4 Page Four Dear Padre, Just last week, my parish ran a join up campaign at all the Masses. I felt guilty because I didn t sign up for anything. Do I have an obligation to join any of the parish organizations? When you join any of your parish organizations, you will experience a network of people dedicated to building up the body of Christ through the various parish ministries. According to the Code of Canon Law, the baptized are fundamentally united in the communio fidelium, a dynamic reality requiring the active participation of all the faithful in the Church s life and mission (Canon 209). It finds visible expression through public worship and through the exercise of obligations and rights. As a parish member, you are obligated to maintain communion with the Church; to fulfill your particular duties to the universal Church and your parish church; to live a holy life and promote the growth of the Church; to work to spread the gospel; and to follow what the pastor and bishops declare as teachers of the faith and leaders of the Church (Canons ). Laypeople are called to infuse their faith in Christ through all their undertakings in the secular world and within the Church. The various organized ministries of the parish offer ways that you, as a parishioner, can fulfill some of those obligations as you are able, in the Church s life and mission inside and outside your parish. Perhaps you will rethink your decision to not sign up for anything. It s never too late to become a parish volunteer! Sundaybulletin@Liguori The United Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Requires all dioceses in the United States to undergo yearly audits to verify their compliance with the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. Since 2003, the Diocese of Syracuse has been found compliant with all audited articles with the Charter. Passing the audit for the 15th year not only reflects the quality of the Safe Environment training programs offered, but more importantly, reflects the commitment and dedication of all clergy, religious, diocesan/parish employees, and volunteers who play a significant role in maintaining safe environments for all children and youth across the diocese (400,000 to date!). In the first reading, Saul, increasing in strength and fortitude, is preaching the truth that Jesus is the Christ. Barnabas brings him to the Apostles explaining that they need not fear, Saul is indeed converted. In John s Letter, he challenges us to love in deed and truth, and reminds us that our hearts are known by the Father. In today s Gospel, Jesus teaches that he is the vine and the Father is the vine grower. We must abide in him in order to bear good fruit. Hopefully our new electronic giving program offers convenience for you and will provide a much-needed donation consistency for our parish. Giving online will be easy for those using the Internet on a regular basis. Envelopes will still be the major way to give weekly donations to the parish. We will begin the month of May during the coming week a marvelous month in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A wonderful month to pray the rosary every day. We pray the daily rosary following the 7:00 am Mass. A little smile = An elderly priest was dying, so he sent for two members of his parish: one an IRS agent, the other a lawyer. When they arrived, they were each asked by a nun to sit in a chair on either side of his bed. The priest gave a faint smile who he knew they were both there, and he settled in for what would be his last night on earth. By morning, the priest has passed on to his reward. As the two men were preparing to leave, the lawyer asked the nun why they had been called, since neither had been a close friend of the priest. Oh, I suppose it would be all right to tell you, the nun said. Father said that Jesus had died between two thieves and he wanted to do the same. An added smile = The Reverend Pastor spoke briefly, much to the delight of the congregation. Let us pray for one another! Help - - Help - - Help We need Bingo helpers!!! Please call the Rectory

Call for more info Prayer for the Family O God, who was pleased to give us the shining example of the Holy Family, graciously grant that we may imitate them in practicing the virtues of family life. Transform our doubt to faith; Strengthen our hope; Help us to live in charity until we are all one in your kingdom. Through Jesus Christ, your Son, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever. Amen Pope Francis Speaks to Families!! Children Are a Sign Today...children are a sign. They are a sign of hope, a sign of life, but also a Diagnostic sign, a marker indicating the health of families, society, and the entire world. Whenever children are accepted, loved, cared for, and protected, the family is healthy, society is more healthy, and the world is more human. ENRICHING THE CHURCH Pastoral Letter on the Role of the Family in the life of the Church of Syracuse and Beyond (Continued) This is what parents and godparents have promised at Baptism: to make it their constant care to bring their children up in the practice of the faith; to bring them up to keep God s Commandments as Christ taught us, by loving God and our neighbor. This is not an easy task. Parents, like the apostles, face many challenges when it comes to handing on our Catholic Faith to their children and grandchildren, as I noted at the beginning of this letter. Nevertheless, at the end of the celebration of a child s Baptism, the final blessing prays that mothers and fathers will not only be the first teachers of their children in the ways of faith, but also :the best of teachers, bearing witness to the faith by what they say and do. (to be continued) Catholic Home Missions Support the Catholic Home Missions Appeal! Right now, over 40 percent of dioceses in the US are considered home mission territory because they are unable to fund the essential pastoral work needed in their communities. Your support funds programs, such as religious education, seminary formation, and lay ministry training, to build vibrant faith communities right here in the US. For more info.
