The members of our parish music ministry will be showcasing their talents when they perform selections from a variety of styles of Christmas music, including traditional, religious, contemporary and popular. MARY, THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD JANUARY 1 SOLEMNITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY, MOTHER OF GOD JANUARY 1 A HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION Masses for the holy day will be celebrated: Monday, December 31 at 5:00 pm Tuesday, January 1 at 7:30 am 9:00 am 10:30 am 12:00 noon This solemnity is a rather recent addition to the cycle of seasons, Sundays, and feasts in our liturgical year. We have Pope Paul VI to thank for the 1974 enshrining of the devotion to Mary into our calendar on January 1. It is also a day in our calendar as a World Day for Peace. Let us pray God of heaven and earth, you came to us and took our earthly flesh through the gift of Mary's yes. She is our Mother in faith, as she is your earthly mother. We are thankful beyond our ability to thank you for the gift of her Son as our brother and savior. Through her self-giving, we have been reconciled to you. Bless us as we begin this New Year and endow us with the desire and Ability to create a world of peace. 3 HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH ~ DECEMBER 30, 2018 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Acts of Violence 2018 is about to end, taking with it the following events, many of them, unfortunately, regrettable. At the Inter-Continental Hotel in Kabul Afghanistan, gunmen killed 19, 14 of them foreigners, hurling 3 or 4 of them from upper-floor rooms. U. S. General John Votel commented: As we have always said, this is a challenging security environment. In a follow-up report on the Nigerian girls of Chibok who were captured in 2014: Of the 276 who were kidnapped, half have escaped or have been rescued, 13 or more are dead and 112 are missing. Boko Haram rebels still hold thousands of children. Some, mostly girls, have been forced to participate in bombings. At Parkland High School in Broward County, Florida, Nikolaus Cruz, 19, killed 17 and wounded many more in a shooting attack. Worried citizens had previously reported him to federal authorities, who failed to follow up. In Surabaya, Indonesia, 7 were killed and dozens injured in coordinated bombings (by members of a single family loyal to ISIS) of 3 Christian churches, including a Catholic one. Indonesia, the world s largest Muslim country, has 25 million Christians, 10% of the nation s population. An attack on Pittsburgh s Tree of Life Synagogue killed 11 and wounded 6, including 4 police. The shooter, Robert Bowers, 46, was wounded and arrested. ISIS gunmen killed 7 Coptic Orthodox Christian pilgrims in Egypt, near where they killed 28 last year. Scandals: Dr. Larry Nasser of Michigan State University, longtime team doctor for the U. S. women s gymnastic team, was sentenced to 175 years in jail for molesting more than 150 girls. The fall-out cost the university s president and athletic director their jobs. Entertainment moguls Harvey Weinstein and Les Moonves (both of whom saw to the production of programs insulting to Catholics), comedian and TV star Bill Cosby, and gambling impresario Steve Wynn were all involved in widely publicized incidents of sexual misbehavior, in most cases involving a large number of abused women. Other Happenings: Pope Francis agreed to accept 7 Chinesegovernment-appointed bishops in an effort to expand the Church s growth in China. This followed an earlier precedent in the USSR. Previous bishops who were loyal to the Vatican will have to step aside to make way for the new ones. The Pope does have veto power over government nominees. The New England Confectionary Company announced that it was discontinuing the production of its chalk-like Necco Wafers, which it had been making since I won t miss the licoriceflavored ones at all and even the other flavors, probably. 12 teens and their coach were rescued from being trapped in a Thailand cave after a two-week ordeal. The rescue was a complicated drama, made all the more intense by looming monsoon rains. A Thai navy SEAL died assisting in the rescue. Uri Rafaeli, an 83-year-old great-grandfather, had his house seized by Oakland County, Michigan, for inadvertent non-payment of property taxes amounting to $8.41. The state s Appeals Court has upheld the confiscation. Things got to this point after Rafaeli tried to pay a $496 tax bill he had overlooked, but neglected to include the $8.41 interest charge he had incurred. Mr. Rafaeli has said that he will ask the U. If you would like to be a part of this, by helping to prepare and/or serve the dinner please call If you would like to make a donation to help cover the cost, it will certainly be appreciated! Mass is offered for those directly affected as well as anyone involved in the life of the alcoholic or drug addict. For information please call MIRACULOUS MEDAL NOVENAS POSTPONED There will be NO Miraculous Medal Novena on Monday, December 24 because of Christmas Eve, and no Novena on Monday, December 31 because of the Vigil Mass for the holy day Mary Mother of God. The faithful are encouraged to say the Novena prayers at home. The weekly Miraculous Medal Novena at Saint Joseph Church will resume on Monday, January 7 at 7:00 pm.
