In the Fall we toured the City Hall renovations. Matthew Varughese, the architect has invited us to tour the progress being made at the former City Hall. We may go in May. Be firm, steadfast, always fully devoted to the lord. As church, we have honored the countless learned and holy men and women -- teachers of all generations and cultures who have dedicated their lives to the advancement not only of holy wisdom but of earthly knowledge. From the writer of Sirach in our first reading to Saint Paul the great evangelist and preacher, to modern theologians and catechists, they have shared their knowledge and wisdom and laid before us their insights and learning. there are even those among us who may have less formal scholarship and education, but lead lives and speak truths that advance the gospel. they are all teachers of the faith who have helped us to mine and understand the mysteries of this world and the world to come. They have helped us to understand how god is present in our world, and in those great moments of life and death. The blind cannot lead the blind. Good produces good, and evil produces evil. As we heard in the first reading, so too does one s speech disclose the bent of one s mind. So, let us always, as Saint Paul says, be firm, steadfast, always fully devoted to the work of the Lord. For the ways of the Lord are always and only good, and thus so shall be what we teach, preach and live as a result. Let us nourish our hearts and bodies with the perfect gift from god in the body and blood of Jesus Christ. May it give us the grace to be firm and steadfast as Paul encourages, and to bear good fruit for the world. The Lenten season will soon be here and it our special time to grow spiritually closer to our blessed Lord. Hopefully we will be spending more time in daily prayer. Hearn FAMILY PERSEPCTIVE Provided by the Hope Appeal funds Today Jesus tells us: Why do you seek the speck in someone else s eye but miss the log in you own eye? It s always easier to try to change someone else than the things in ourselves which need change. What a waste of time; for we can t change anyone but ourselves.

5 Page Five Dear Padre, I m having an argument with a fundamentalist friend who insists the Epiphany happened exactly as it says in the Bible. I keep saying there s no way it could have. Who is right? Catholics believe that each book of the Bible needs to be appreciated according to the principles of its own literary genre. We don t look to the Gospels for modern critical history or unbiased biographical/reportorial fact-telling. The four Gospels were written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Each Gospel writer uses human skill to craft a true story, presenting the saving mystery of our Lord s life, death, and resurrection so that readers may come to know Christ, share his life, and be saved. Every story in the Gospels is shaped to communicate saving truth, but not every story is told as a direct just the facts, ma am report of sequential events. So there s saving sense in which, yes, the Epiphany happened exactly as it says in Matthew 2: And there s a more literal sense in which, no, the Epiphany probably didn t happen exactly as it s recounted. What is most certain is the Gospel s saving message of the birth of our true King, the Light of the World, before whom we offer homage and who, when we encounter him, will change our lives and send us home in a new path. Catherine de Hueck Doherty, ( ) Foundress of Madonna House If anyone in our modern age can show us how to apply the Gospel to daily life, it is Catherine Doherty. By her personal example and her work with the poor, by her lectures and writings, and through the community that she founded: the Madonna House Apostolate of which Father Karlen is an associate priest. For you First Friday conferences, Catherine tells us that the task of every Christian is to incarnate the Gospel, to put human flesh on it. each day, what ever our situations may be. Offering is $25 with lunch. Pope Francis Speaks to FAMILIES!! Take a Step Toward the Law of love Oh, how much more of the journey do we have to make in order to actually live the new law...the law of the Holy Spirit who acts in us, the law of charity, of love! Looking in newspapers or on television, we see so many years between Christians: how does this happen? Within People of God, there are so many wars of envy, of jealousy, are waged in neighborhoods, in the workplace! Even within the family itself, there are so many internal wars! We must ask the Lord to make us correctly understand this law of love. How beautiful it is to love one another as true brothers and sisters. How beautiful! Let s do something today. We may all have likes and dislikes; many of us are perhaps a little angry with someone. Then let us say to the Lord, Lord, I am angry with this or that person; I am praying to you for him or her. To pray for those with whom we are angry is a beautiful step toward that law of love. Shall we take it: Let s take it? Let s take it today. A Lenten Climate Change Challenge for Students and Families Lent is traditionally a time for resolutions and sacrifice. It can also be used to make thoughtful lifestyle changes that can improve the health of our planet, as well as, our own spiritual and physical well being. As Pope Francis has indicated, young people can and should be our leaders in climate change awareness. We are listing potential Lenten resolutions, involving some modest sacrifices, that would contribute to a healthier environment for us all Shorter showers to reduce water usage. Avoid using Plastic bags, container, straws. Instead reuse containers like refillable water bottles. Cut back on TV and computer time (and unplug then when not in use) to reduce energy usage. Wear warmer clothes indoors and turn down the heat to reduce energy usuage. Eat less red meat (no beef in Lent except on Sundays?) To help reduce methane emission from livestock. Shovel snow for your family (instead of using a snow blower). Power trimmers, mowers and blowers are a major source of pollutants and greenhouse gases.

Call for more info and to register call Shall We Dance? A Duet Dance Competition and Fundraiser The Good News Center is hosting a brand new dance competition called Shall We Dance? As a replacement for Dance the Night Away this event is an actual dance competition. There is a $250 grand prize of each of the two age categories, years and 20 and up Duets only are able to register. Competitors are asked to submit a video of one minute in length by February 14th. Dance instructors will select the best in the two age categories and those will compete on stage at the new Msgr. Willenburg Center at Notre Dame High School on March 30th. To enter, submit the video on a flash drive along with a nonrefundable $25 entry fee. Competitors will be announced on March 1st.
