4 Page four Dear Padre, Why do we offer Mass for a specific intention? Aren t Masses offered for the intentions of all present? The Eucharist makes present, in this moment, the memorial sacrifice of Christ; the source of the Church s life and the focus of the Church s prayer (see the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy [Sacrosanctum Concilium], 10). Mass always includes the intentions of a local community as well as the needs of all people throughout the world. In the Eucharistic prayer, we pray for the community and those scattered throughout the world. What does a renewed liturgical practice mean for specific Mass intentions? Canon law speaks of applying the Mass for anyone living and dead (see Canon 901). The practice also has roots in history, especially during medieval times, when participation at Mass was at a low. Asking the priest to remember an intention kept people active and connected their needs to those of the wider Church. Vatican II stressed active participation in its liturgical renewal, so asking specific intentions needs a renewed understanding. Special intentions provide a value we become aware of others needs and troubles. If we are aware of how these troubles affect a member of our parish, we can not only pray for that person but reach out and help. However, the Eucharist does not give grace only to those named in special intentions. The grace God gives through the Eucharist is meant for the whole Church. God s grace builds us up in holiness. Since people find special intentions important, the response from pastors is important in helping people understand how God s grace affects everyone. Fr. John Schmidt, CSsR Sunday, October 15th Please join us! Fighting Hunger in Our Community Register to walk on Oct. 15th. Collect donations for persons who wish to sponsor a walker. We encourage all students in the Faith Formation classes and their families to join us. This is an excellent project for our Confirmation classes. Sister Rosaire Anne has pledge cards to solicit sponsors. Call or Recycle Bottles and Cans at Cashback redemption Center They will donate 6 cents per return. Located at 306 Adams Street Be Prepared to donate loose change or more in the second collection on October 8th at all our Masses. If you have a large container with coins that have been piling up feel free to bring it to the Rectory or the Sacristy as a donation Today s readings speak of our freedom to choose obedience or disobedience to God, and of the very real effects of our choices. God s love for us is such that while he desires our union with him, he allows us to respond to his love as we choose. In the first reading, Ezekiel writes of the choice of each person to turn toward or away from virtue, and toward or away from virtue, and toward or away from wickedness. In this way, we choose life or death. Paul s letter to the Philippians encourages us to be united in heart and mind, and act selflessly. In Matthew s Gospel, Jesus tells the parable Of the two sons one who is initially disobedient but ultimately chooses obedience to the father, and the other son who claims obedience but does not fulfil the will of the father. Jesus teaches us that God, who is Mercy desires our obedience in word and deed always every day. I know how generous all of you are especially for those most in need of help. Your kindness in gifts to second collections and your generous weekly gifts for the parish. I come to you again on behalf of the HOPE Appeal to see if you would consider giving another gift. And also if you have not given a gift that you could see your way clear to give a gift for this year. Thank You all for your kind generous hearts that make me very happy as your pastor. For a little smile church bulletin bloopers = The Fasting & Prayer Conference includes meals. For those of you who have children and don t know it, we have nursery downstairs during the Masses. At Mass today Miss Charlene Mason sang I will not pass this way again, giving obvious pleasure to the congregation. Please pray for our seminarians and for more Vocations to the Priesthood for our diocese and also remember all our sick. Fr. H

Faith Lights Our Way There is an urgent need...to see once again that faith is a light, for once the flame of faith dies out, all other lights begin to dim. The lights of faith is unique, since it is capable of illuminating every aspect of human existence. For a light to be this powerful, it cannot come from ourselves; it must come from a more primordial source; in a word, it must come from God. Faith is born of an encounter with the living God who calls us and reveals his love, a love which preceded us and upon which we can lean for security and for building our lives.
