FAMILY PERSEPCTIVE Provided by the Hope Appeal Funds (John 6:60-69) Even though many found the teachings of Jesus difficult, He did not back down. In our families, it is important to say what is difficult to hear, to speak the truth with kindness, to correct with love and guide with understanding. RCIC (Rite of Christian Initiation for Children) Do you have an older child (ages 10-15) who has not had formal religious instruction? RCIC is open to all children between the ages of 10-15, unbaptized or baptized. These classes are designed to educate children in the Catholic faith and prepare them for the sacraments of Baptism (if necessary), Reconciliation and Eucharist. Whether your family is just entering the Church, returning to the practice of the Catholic faith, or delayed your child s sacramental preparation, all are welcome The Faith Formation Team will be hosting an Open House on Monday, September 10 th, from 6:00 pm 7:00 pm. 4 Page Four Dear Padre, How does one become a patron saint? Patron saints are nominated by various groups and reconfirmed by the Holy See. The patron saint then becomes the heavenly protector of the individuals, institutions, or specialized activities that are placed under the saint s care. Those under the saint s Patronage are encouraged to call for the saint s intercession and to follow the example of the saint s life. The choosing of patrons dates back to the early centuries of the Church, when Christians were named after the apostles and martyrs and churches were named after angels. The popularity of patron saints grew in the Middle Ages, when every circumstance of life had a heavenly protector. Examples of this are St. Michael, as the patron invoked to protect bell towers against lightning strikes, and St. Maurice, the patron of sword smiths. In the age of exploration, whole cities and even newly discovered countries were put under the protection of the saints (San Francisco is protected by St. Francis. Two Caribbean islands are named after saints, St. Lucia and St. Vincent). If you wish to see a searchable listing of all the patron saints, a good place to go is catholic.org/saints/patron.php. Drawing will be held at the Parish Picnic September 9th at 3 pm Reflections for the 21st Sunday of Ordinary Time FOCUS: God calls his chosen people to fidelity and commitment Israel s relationship with the Lord is best described as long and tortuous one full of second and third chances, of covenant and infidelity, of commitment and betrayal. Over and over again, Israel declares publicly her faith in the Lord only to see that commitment dashed in the dust of selfishness, disobedience, false regional alliances and the lure of foreign gods. But betrayal is not just found in the Old Testament. Jesus, in today s Gospel, knew from the outset how fickle and weak his disciples would be, and that at the time he would need them most, they would not be able to stay the course. We are all familiar with Judas betrayal and Peter s denial how they must have hurt Jesus as much as any nail or crown of thorns! Here in our Gospel, some of the disciples who find his teachings difficult and shocking prefer to walk away. Again the betrayal is evident!!! The great paradox of these betrayals is that although the disciples believed in Jesus and his message, that belief did not stop them from betrayal and denial. Contrast that with Jesus faithfulness; that same steadfast love and resolute fidelity that stood at the heart of the covenant couldn't be greater! Humanity s faithfulness more that matched by God s faithfulness. So we might ask ourselves if, given our human frailty, it is truly possible for us to be faithful to the Lord, or should we just throw in the towel and resign ourselves to infidelity, and even betrayals, of the One who loves us without condition and whose words are Spirit and life? In the other Scripture passages, Joshua invites Israel to choose between the ways of the world and service to the Lord. That same invitation and choice is placed before each one of us as individuals and as community of faith each day. Let us pray: Far be it from us to forsake the Lord.

At that time we will finalize our Bazaar plans and logistics for our great and exciting BAZAAR. Please consider joining us. We can use the talent and energy of so many ladies in our parish. KNITTING AND CROCHETING GROUP St. Mary s/st. Peter s Altar Rosary Society has formed a group to Knit and Crochet hats, mittens and scarves for the local school children We are looking to add knitters, crocheters, and those who want to learn how to join our group. Do you like to sew? Do you have a sewing machine just sitting idle waiting for a project??? We are also expanding our talents to have sewers join us. We have several ideas to make items on the sewing machine, that can be sold at our craft show. Dear young friends,.do not be afraid to be generous with Christ, to bear witness to his Gospel. When God sends the prophet Jerimiah, he gives him the power to pluck up and to break down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant (1:10). It is the same for you. Bringing the Gospel is bringing God s power to pluck up and break down evil and violence, to destroy and overthrow the barriers of selfness, intolerance, and hatred so as to build a new world. The pain of the victims and their families is also our pain No effort must be spared to create a culture able to prevent such situations from happening, but also to prevent the possibility of their being covered up and perpetuated. Pope Francis said in a letter addressed to the people of God. I acknowledge once more the suffering endured by many minors due to sexual abuse, the abuse of power and the abuse of conscience perpetrated by a significant number of clerics and consecrated persons, the pope wrote in letter the dated and released Aug 20th. The letter was published less than a week after allegations against former Cardinal McCarrick and the release of a Pennsylvania grand jury report on decades of clerical sexual abuse and cover ups in six dioceses. The report spoke of credible allegations against 301 priests in cases involving more than 1,000 children. So it is urgent that we once more affirm our commitment to ensure the protection of minors.
