These things happen in families. Children feel insulted when they are constantly criticized. Spouses hunger for affection. Grandparents feel excluded by divorce and custody decisions. Parents weep because they feel alienated from their children.

4 Page Four Dear Padre, Why does the Church rightfully celebrate marriage, family, and religious life but neglect the equally important celibate single life? Perhaps if this vocation got the respect and attention it deserves, we d have fewer people rushing into bad relationships and weak marriages. Our vocation in life is a gift from God tobecome a living response to God s love. God invites people to holiness and service through marriage, the single life, the priesthood, the diaconate or the religious life. Lest the single life be overlooked, the Catechism of the Catholic Church states, We must also remember the great numberof single persons who are especially close to Jesus heart and therefore deserve the special affection and active solicitude of the Church, especially of pastors (CCC 1658). It adds that the doors of homes and of the great family which is the Church must be open to all of them. Like the gift of one s vocation, celibacy also is a gift from God that s offered backto the Church. Jesus himself chose celibacy, not because he disapproved of marriage or family life, but for the sake of the kingdom. He was wedded to his mission in bringing about a universal family that follows God s will. To be celibate, then whether as a single person or in consecrated life isn t upheld in and of itself, but for the reign of God. Whatever the vocation and however it s lived out, all cooperate in the building up of the Body of Christ in a spirit of equality and dignity according to each one s own condition and function (Canon 208). A Duet Dance Competition and Fundraiser Call for more info and to register call The Good News Center is hosting a brand new dance competition called Shall We Dance? As a replacement for Dance the Night Away this event is an actual dance competition. There is a $250 grand prize of each of the two age categories, years and 20 and up Duets only are able to register. Competitors are asked to submit a video of one minute in length by February 14th. Dance instructors will select the best in the two age categories and those will compete on stage at the new Msgr. Willenburg Center at Notre Dame High School on March 30th. To enter, submit the video on a flash drive along with a nonrefundable $25 entry fee. Competitors will be announced on March 1st. Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose hope is in the Lord. Don t we all sometimes wonder when we see someone behave in a certain way. What, don t they know that s not right? Or. Why didn t they know better? We witness so many actions and decisions that are quite contrary to what we expect of people, or that go against what we know to be right and wrong. The catechism tells us, Every institution is inspired, at least implicitly, by a vision of man and his destiny, from which it derives the point of reference for its judgment, its hierarchy of values, its line of conduct (2244). There are rules for living properly in the world. We have federal laws and state regulations. But these are external rules. These rules do not form us. They can show some things, but it is from God that we properly learn how to act in the world. God s instructions show us how we can be our best selves. How does God guide us? The great place to start would be as we listen to the words of Jesus from the Gospel reading from Luke for today s Mass. The beatitudes are the heart of Jesus preaching. They tell us to love our enemies and love our neighbor. At the core of the sermon is Jesus teaching on love. This love is characterized by forgiveness and generosity. These are characteristic of the Christian life. They offer us hope in the midst of trials and tests. Today and every day let us follow the path of blessing and human flourishing Jesus has chartered for us in the beatitudes.
