FAMILY PERSEPCTIVE Provided by the Hope Appeal Funds Mary and Joseph must have been proud when their village all spoke well of Jesus and were amazed at his words. But they probably felt shame when the same people drove him out of town. Like Mary and Joseph, the highs and lows of parenting are our path to being a Holy Family

Perhaps prophecy is one of the most difficult gifts to receive from God, because as we can see from the readings, good prophets are not always welcome, either in their native place, as Jesus discovered, or in places that receive difficult or challenging messages from God. But while prophets might not receive accolades from the people to whom they are sent, they do receive the assurance that God is with them to give them the strength and courage they need in their mission. Saint Paul today gives us some insight into our call to evangelize the world. We are called to use our gifts and opportunities God gives us in love -- for God and the good of others, and for the salvation of the world. The kind of love that Paul calls us to is challenging, it is not meant simply to enrich us, make us feel good or inflate our egos. It is meant to benefit the other, to focus on what s best for the other person. As we go about the rest of our week, let us ask God for the special spiritual gift of love to accompany everything we do. Congratulations to Sister Kathleen Eiffe, CSJ, Mayor Jacqueline Izzo, William Fleet and Mark Lagasse and Father Edmund Morelle and Joseph Simons honored posthumously as members of the Rome Catholic Schools Hall of Fame. They are marvelous choices of the Committee and very deserving of the honor. A little smile = A boy ask his father to use the car and the replies No not until you get your hair cut! The boy replies, But father...jesus had long hair! Yes, but Jesus walked everywhere, said the father. Protons have mass said one student and a classmate said I didn t know they were Catholic! 5 a Page Five Dear Padre, My son and his wife attend a Christian church because they like the minister and the upbeat service. My son was raised Catholic and still claims he is Catholic, even though he doesn t go to a Catholic church. I feel frustrated by the whole affair! Your frustration is certainly shared by many parents and grandparents today. They raised their children Catholic, even sent them to Catholic schools, but their adult children are less disciplined about their faith practices. Recent surveys on religion showed that 80 percent of Americans say they believe in God, and 75 percent consider spirituality important in their lives. But this doesn t mean they commit to religious practices. About 60 percent of Catholics questioned attend religious services only once or twice a month, or never. Many are interested in exploring different teachings and attending different churches. The loyalty to the Church and its disciplines that was evident in our own lives, or in our parents and grandparents lives, is often lacking in today s under-fifty-five crowd. What can one do about this? The traditional method is to pray for your children while continuing to set an example through your own loyalty to the Catholic Church including attendance at Sunday Mass and observance of other Church disciplines. It would be good to invite your son and his wife to attend church with you when they are visiting. As we age, we often become more religious and traditional. We may become more interested in our family s history, photos, and traditions. The religion of our childhood may begin to appear very attractive again. Be patient and continue to pray that your children will return to the Church of their roots. Sundaybulletin@Liguori.org Pope Francis Speaks to FAMILIES!! There will be crosses!!! It is normal for husband and wife to argue -it s normal. It always happens. But my advice is this: never let the day end without having first made peace. Never! A small gesture is sufficient. Thus the journey may continue. Marriage is a symbol of life, real life -it is not fiction! It is the sacrament of the love of Christ and the Church, a love which finds its proff nad guarantee in the cross. My desire for you is that you have a good journey, a fruitful one, growing in love. I wish you happiness. There will be crossed! But the Lord is always there to help us move forward. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Valentine s Day party Thursday, February 14th 4 to 6pm 112 Ridge Street. Call for more info and to register call The Good News Center is hosting a brand new dance competition called Shall We Dance? A Duet Dance Competition and Fundraiser March 30th. Msgr. Willenburg Center As a replacement for Dance the Night Away this event is an actual dance competition. There is a $250 grand prize of each of the two age categories, years and 20 and up Duets only are able to register. Competitors are asked to submit a video of one minute in length by February 14th. Dance instructors will select the best in the two age categories and those will compete on stage at the new Msgr. Willenburg Center at Notre Dame High School on March 30th. To enter, submit the video on a flash drive along with a nonrefundable $25 entry fee. Competitors will be announced on March 1st. SO..shall we dance?
