LUKE 19:8 We are all called to graciously give back to the Lord in proportion to the blessings we have been given. This means everyone isn t called to give the same amount, but is called to give equal sacrifice. No amount is too small or insignificant! Open your heart. How is God calling you? NOVENA CANCELED THIS MONDAY Due to the All Saints holy day anticipatory Mass on Monday, October 31 at 7:30 pm in the Upper Church, the Miraculous Medal Novena will NOT be held. The Novena will return to its regularly scheduled day and time (Mondays at 7:00 pm) on November 7. See page 3 for All Saints Day Mass Schedule. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION NOVEMBER 2 Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be held on Wednesday, November 2 in Mary s Chapel from 9:00 am 5:00 pm. The Legion of Mary invites you to attend. FIRST FRIDAY DEVOTION NOVEMBER 4 Join us for the First Friday holy hour devotion to the Sacred Heart on Friday, November 4 immediately after the Mass in Mary s Chapel. 3 THIRTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ OCTOBER 30, 2016 Because Tuesday is All Saints Day, I thought I would tell you about a saint who is only fairly well known by most Catholics, St. Robert Bellarmine ( ), the greatest defender of Catholic theology in the Counter-Reformation era. He came from Italy s Tuscan region. After joining the Jesuits at age 18, he was ordained ten years later. He taught theology first at Louvain and then at Rome s new Gregorianum, founded by St. Ignatius Loyola, where he specialized in upholding the Church s teachings in the face of widespread Protestant attacks on them, an expertise that led to his being named to the office of papal theologian. He served the Church as a Bishop and a Cardinal, and also played a large role in the composition of the Catechism of the Christian Doctrine, which was widely used for three hundred years, an accomplishment that had much to do with Robert s designation as the patron saint of catechists. He was also one of the most eloquent preachers of his time, even though he was so tiny in size that he had to preach standing on a stool. There is even an American connection to St. Robert, in a way. When Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, he drew on Bellarmine s thoughts to construct the famous passage about people having unalienable rights. St. Robert is well known for his role in the Galileo affair. It is hardly ever mentioned that the two men (continued above) FROM THE PASTOR S DESK were good friends. In fact, Galileo dedicated one of his books to Bellarmine. In an era when the Church s teachings were under widespread attack, St. Robert urged Galileo to present his views on astronomy cautiously: Theologians are touchy these days sore from the stings of a thousand wasps of heresy. They won t take kindly to what they may think is another dangerous novelty. Put out the book as theory; let truth prove it fact. Galileo, very understandably from his point of view, chose to proceed more aggressively, with important consequences for the history of science. Sir Robert was a man of immense holiness. His personal lifestyle was strongly ascetic. Even though, as a Cardinal, he had to reside in a Roman palace, he lived in it with utter simplicity, eating a diet composed largely of bread and garlic, the food of the poor, as he called it. He did without a fire in his fireplace so he could donate the money he saved to ease the sufferings of the poor. As befits a saint, he was heroically charitable to the needy. He even ordered the red woolen draperies of his residence to be taken down so they could be remade into clothing for those who were shivering in the cold, remarking that The walls won t catch cold. Canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1930, he was declared a Doctor of the Church the following year. He is certainly an admirable and appealing saint. Msgr. ALL SOULS MASS NOVEMBER 2 The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, which takes place on Wednesday, November 2, is a day particularly set aside to pray for those who have died. We invite you to join us for Mass at 7:30 pm in the upper church as we pray for our deceased relatives and friends. We will prayerfully remember our parishioners and friends who died during the past 12 months. Their names will be read aloud and a bell will toll in their memory during this Mass. All are invited to attend. K OF C MEMORIAL MASS NOVEMBER 4 There will be a Memorial Mass for the deceased brothers of the Knights of Columbus Saint Joseph Council #3814 and their family members on Friday, November 4 at 7:30 pm in Mary s Chapel. All K of C members and family and friends of Saint Joseph Church and the Church of the Ascension are welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served after Mass. 3

4 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ LOVING MEMORIES OF OUR DEARLY DEPARTED This past year Saint Joseph Church mourned the loss of a number of parishioners who contributed greatly to the life of our parish. They generously offered their time and talents to give honor and glory to God: serving in the various liturgical ministries to help make our Masses and devotions beautiful, reaching out to those in need through our Social Concerns ministry, serving both God and their fellow parishioners with great love and commitment. (The names of all our beloved deceased who had funerals at Saint Joseph Church this past year will appear in next week s bulletin.) Mary Glynn was a longtime Minister of Holy Communion at Saint Joseph. Born in County Mayo, Ireland, she was a registered nurse at Holy Name Hospital and was known both there and at Saint Joseph for her kindness and compassion. She was married to her dear husband Frank for 45 years and was blessed with five children and seven grandchildren. Jane Emanuel was deeply committed to both her church and her community. As the director of our ministry of lectors for many years, she prepared new readers, scheduled them for Masses, and served as a reader herself. She was a longtime member of Saint Joseph s Cornerstone and Social Concerns ministries. She worked as a teacher of English as a second language and volunteered for many civic groups. From , she served in the U.S. Army as a member of the Women s Army Corps, and in 2011 New Milford honored her both for her service and her community involvement when they named her Grand Marshall of the Memorial Day Parade. Jane was married to her dear husband Stanley (who predeceased her) and was the proud mother of two sons, grandmother to seven, and great-grandmother to six. Alfred O Toole served Saint Joseph for many years as both an Altar Server and a Minister of Holy Communion, as well as volunteering with the Cub Scouts and Meals on Wheels. He had a long, distinguished career with AT&T. He was married to his loving wife Anne for 54 years and was the proud father of six children and the grandfather of sixteen. Marilyn Kahill was devoted to Saint Joseph Church. Over 38 years as a parishioner, she served as a lector, a Minister of Holy Communion, a member of the Parish Council and the chair of Social Concerns. She taught religious education for ten years and worked as an administrative assistant at Saint Joseph School. She volunteered with our T.A.R.G.E.T. youth group, visited the elderly at various nursing homes, helped Fr. Jim McKenna in his outreach ministry, and was a big supporter of our brother/sister parish, St. Brigid/St. Joseph in Jersey City. She was very active in Boy Scouting, guiding more than 90 young men to Eagle Scout. She was honored as Grand Marshal of Oradell s 2011 Fourth of July parade for her contributions to Scouting. Marilyn lost her husband Joseph early (our lower church was originally refurbished in the 1970s in his memory). She was the proud mother of a daughter and a son and grandmother of four. Rose Ronda loved Saint Joseph Church and served in many different ministries for many years. She was a longtime lector and a member of our Social Concerns ministry. She taught religious education to special needs children in our parish preparing them to receive the sacraments. When the building on Grove Street was first opened as our Parish Life Center and a small library was included, she served as the parish librarian. She was married to Edgar and was the mother of a son and a daughter. She was the beloved grandmother of three and was also blessed with a great-grandson. John ( Jack ) Verrier became the voice of Saint Joseph Parish when he served as the narrator of our 100th Anniversary video in As a longtime lector (together with his dear wife Jo-Ann who predeceased him), he used his rich voice to regularly proclaim the Good News at Mass. Founder of his own company (J.A. Heilferty Co./ Primepak), he shared his business knowledge with the parish as Chair of the Parish Finance Council. Along with Jo-Ann he was active in Renew, through which he made many lifelong friends. He cared deeply about his church and was dedicated to his family of six children, 25 grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren William ( Bill ) Coogan was called home to the Lord at the impressive age of 98. For 65 years, he was an integral and beloved part of Saint Joseph Parish. In the 1950s he drove Saint Joseph pastor Monsignor Thomas Curry (who built our current church) as the Monsignor searched for the properties that the Archdiocese of Newark would later purchase to build many area churches and schools. Bill s career in banking (he retired as Vice President of East River Savings Bank) led to his service to Saint Joseph as an official counter of our weekly collections (which he did with unerring accuracy well into his nineties). He served as a Minister of Holy Communion, a member of the Parish Pastoral Council, a past Grand Knight of St. Joseph s Knights of Columbus Council #3814 (the K of C Hall is dedicated in his name), and a founding member of the Saint Joseph Athletic Association. He shared his long life with his beloved wife, Pat, who blessed him with six children. He was an adored PaPa to 13 grandchildren and Great- PaPa to 21 great-grandchildren. 4

Although our military service may be behind us, we continue to serve God, Country, and Home through our activities to benefit needy veterans and families of veterans in need. 6 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ SJC PARISHIONERS ATTEND JUBILEE OF MERCY PILGRIMAGE WASHINGTON, D.C. Thirty parishioners from Saint Joseph Parish joined members of the Church of the Annunciation (Paramus), St. John s (Bergenfield), Our Lady of Mercy (Park Ridge), and Queen of Peace (Maywood) as passengers on one of the 75 buses that traveled from the Archdiocese of Newark to the Jubilee Year of Mercy Pilgrimage to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. on October 22. Once there, they gathered with almost 4,000 people to attend Mass (celebrated by Archbishop John Myers) and to fulfill the obligations for a plenary indulgence including passing through the Holy Door of the Basilica.
