4 Page Four ALTAR ROSARY SOCIETY COMING SOON Our Annual St. Patrick s Dinner At St. Peters Church catered by Eddie s Paramount Diner. March 21st Tickets ($20) will be available the weekends of March 8 and 9th and March 15-16th. Please make plans to attend this Parish event. Our regular monthly meetings will resume in April. We are actively looking for women of our parish to join our organization. We continually strive to serve our clergy, parish & parishioners. We organize fund-raising activities, parish wide dinners, we have an exceptional crocheting/knitting group, we schedule altar cleaning throughout the year & we enjoy each other s company throughout all our events. As Christians, we worship a God who loves us so much that he became human for our sake and went the extra mile of love, dying an excruciating and humiliating death on a cross. Saint Paul reassures us in the second reading that, as we are human and in the likeness of Adam-- complete with sin--so we will also take on the likeness of Jesus, the heavenly one. That s a reassuring thought when we read the Gospel, in which Jesus describes what he expects from those who follow him. We are called to see with God s eyes -- to see our enemies as brothers or sisters and to love them. We are to return good to those who mistreat us. Because we are human, we might not live out these expectations consistently, but if we stay close to Jesus in prayer, we can trust that he is transforming us, step by step, into his image. As Lent approaches, may we take advantage of this special season to spend more time with Jesus and more time serving others, allowing him to transform us. Celebrating the Rite of Sending / The Rite of Election = Sunday Morning, March 10th at 10:30 a.m. Mass, we will celebrate the Rite of Sending forth our Catechumen MELANIE ROSE. The Church has discerned her readiness for reception of this initiation of the Sacraments this Easter. After these Rites are celebrated here, our Catechumen along with her Sponsor will be sent by our parish to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Syracuse for the Rite of Election with Bishop Robert Cunningham at 2:30 p.m.. PLEASE keep her in your PRAYERS. A little smile = A Sister teaching the Bible asked her class why Mary and Joseph took Jesus with them to Jerusalem. A little second grader replied, They couldn t get a baby sitter. A Pastor was asked by a politician, Name one thing the government can do to help the Church. 5 Page Five Dear Padre, At Mass, the priest lifts the chalice and says the blood of Christ will be poured out for you and for many. For decades, the wording was all not many. Why the change? A 2001 Vatican document, On the Use of Vernacular Languages in the Publication of the Books of the Roman Liturgy (Liturgiam Authenticam), called for a strict alignment between liturgical texts and the original Latin. Consequently, the current English translation of The Roman Missal (third edition) includes a more literal translation of Et cum spiritu tuo as And with your spirit rather than the loose translation And also with you. Likewise, the change from all to many in the words of consecration has to do with the Latin text pro multis, for which the exact translation is for many. Moreover, for many also aligns with the words of Jesus at the Last Supper in the Gospels of Mark (14:24) and Matthew (26:28). And Scripture scholar Daniel Harrington, SJ, cites the Suffering Servant who bore the sins of many in Isaiah 53:12 as the basis for the passages in Mark and Matthew. Others, however, question if the exact translation for many misrepresents Christ s universal offer of salvation by his death on the cross. To be clear, Jesus died to offer salvation to everyone, even though it s possible that some won t accept his offer. As the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments says: For many is a faithful translation of pro multis, whereas for all is rather an explanation of the sort that belongs properly to catechesis. Rules for the Journey: Thank You It seems so easy to say these words, but we know that it is not. But it is important! We teach it to children, but then we ourselves forget it! Gratitude is an important sentiment!...an old woman once said to me in Buernos Aires, Gratitude is a flower that grows on a noble ground. Nobility of soul is necessary so that this flower might grow. Do you remember the Gospel of Luke? Jesus heals ten lepers and then only one returns to say thank you to Jesus. The Lord says, And the other nine, where are they? This also holds true for us: do we know how to give thanks? In your relationship, and tomorrow in married life, it is important to keep alive the awareness that the other person is a gift from God.and for the gifts of God we say thank you, we must always give thanks for them. In this interior attitude one says Thank you to the other for everything. It is not a kind word to use with strangers, to show you are polite. You need to know how to say thank you in order to go forward in a good way together in married life. THE POWER OF PRAYER The day was long, The burden I had borne Seemed heavier than I could longer bear And then it lifted-but I did not know Some one had knelt in prayer; Had taken me to God that very hour, And asked the easing of the load, and He, In infinite compassion, had stooped down And taken it from me. We cannot tell how often as we pray For some bewildered one, Hurt and distressed, The answer comes, But many times those hearts Find sudden peace and rest. Some one had prayed, and Faith, a reaching hand, Took hold of God, and brought Him down that day! So many, many hearts have need of prayer. Oh, let us pray!
