4 Page Four ALTAR ROSARY SOCIETY The Altar Rosary Society ended the year with our Annual Christmas Party. We do not hold meetings during the months of January and February, however, we will have informal gatherings to lay the ground work for some upcoming projects Stay tuned!!! Once again, we wish all of you a Blessed Christmas and a wonderful New Year. We are extremely grateful for your generous support during the year. THE LEGEND OF THE POINSETTA The legend of the poinsettia comes from Mexico. It tells of a girl named Maria and her little brother Pablo. They were very poor but always looked forward to the Christmas festival. Each year a large manger scene was set up in the village church, and the days before Christmas were filled with parades and parties. The two children loved Christmas, but were always saddened because they had no money to buy presents. They especially wished that they could give something to the church for the Baby Jesus. But they had nothing. One Christmas Eve, Maria and Pablo set out for church to attend the service. On their way they picked some weeds growing along the roadside and decided to take them as their gift to the Baby Jesus in the manger scene. Of course they were teased by other children when they arrived with their gift, but they said nothing for they knew they had given what they could. Maria and Pablo began placing green plants around the manger and miraculously, the green top leaves turned into bright red petals, and soon the manger was surrounded by beautiful star-like flowers and so we see them today. Today, as we begin this very short fourth week of Advent, the readings give us much to reflect on about Jesus God s gift to all of us. Micah tells the Israelites that from Bethlehem shall come a ruler, Whose origin is from of old, and He will stand firm and shepherd his flock, God people. The letter to the Hebrews reminds us that Jesus did not come to offer God Holocausts and Sin Offerings, but obedience to His Father s will. Finally, Elizabeth, formerly barren, is with child and she greets as Lord the unborn child that her young kinswoman is carrying. Jesus far exceeds our imagination in both His power and His humility. We are assured throughout the readings about the greatness of Jesus: He is to be the ruler of Israel for all time, with greatness and majesty. Elizabeth recognizes Him for who He is: the Son of God, the blessed fruit of Mary s womb. As we learn in the letter to the Hebrews. Through Jesus offering of Himself and His complete obedience to God s will, He consecrated a people for God, Once for all. As people consecrated to God through Jesus, we can continue in our lives the work our Savior began when he was born in a manger. The readings remind us that God was able to work through a very small town, a humble young virgin, an older woman who was presumed to be sterile, a tiny baby. This great God - who created a vast universe virtually out of nothing - can also do much in our lives, through our limited resources, time and talents. So, as we celebrate in three days the gift that God gave us through the incarnation of His Son, let us also pray that we can be gifts to one another and to those whom God has sent us to serve. Let us pray for obedient hearts, that we might always strive to know God s will in our lives and to follow that will. Let us pray that, like Elizabeth, we might be enlightened by the Holy Spirit to see God s work in unexpected places and people. Let us also pray in this special season that through us, Jesus might be the shepherd of the troubled souls whom we might encounter in our daily lives. May we at all times, throughout our lives, allow Jesus to do the will of God through us, in whatever big or small way he chooses. Thank you to all who are practicing as members of the Christmas Choir. I am grateful also to those who have signed up as Altar Servers, Eucharistic Ministers and Lectors at the Christmas Masses, but we still need a few more volunteers. Please continue to pray for all of our sick, who are hospitalized or homebound. I know how grateful they are for prayers.

5 Page Five Dear Padre, Our parish is big into nighttime services. We have the Advent vespers and, of course, Midnight Mass. Is there a reason for doing these services at night? Both Advent vespers and Midnight Mass center on our expectation of Jesus coming into our midst as the Light of the World. The vespers prayer is usually celebrated at dusk, as day is turning into night. The service proclaims that the darkness of night will not conquer the Light of Jesus. Christian tradition holds that the ecclesiastical day begins at sunset, in accord with Genesis 1:5: Evening came, and morning followed the first day. Vespers, or the Office of Evening, It is the first hour of the new Church day. Both the vespers and the Mass at midnight call us to embrace a new beginning, which is Jesus the Light. This imagery is especially appropriate considering the arrival of the winter solstice. In the beginning of Advent, the nights grow progressively solstice marks the light s reclaiming of the world. In the early centuries of Christianity, people from the countryside would gather on Christmas Eve in the warmth of the great monastery church. They would go to confession, be forgiven, sing of the newborn Savior, and participate in the Eucharist After Eucharist, they would join in a great feast that lasted until sunrise. When you celebrate at Midnight Mass this year, recall that you are proclaiming that Jesus the Light has conquered the darkness again this year and forever. Fr. Paul J. Coury, CSsR FAMILY PERSEPCTIVE For the Fourth Sunday of Advent Provided by the Hope Appeal Funds Mary was excited about her first pregnancy and rushed to tell her cousin. Sadly children are often seen as a liability, another mouth to feed or an obstacle to my career. It is said Christmas is for children. It is more accurate to say Christmas is for adults to appreciate the gift of children! Pope Francis Speaks to FAMILIES!! Jesus Gives Us Strength This is the Christian life: talking to the Father, talking to the Son, and talking to the Hoy Spirit. Jesus has saved us, but he also walks beside us in life. Is this true? And how does he walk? What does he do when he walks beside us in life? This is hard. Anyone who knows this wins the Derby! What does Jesus do when he walks with us? First he helps us. He leads us! Very good. He walks with us, he helps us, he lead us, and he teaches us to journey on. And Jesus also gives us the strength to work. Doesn t he? He sustains us! Good! In difficulty, doesn t he? and also in our school tasks! He supports us, he helps us, he leads, he sustains us. That s it. Jesus always goes with us. Good. Butlisten, Jesus gives us strength!...in Communion he gives us strength, he really helps us with strength. He comes to us. But when you say, He gives us strength! He comes to us. But you say, He gives us Communion, does a piece of bread make you so strong? Isn t it bread? Is it bread? This is bread, but is what is on the altar bread? Or isn t it bread? It seems to be bread. It is not really bread. What is it? It is the Body of Jesus. Jesus comes into our hearts.
