4 Page Four Dear Padre, I enjoy going to the casino to gamble, but I have seen people gamble and lose all of their money. Is gambling considered a sin? To play games of chance, to bet on horse or dog races, or to buy lottery tickets are, in and of themselves, innocent undertakings that can be sources of fun and even financial returns. But circumstances can change an innocent game into something morally suspect, even downright wrong. When a person gets so involved with gambling that it becomes addictive, when the welfare of the gambler and the gambler s family is jeopardized, gambling ceases to be a harmless amusement. Instead, it becomes an irresponsible practice indeed, objectively, a sin. The sin lies in the neglect of one s responsibilities to self, family, and God. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says this about gambling: Games of chance or wagers are not in themselves contrary to justice. They become Morally unacceptable when they deprive someone of what is necessary to provide for their needs or those of others. The passion for gambling risks becoming an enslavement (CCC 2413). A survey of a local group of Gamblers Anonymous highlights the potential destructive nature of this activity. Within this group, the gambling addiction has led 22 percent to divorce, 40 percent to lose their jobs, 49 percent to steal money with which to pay their gambling debts, and 63 percent to contemplate suicide. In that vein, let us pay attention to the lessons we are taught in today s readings. Jesus tries to teach the Pharisees and the Scribes the importance of what we have tin our hearts. He calls them hypocrites for concentrating on unclean hands instead of unclean hearts. Let us take this lesson to heart! Jesus has some harsh words today for those who show themselves to be hypocrites. The first two readings prepare us for this lesson by explaining how our behavior shows others nations your wisdom. James exhorts his readers to put their beliefs into action. As we listen to the readings today, let us reflect on how we reveal ourselves in what we do. We learn more about another person by watching what they do than by listening to what they say. So James is clear in saying that it is nor enough to listen to God s word, one must put it into action. Be doers of the word and not hearers only, He admonishes, Specifically, he encourages the early Christians to care for the most vulnerable among them. This is what he refers to as living our their faith, pure and undefiled (James1) Putting faith into action is essential. Jesus sees through the Pharisees and the scribes at once, calling them out as hypocrites because they follow the letter of the law and not the spirit. Moses tells the people that other nations will envy them for observing the commandments because they will conclude that no other nation has gods so close to it as the Lord, our God, is go us whenever we call (Deuy. 4:7) How fortunate we are, then, that we have a God who is incarnate in the world and that we can receive in the Eucharist. 5 Page Five ALTAR ROSARY SOCIETY We will resume our monthly meetings beginning September 6 pm in St. Peter s parish hall. At that time we will finalize our Bazaar plans and logistics for our great and exciting BAZAAR. October 20th and 21st To date, we are receiving several donations for the sale. We thank you for you contributions. Keep them coming. KNITTING AND CROCHETING GROUP St. Mary s/st. Peter s Altar Rosary Society has formed a group to Knit and Crochet Our next get together will be Wednesday, September 12th at 6 pm. We will have coffee and cold drinks as well as wine and desserts. We are looking to add knitters, crocheters, and those who want to learn how to join our group. Do you like to sew? Do you have a sewing machine just sitting idle waiting for a project??? We are also expanding our talents to have sewers join us. And how does he walk? What does he do when he walks beside us in life? This is hard. Anyone who knows this wins the Derby! What does Jesus do when he walks this with us?...first he helps us, He leads us! Very good. He walks with us, he helps us, he leads us and he teaches us to journey on. Jesus gives us the strength to work. Doesn t he? And also in our school tasks! He supports us, he helps us, he leads us, he sustains us. Jesus always goes with us. Good.
