bring their baked goods to the Church Hall on Sunday, November 5th starting at noon. Thanks to all our parishioners for continued support that is given to this event. Keep in mind: if a family member or friend is in the Hospital or nursing home the Sisters would be happy to visit them. Just call the rectory and leave us a message. The writer of the Book of Exodus our first reading for Mass reminds the Israelites of their duty toward the foreigner, the poor, the orphan and the widow in their midst. Saint Paul in his Letter to the Thessalonians reminds us that it is the Spirit that turns the human heart away from worldly idols to faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus summarizes the Gospel message in Matthew as love of God and love of neighbor. Our love of God is best demonstrated by our love of neighbor. Jesus underlines the close and inseparable bond between our love of God and our neighbor. Loving God is not simply a pious or cerebral act, but a lived reality, carried out in the events of our daily life. It is our witness to the love of God that will draw others into the mystery of his loving presence in the world. We are called by name to make a difference with our life in serving God every day with love and joy bringing his peace wherever we go each day. Amen!! Our parish HOPE Appeal continues as we try to reach our goal. This important annual drive helps support many of the good programs within our diocesan church. I have heard from 328 of our parishioners and many have been able to give a gift to this year s campaign. I am grateful to all who responded, but I do hope to hear from more parishioners before the campaign ends the last week of November. If you remember last year I took up a second collection to assist us in trying to reach our parish goal. I am going to do the same thing this year on November 12th.. I am grateful for any gift you will be able to give on November 12th.. Please continue to pray for all our sick who are homebound or hospitalized, I know how much they appreciate our prayers as the sick list gets longer. Remember God loves you and so do I!

5 Page 5 ALTAR ROSARY SOCIETY On October 19th we had our monthly meeting and covered dish supper. We discussed the upcoming events and made plans for the reminder of the year. Save these dates: November 2nd Mass of Remembrance at 7 pm St. Peter s Church Followed by a reception in the Church Hall November 5th Veteran Day Celebration at 3 pm St. Peter s Church. Followed by a reception in the Church Hall We ask your help with baked goods. They can be brought to the church hall anytime before either event. Thank you. November 16th : Parish wide Turkey Dinner catered by Eddie s Paramount Diner. Tickets will be sold after the Masses for $10.00 each. Raffle Tickets are available for a homemade full bed size quilt. Pope Francis Speaks to our hearts!! Trails Lead to God s Glory We must undergo many trials if we are to enter the kingdom of God. The journey of the Church and our own personal journeys as Christians are not always easy; they meet with difficulties and trials. To follow the Lord, to let his Spirit transform the shadowy parts of our lives, our ungodly ways of acting, and cleanse us of our sins, is to set out on a path with many obstacles, Both in the world around us but within us, in the heart. Do not be discouraged! We have the power of the Holy Spirit to overcome these trials. ST. PETER S CHURCH HISTORY The Marble Altars of St. Peter s Church were a gift of James A Murphy of Chicago, a former Roman, given in memory of his father and mother who are buried at St. Peter s Cemetery. One of the glories of St. Peter s are the handsome marble altars. The altar is one of the finest pieces of work in this state and it cost about $6000. a more appropriate monument to Mr. Murphy s parents could hardly have been thought of, for they were devout members of the church, and the character of the memorial is such that it makes it as enduring as the church itself. The altar is constructed of white and colored marble and onyx. It is 25feet high and 15 feet wide and weighs 20 tons.
