For they all contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, her whole living. MARK 12:43-33 Jesus gets right to the point we are all called to give money to support the mission of the Church, regardless of our circumstance. No gift is too small or insignificant! Giving money to support the mission of our local parish is a matter of our faith, just like praying and participating in parish ministries. 3 THIRTY SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ NOVEMBER 8, 2015 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK outskirts of Rome, when he met up with Leo and his procession of priests, monks, deacons and choir singers, carrying monstrances, crosses and banners and singing hymns and psalms. No one knows what Leo and The Meeting of Leo the Great and Attila, a fresco Attila by Raphael, Apostolic Palace, Vatican City, talked about, but Leo succeeded in persuading the Mongol leader to turn away from Rome with the help of an inducement of money. A short time later, Leo met with less success against the Vandal invader Gaiseric, but at least the Pope persuaded him to content himself with a few days of looting. Although Leo did not personally attend the Ecumenical Council of Chalcedon (451), one of the most important occasions in the doctrinal history of the Church, his two representatives ran it. Leo s written communication to the Council, the largest held to that point, was called his Tome. It sets forth, in very clear language, the classical Catholic teaching about how Christ has two natures (divine and human) in his single person, making it one of the most important theological statements in the Church s history. When it was read to the bishops assembled at Chalcedon, they exclaimed, This is the faith of the Fathers and of the Apostles. This we all believe. Peter has spoken through Leo. Tuesday is the feast of Pope St. Leo the Great (d. 461) who didn t win the honorific at the end of his name from a boardwalk game. He is best known for his courageous dealings with barbarian conquerors who threatened Rome in its time of precipitous decline as the Dark Ages took hold and for his effective assertion of papal power in Church matters. The historian Henri Daniel-Rops captured the force and plenitude of his virtues splendidly: St. Leo has all the characteristics of the born leader. Clear-sighted, exact, and methodical, he possessed the kind of brain which instinctively analyses the most complex problems and finds the practical solution to them. His was a firm, unflinching character; the hostile situation never had the slightest effect on him; when everything was on the verge of catastrophe he remained steadfast, and his wonderful serenity brought peace of mind to those troubled folk around him. He had, too, a generous spirit, eternally accessible, permeated with the love of Christ; though he dominated the misfortunes of his age it must not be thought that he was insensible to them. And all these qualities, of which he was fully conscious because he knew to what high purpose he dedicated them, rested on a base of this humility; his sense of mission only increased this humility. Do not judge the heritage by the unworthiness of the inheritor, he once murmured, and this sentence sums him up absolutely. It epitomizes the faith and bearing of a true Christian. Attila the Hun, leading his fearsome mounted archers out of the Asian plains, devastated what today is Germany, France and Italy. In 452, he had reached the Msgr. INTERFAITH THANKSGIVING PRAYER SERVICE NOVEMBER 22 BREAKFAST SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8 The annual breakfast, Tricky Tray and 50/50 Raffle to help support the thousands of refugee children who are forced to flee the war in Eastern Ukraine will be held TODAY, Sunday, November 8 in the Saint Joseph School GYM. Breakfast will be served from 8 am 12 noon. The annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service will be held this year on Sunday, November 22 at 4:00 pm at Temple Avodat Shalom (385 Howland Avenue, River Edge). In addition to Saint Joseph and Temple Avodat Shalom, participating congregations include St. Peter the Apostle, The Reformed Church of Oradell, Annunciation Episcopal Church, the First Congregational Church of River Edge, the Central Unitarian Church of Paramus and Grace Lutheran Church. Help represent Saint Joseph at this beautiful prayer service that has become a very special tradition in our community. Breakfast tickets are $8.00 for adults and $4.00 for children at the door. 4 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ A DAY OF SERVICE THANK YOU Raking leaves for seniors On Saturday, October 17, we had our parish s Fifth Annual Day of Service. Approximately 80 members of the parish gathered in front of the lower school for a prayer service adults, children, families and single individuals and then put their faith into action by serving others. Some people cleaned the church while others helped pack clothes for needy children. Some went to visit elderly parishioners to brighten their day. Others gathered baby items and sent them to Englewood while some people made baskets for newborn babies which were donated to the Lighthouse Pregnancy Center in Hawthorne. Some people cleaned yards for seniors who needed the help. Everyone enjoyed a great lunch prepared and served by volunteers. Our warmest thanks to the Knights of Columbus for their donation of $200 to offset the expenses of the lunch and to Deborah Provencher from the Lighthouse Pregnancy Center for a presentation explaining their services and accomplishments towards Right to Life. And thank you to all who donated baby items and coats and clothing in our collections prior to the Day of Service. Also thank you to all who came back and participated in the 5:00 pm Mass. The Day of Service was visible proof that what we do at the altar of the Lord leads us to love our neighbor. It was also a sign that when we come to Mass we not only offer our prayer and worship to God but also the good works we all do every day and especially during our Day of Service. Also be advised that we made $130 on the car wash which will be used for church maintenance. Your generous donations will go to the Food Pantry at the Church of the Ascension in New Milford and to parishioners in need at our Brother/ Sister Parish, St. Joseph s in Jersey City. All men in the parish who have made Cornerstone are invited to attend this monthly meeting to enjoy great camaraderie, spiritual renewal, and to plan for our next Cornerstone Retreat. Heavenly Father, on this day, help us remember those who gave of themselves to keep us safe and secure. Enkindle in our consciences a desire to serve those who served their country selflessly. Give us the grace to aid those who have given aid and protection to us and others both here and overseas. Let us never forget the causes for which they fought or the bravery they showed on the battlefield. May we be always be mindful of those who paid the price for our freedom, just as your Son gave his life to free us from the bondage of sin. Amen. Mass is offered for the support, healing and recovery of not only the man/woman directly infected with the abuse of alcohol or drugs, but also for anyone involved in the life of the alcoholic or drug addict.
