Proceeds will go to help send a special needs child to Lourdes, France with the American Special Children Pilgrimage Group. LENTEN INDIVIDUAL CONFESSION The opportunity for individual confession is offered every Monday night in Lent from 6:30 7:00 in the Reconciliation Room located at the Elm Street (main) entrance of the church. STATIONS OF THE CROSS The Stations of the Cross are celebrated every Friday in Lent at 2:00 pm with the schoolchildren (except April 4 and April 18) and at 7:30 pm. All are welcome. OUR LADY OF FATIMA FIRST SATURDAY MASS AND LUNCHEON APRIL 5 Every year our Social Concerns Committee hosts a special Mass for individuals who are handicapped and have a difficult time getting to Mass or social events. The Mass this year is scheduled for April 5 at 12 noon and will be a Healing Mass with Anointing of the Sick, followed by the recitation of the Rosary and then a luncheon in our lower school gym. All facilities used are handicapped-accessible. The invitation to this Mass and luncheon is extended to our homebound parishioners as well. 3 SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT, MARCH 16, 2014 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Father Gary Caster will preach our parish mission this Monday and Tuesday from 7:30 to 9:00 pm. And since Wednesday is the solemnity of Saint Joseph, we will also have a special 7:30 Mass that evening to celebrate our patronal feast. Father Caster, Catholic chaplain at Williams College in Massachusetts, is the author of the well-received book Joseph: The Man Who Raised Jesus (Franciscan Media, 2013). His talks will emphasize St. Joseph s beautiful qualities, especially as they relate to Lent. Concluding each of the three days, there will be light refreshments, so all who attend can meet fellow parishioners. Wednesday s refreshments will be at the Parish Life Center, which has recently reopened after the installation of the new furnace it needed. If you haven t yet seen this building, which dates from 1830 and was renovated during Father Tom Iwanowski s pastorate, this would be a perfect chance to see its improved state. Thanks to all whose hard work has made the mission possible. Jeannie Tenaglia and Dan Young, parents of Saint Joseph School children and members of our Parish Pastoral Council, directed planning for the mission, helped formulate its prayer services, and did a great deal to encourage our people to attend its events. Diane Hellriegel, our Communications Director, has done her usual energetic and creative work, publicizing the mission and handling many of the arrangements it needed. Thanks too to the parish organizations that took responsibility for each evening s refreshments: Pat Fakharzadeh and the members of the Legion of Mary (Monday); Families of our Religious Education Program, under the direction of Deacon George Montalvo and Arlene Kennedy (Tuesday); and Joan Murray and Glynnis Doda and the Social Concerns Committee (Wednesday). HOLY THURSDAY RITE OF WASHING OF FEET The Lord Jesus washed the feet of his disciples at the Last Supper as a sign of the new commandment that Christians should love one another. For centuries, the Church has imitated the Lord through the ritual enactment of that commandment in the washing of feet on Holy Thursday. If you would like to be part of the rite of foot washing at our celebration of the Mass of the Lord s Last Supper on Holy Thursday, April 17, please call the rectory/parish office at or speak to Monsignor Hubba. As a youth, Saint Patrick was captured and sent into slavery in Ireland for six years during the early Fifth Century. There he developed a great love for the Irish People. After escaping, he returned to them, working for 29 years to transform Ireland into a Catholic country. His recollection of how he resolved to accept his mission has come down to us: moment I was reading the letter, I thought I heard the voices of those who dwelt beside the wood of Focluth, which is by the western sea. with one voice they cried: We beg you, holy youth, to come and walk once more among us. One night in a dream I had a vision of a man named Victoricus coming from Ireland and carrying a bundle of letters. He gave one of them to me. I read the beginning of the letter that claimed to be the Voice of the Irish. PLC REOPENED Due to the generosity of a donor who wishes to remain anonymous, our Facilities Director, Tom Meli, was able to have the problem we were having with the boiler in our historic Parish Life Center, located at 268 Grove Street, corrected. Though there is still some work that must be done, we are able to use the parish meeting rooms on the first floor sooner than expected. 6 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from Matthew 17:1-9. Peter, James, and John had walked up a mountain with Jesus. When they got to the top of the mountain, Jesus gave them a vision of what he would look like in Heaven. Rays of bright light came from his face. His robes became white. Then a voice from a cloud said, "This is my Son whom I love. In him I am well pleased. Listen to him." Peter, James and John were scared and fell on the ground and covered their heads with their arms. Then Jesus touched them and said, "Don't be afraid." Jesus wants us to like Peter, James and John. As long as we trust in Jesus, we do not have to be afraid. God will take care of us. Jesus became transformed to show them what he would look like in Heaven. NOTE TO PARENTS There will be no Liturgy of the Word with Children on March 16th. MISSION OF THE WEEK When I am afraid, I will remember that God is always with me. 6
