That leaves only a little over $8,000 for Saint Joseph Parish to reach its goal. Parishes that exceed their goal will qualify for a rebate. You can still make a pledge which you can fulfill in monthly installments or as a one-time gift. Envelopes are available in the church literature racks or at the rectory/parish office on Harrison Street. MASS TIMES TO CHANGE JULY 5-6 After extensive consultation with the Parish Pastoral Council, we have decided to alter our Sunday Mass schedule beginning the weekend of July 5-6. The revised schedule will be as follows: (New times are in boldface.) 3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Two American women have won the Nobel Prize for Literature. The poet Toni Morrison received it most recently, in The first winner was novelist and biographer Pearl Buck ( ), who gained the honor in She was born in West Virginia, the daughter of a Presbyterian couple who became missionaries in China. She learned to speak Chinese before she spoke English and had her initial education in Shanghai before returning to the United States for her college degree. Afterwards she went back to China when her mother became ill there. She worked at a number of Chinese schools and universities teaching English before eventually moving to Pennsylvania. She is best known for The Good Earth, her novel about Chinese peasants, which sold 1.8 million copies the year it was published (1931). The book won a Pulitzer Prize and also became a feature film. Pearl Buck s life had its trials, especially a failed first marriage, from which she had a daughter who was mentally handicapped. Pearl and her second husband, besides becoming the parents of another daughter, also raised nine adopted children. She was keenly aware of the importance of homemaking, something she wrote about in her book To My Daughters, With Love: Do I, who am a professional writer, believe that homemaking is the most important work in the world for a woman? Yes I do, and not only for others but for myself. As a writer, I know that it is essential for a woman to be a homemaker, and this is true whatever else she is. Man and woman, we have our separate but cooperating functions to fulfill for our own completion, as well as for the human beings we serve because we are responsible for them. Woman, the housewife and homemaker, creates more than she knows. While she sweeps and cleans and makes beds, while she cooks and washes and puts away, she is creating human beings. She is shaping dispositions and building character and making harmony. To all the mothers of our parish: happy Mother s Day! May the love you have given your families be returned to you generously. (Continued above) FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER, MAY 11, 2014 She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs at the days to come. She opens her mouth in wisdom, and on her tongue is kindly counsel. She watches the conduct of her household. Her children rise up and praise her. Give her a reward of her labors, and let her works praise her. Proverbs 31 3 Wednesday is the feast of St. Matthias, whom the early Church named as an Apostle to succeed the traitor Judas. The method by which he was selected may seem curious to us. Acts 1, tells us that he and another candidate, both of whom had been disciples since the early days of Jesus public ministry and witnesses to his resurrection, were nominated. The winner was determined by casting lots, that is, by using marked sticks or stones to, in effect, leave the choice up to God, a procedure resorted to elsewhere in Scripture (Lev 16, 7-10; Prov 16, 33) and one that was by no means superstitious or frivolous. Msgr. David Hubba MADONNA OF THE STREETS The portrait shown opposite and commonly known as the Madonna of the Streets was painted by Italian artist Roberto Ferruzzi ( ) and originally called La Madonnina, or The Little Mother. It was first publicly shown at an art exhibition in Venice, Italy in The models were 11 year old Angelina Cian and the baby brother she was holding close to keep warm. The artist spotted them one day on the street and persuaded the girl to pose for him. The image has become a popular representation of the Blessed Mother and the infant Jesus. The location of the original painting is unknown, but it has been widely reproduced on prayer cards, medals, greeting cards, and more. A famous mosaic of the image graces a shrine on the eastern wall of the Saints Peter and Paul Church in San Francisco, California. The Sisters of Life, a religious community found in 1991 by John Cardinal O Connor, receive a medal of the image at their first profession of vows. A reviewer on the University of Dayton website remarks, Many people see in this picture a direct and personal challenge, expressed in Mary s look, to open our hearts to her Son. In honor of Mother s Day, a holy card with the image of the Madonna of the Streets and a special prayer for mothers is included in this bulletin. Blessed is the Mother who lets the Lord be her guiding hand. Where Faith brings her family courage. Whose Wisdom comes from God. And whose children stand and honor her.

4 MOTHER S DAY EVENING OF PRAYER MAY 14 Join our Ministry of Motherhood (M.O.M.) on Wednesday, May 14, from 7:30-9:00 pm at the Parish Life Center (268 Grove Street, Oradell) for a chance to reflect, pray together and celebrate the joys and challenges of Motherhood. The evening will include: a steaming hot cup of coffee or tea made for you, along with light refreshment time to nurture your heart, mind and body and be inspired by the example of our Blessed Mother time to relax, share with other mothers, and be filled with a mother s much needed Grace! All mothers, new and experienced, are invited! They will process in as a group. They will also crown the statue of Mary in the sanctuary. Come and be a witness to this beautiful expression of the children s love for Jesus and his Blessed Mother. At the conclusion of Mass, the children and their families will attend a special Communion Breakfast in the gym. Bring Flowers of the Rarest MAY CROWNINGS AT SAINT JOSEPH A popular annual Catholic tradition during the month of May is to honor Mary and recognize her virtues by placing on her statue a crown of flowers. Here at Saint Joseph, there will be three devotions dedicated to Mary at which her statue will be crowned and to which all are welcome! The first will take place on Saturday, May 17 after the Mass when the Legion of Mary will crown the statue of Our Lady in Mary s Chapel. The second is Sunday, May 18, at the Mass when our parish children who have just made their First Communions gather together. They will crown the statue of Our Lady of the Grapes in the upper Church. The third will be on Monday, May 19, when Saint Joseph School students will assemble at 2:00 pm in the upper church to crown the statue of Our Lady of Grace which stands in our Harrison Street foyer. SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ 4 ATTENTION TEENS! NEXT T.A.R.G.E.T. MEETING MAY 18 Students in grades 9-12 are invited to come to our next T.A.R.G.E.T. Youth Group meeting on Sunday, May 18 at 1:30 pm in the Parish Life Center on Grove Street. Come worship with us at the 12:30 pm Mass and then join Fr. Andrew and our Youth Group members for faith, friendship and fun. It doesn t matter what high school you attend. All are welcome. Become a part of this exciting ministry that s designed just for you! THIRD SATURDAY PRAYER MAY 17 All parishioners are invited to join the Legion of Mary for our Third Saturday of Prayer on May 17 after the Mass in Mary s Chapel. We will honor Our Lady with prayer, song and the crowning of her statue. ROY OUR KNIGHTS TO THE RESCUE IN GRATITUDE I thank the Lord for the gift of life and blessings which he bestowed upon my mother, +Nancy B. Regaspi, during her 78 years of earthly life. They are signs to us of God s goodness and of our fellowship with the saints in Christ. What a great privilege the Lord had given me that my mother died in my arms, commending her soul to our Creator on Holy Monday, April 14, 2014 in the Philippines. On behalf of my family, I express my sincerest gratitude to all the parishioners of Saint Joseph and all my dear friends for your prayers, mass cards, support, comfort and consolation you gave us during these difficult times. For tickets and additional information, contact SEbbels@saint-peter.org ROSARY BEADS FOR THE MILITARY The Knights of Columbus will be collecting rosary beads to be given to the chaplains of the Archdiocese of the Military. The chaplains will distribute the rosaries to the troops and to others they serve. The K of C will have canisters at the doors of the church and will collect the rosaries throughout the month of May. 5 The Knights of Columbus, Saint Joseph Council #3814, have graciously donated $600 from their St. Patrick s Day Dinner proceeds to launch the church repairs mentioned in last week s bulletin. The Knights continued generosity to Saint Joseph, in particular, their donation of a digital piano for use in our school music classes and to enhance liturgies in the gym, was also recently acknowledged in the national K of C magazine Columbia. 6 SING TO THE LORD Serve the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful song. (Psalm 100:2) As anyone who attends Mass at Saint Joseph Church knows, we have been blessed with wonderful leaders of song. One who has shared his remarkable talent with our parish for the past four years is Domenick Panfile. When asked what he loves about Saint Joseph, Domenick is quick to speak of the welcoming atmosphere and how the people here love to sing, which makes my job easier! In fact, it has been Domenick s beautiful voice leading the assembly, along with our wonderful parish music ministry, that has made it easier for all of us to sing out joyfully to the Lord. Saint Joseph Parish discovered Domenick s talent in 2010 when he sang at his cousin s wedding. Invited by the music director to sing at Sunday Mass, he vividly remembers his first time as a cantor at Saint Joseph and the feelings it inspired in him. Being part of the parish music ministry is not a job, says Domenick, it is a real ministry, a calling. Young Domenick answered that calling at a very young age. He has loved to sing since he was four years old, joined the children s choir at Sacred Heart Church in Haworth at eight, and spent seven years serving in the music ministry of St. Mary s in Dumont. With a passion for music, Domenick explored all aspects of it, starting voice training at age 11, discovering opera and classical music at 15 when he attended a dress rehearsal of Carmen, developing a love for Broadway music ( Phantom of the Opera was the first play he saw), and learning to play the piano and organ. SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ In addition to displaying his flair for both popular and classical music at our annual parish Afternoon of Christmas Joy concerts produced by our talented music director Monroe Quinn, Domenick has been performing since 2011 as one of the very popular Tenors On Stage alongside the gifted Peter Greco. When asked what some of the highlights of his years at Saint Joseph have been, Domenick speaks of the heaven on earth moment of the 2012 Easter Vigil when Cardinal McCarrick celebrated Mass at Saint Joseph. It was so exciting to sing in front of such an inspirational figure in the Catholic Church. He also mentions how happy he has been to be part of the Cornerstone Retreat Masses, (continued above) 6 especially when he was able to share those experiences with his family. Domenick will graduate this month from Montclair State University with a degree in Music Education/Voice and begin his search for a full-time job in the field. In the meantime, he has happily accepted a part-time position as the new music director of St. Andrew Parish in Westwood. Sadly for Saint Joseph, it means he will be leaving us. My four years at Saint Joseph have been absolutely fantastic, says Domenick. I would like to thank the staff, past and present, the members of the parish music ministry, and all the parishioners for their support. I ask that you keep me in your prayers. I will miss you and ask God to continue to bless the people of Saint Joseph Parish. We will miss you too, Domenick. We have been blessed to have you at Saint Joseph.
