It s a wonderful opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation before Christmas.

4 Page Four Dear Padre, What do we really know about John the Baptist and how do we know it? What we know about John the Baptist comes from a combination of Scripture and Church traditions that evolved during and after the writing of the Scriptures of the New Testament. John s parents were Zechariah, a priest in the Jerusalem Temple, and Elizabeth, who was related to Mary. The angel Gabriel told Zechariah that his wife would bear a son, even though she was quite old. It is believed that John was born in the region of Ain Karim, southwest of Jerusalem. During his early twenties, he was a member of the Qumran community, and later was a desert hermit. In his late twenties John began his public ministry in the Jordan River Valley. He followed a long line of Jewish prophets who preached against evils of the day, demanding inner repentance and outer baptism as a sign of that repentance. John continued to preach in the Jordan Valley even after encountering Jesus. Eventually John was arrested by Herod Antipas and imprisoned at Machaerus Fortress by the Dead Sea. He was beheaded at the request of Salome, daughter of Herodias. After John s death, many of his disciples followed Jesus, including Andrew and John. John, whose name means God is gracious, is usually represented in pictures holding a long slender cross with a small lamb partially hidden behind him. He is the patron of monastic life, people with epilepsy and other compulsive disorders, lambs, printers, blacksmiths, and tailors. Fr. Paul J. This third Sunday of Advent is traditionally called Gaudete Sunday a rejoicing reflected in rose vestments and the choice of Scriptures. We are more than halfway through our season of vigilant preparation and persevering prayer, as we ready ourselves to both celebrate the coming of Christ in history and look forward to his return in glory. For Christians, this theme of rejoicing lies at the heart of our faith. Even if we are struggling with life s great issues, we are still called to be people of joy and to be ready to share that joy with others. So what does this spiritual or holy joy look like? Clearly, it is not the same as pleasure or human satisfaction these are emotions that are short-lived and derived from the external, they are what we perceive and experience. Spiritual joy arises from our interior life our relationship with the divine. Like a well bubbling up from the depths of the earth, spiritual joy wells up even in the midst of life s struggles and becomes the hallmark of the true Christian. Zephaniah is exultant in his description of God s faithfulness and promise. Saint Paul, too, wants his community in Philippi to be joyful, not with a superficial rejoicing but with a joy that flows from the Lord as they await his imminent return in glory. To maintain this joy, Paul reminds them to stay prayerful at all times. And what must we do? How can we bring about change in our world? As spouses and family members, we can strive to love with a God-like love. As parents and guardians, we can teach our children that their true value lies not in material things or the latest gadget or brand, but in how they treat others and serve the less fortunate. As civic-minded people by using our freedom to serve our community. As employers and employees, by paying a just wage and working hard. And as Christians, by being faithful to the Gospel and rejoicing in God s presence and promise! The list is endless and it is only when we are faithful to Christ that we will know real joy and understand the challenging hope of Advent. Let us take advantage of the grace of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession) on Monday from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm.. We will offer the Sacrament again on Thursday, December 20 th from 11:30 am to 12:00 noon and 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm and also on Saturday, December 22 nd from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm.. A word of PRAISE and THANKS to Mrs. Colleen O Neil her Staff and all the youngsters from the Faith Formation classes for an outstanding presentation of the Nativity Story. 5 Page Five ALTAR ROSARY SOCIETY We had wonderful time at our Annual Parish Christmas Party at the Franklyn Hotel. From Mary Wahl, our President and all the officers Of the organization, we wish all a Blessed Merry Christmas filled with Love, Peace and Happiness. The coming of the Christ Child as our Savior each year strengthens our Faith and Commitment as Christians and helps us to spread the Word to all we meet. We also renew our commitment to be members of the Altar Rosary Society who work so tirelessly to support the Parish with its fundraisers and many activities. Thanks to all and God bless you. The Freedom to say yes A good mother...helps her children to make definitive decisions with freedom. This is not easy, but a mother knows how to do it. But what does freedom mean? It is certainly not doing whatever you want, allowing yourself to be dominated by passions, to pass from one experience to another without discernment, to follow the fashions of the day; freedom does not mean, so to speak, throwing everything that you don t like out the window. No, that is not freedom! Freedom is given to us so that we know how to make good decisions in life! Mary as a good mother teaches us to be like her, capable of making definitive decisions; definitive choices, at the moment in a time controlled by, so to speak, a philosophy of the provisional. It is very difficult to make a lifetime commitment. And she helps us to make those definitive decisions in the full freedom with which she said yes to the plan God has for her life.. Chris Atavilla, LYC, US, chats with our own Msgr. Kennedy at the Greater Rome-Utica chapter Military Officers Association Annual Dinner on December 2nd. Msgr. served tours in Vietnam with the 173rd Airborne Brigade and the 1st Air Cavalry Division as an Army Chaplain and has over 200 parachute jumps. He was a guest at the dinner.
