4 Page Four RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS Becoming Catholic as an adult requires individuals to participate in a time of formation known as RCIA. The word initiate means to induct into membership. In the context of Christian initiation, it means process that prepares you to become a member of the Catholic Church. People who have been thinking of becoming catholic, who are attached to its beliefs and who seek deeper meaning in their lives may wish to follow these promptings and discover what lies behind them. To help you understand the basic way of Catholic life, we first offer the inquiry period. These sessions do not bind or commit you to membership in the Catholic Faith. This is the preparation stage and will vary time-wise depending on the participant and on God s call in his or her life. The next phase, which is called the catechumenate, is usually about one year long. During this phase we meet on Sunday mornings. This is given to fostering a deeper relationship with the Lord. Our sessions reflect on scripture, church teachings, and a variety of related topics all in preparation for the reception of the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist normally at Easter of that year. Please call the rectory or Kathy Chase at Dear Padre, I enjoy going to the casino to gamble, but I have seen people gamble and lose all of their money. Is gambling considered a sin? To play games of chance, to bet on horse or dog races, or to buy lottery tickets are, in and of themselves, innocent undertakings that can be sources of fun and even financial returns. But circumstances can change an innocent game into something morally suspect, even downright wrong. When a person gets so involved with gambling that it becomes addictive, when the welfare of the gambler and the gambler s family is jeopardized, gambling ceases to be a harmless amusement. Instead, it becomes an irresponsible practice indeed, objectively, a sin. The sin lies in the neglect of one s responsibilities to self, family, and God. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says this about gambling: Games of chance or wagers are not in themselves contrary to justice. They become morally unacceptable when they deprive someone of what is necessary to provide for their needs or those of others. The passion for gambling risks becoming an enslavement (CCC 2413). Reflections for September 23, 2018 FOCUS: Sin kills and destroys: but the Lord upholds my life. Anyone who has ever tried to clean up glitter after any kind of crafting event especially one that also involved glue, and included the participation of small children probably understands an underlying thread of today s readings better than most. Like sin, glitter spills out in a dizzying array of temptation, is nearly impossible to fully clean up, and manages to find its way into every possible nook and cranny of our live. We find ourselves asking the rhetorical question, how in the world did glitter end up there? as we spot it on clothing or furniture far away from the original source. We know it ended up there because that s what glitter does; it goes everywhere, and touches everything. And it seems as if it would take God s direct intervention to fully rid ourselves of the mess and disorder of it consequences and never ending effects. Our question is not unlike the ones James is asking today, where do the wars and where do the conflicts among you come from? He knows the answer, of course: Is it not from your passions that make war within your members? James is talking about sin the dis-ordering of our desires and actions, and the consequences and effects of original sin. It goes everywhere, and touches everything. The entire passage from James is commentary on sin, and includes a reminder that the solution is the one prophesied in Wisdom, and fulfilled in Christ; the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceable, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without inconstancy or insincerity Jesus Christ, who saves us from sin because we cannot save ourselves, Jesus Christ, who tells his disciples, who do nor understand, that he will be handed over to men and they will kill him, and three days after his death he will rise, Jesus Christ, who instructs us to order our desires and actions in service to one another. Jesus Christ, fully divine and fully human sin all things but sin, who yet can understand our struggles with sin. Exactly the direct intervention by God that we needed.. FAMILY PERSEPCTIVE Reflection for Sept. 23rd Provided by the Hope Appeal fund Disagreements are common in families. However, what would you say if Jesus posed the same question What are you arguing about? Is it silly and petty? Is it an attempt to impose your will and control on another. Today Jesus tells us and his disciples to give it up. We are meant to serve each other, not control.

We will not accepting any items after September 30th unless you have previous arrangements to drop them off. Our first meeting for this year was very successful, We discussed plans for the Bazaar Day and also welcomed new members. Our shared supper was delicious. KNITTING AND CROCHETING GROUP Our group is doing so very well. They have collectively made: 25 individual hats, 353 mitten/hat sets, 11 pair of individual mitens, 1 pair of slippers and 2 scarfs. Thanks we will be able to keep more kids warm this winter. We will just keep knitting and crocheting. We thank all who have generously donated yarn for our project.
