3 SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ JULY 19, 2015 time for spiritual reading and praying as a family; help others outside your own family circle. Play games with them [your children] and pray with them. Teach them how to pray, and how to love, and how to forgive. Remind them of their great dignity as Christian men and women. Show them what powerful agents of change they can be in the Church and in the world. This is a book worth reading. I would recommend it for young people who would like to start a family, for families in the making, and for everyone. For a free copy go to This week we again welcome Deacon George Montalvo, Saint Joseph Director of Religious Education, who will be filling in for Monsignor Hubba while he is on vacation. FROM THE DEACON S DESK Along with preparing for the upcoming Fall semester of our Religious Education program, I am dedicating some time to finding resources for parishioners and especially for parents. As baptized Catholics we often forget that as we grow up physically, we also have to grow spiritually. Our faith in Jesus Christ will only grow if we take care of it by establishing a personal relationship with him, and the Church, through prayer and spiritual reading. Marriage and parenthood does not come with an operation manual. Husbands and wives need a lot of help to grow in love and to raise children as good Christians and good citizens. With this in mind, I read a short book this past week that should become a resource for couples and families: Mission of the Family by Jon Leonetti, Beacon Publishing. In his book, Jon focuses on the important role that families play in the life of each of its members and in the life of the Church. What is the purpose of family? Family life is for conversion, the conversion first of the members of the family, and as we continue to strive to grow in holiness, the conversion of all those around us. Family life is for mission, the mission of bringing the good news of the gospel to everyone we meet and of being the presence of Christ and his Church to those whose lives we touch centers of evangelization, sources of grace and signs of mercy and compassion. The author insists on the premise that you can t give what you don t have. The best gift that we can give to family is to strengthen our relationship with our spouse every day by being the best husband/wife and the best father/mother we can be. The family is a school where we learn how to love, including how to love God. The family is the school of virtue. As St. John Paul II would say: Parents model for their children what life in the Spirit really looks like, and by their example as much as anything else show their kids what it means to be a Christian day in and day out. DEADLINE FOR MEMORIAL PAVERS AUGUST 1 You can still reserve an engraved brick in your name or that of a loved one to be placed in front of any of the statues in our Garden of Saints or added to the Commemorative Brick Path between the church and the grotto. The donation is $125 for each brick. Order forms are available in the parish office/rectory or in our church literature racks. Orders must be received by August 1 so that the bricks can be inscribed and inserted before the Fall. 3

5 SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ JULY 19, 2015 ALZHEIMER S SUPPORT AUGUST 4 and 26 WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES COMING SOON! The Alzheimer s Association will be offering two local education programs for caregivers who have a loved one with Alzheimer s disease or a related dementia. From September 2227 Philadelphia will host the World Meeting of Families. The event will include an Adult Congress (18+) which will feature internationally known and engaging speakers who will talk, present panels and lead workshops so that participants can support each other in the joys and struggles of life, and a Youth Congress (for ages 6-17) that will be an interactive program where young people can build, create, play, listen, serve, and embrace the Mission of Love that Brings Families Fully Alive. PEREGRINE & ANOINTING OF THE SICK JULY 20 Immaculate Conception Church, 211 Summit Street, Norwood, will celebrate their monthly Mass to Saint Peregrine on Monday, July 20 at 7:00 pm. Immediately following the Mass the Novena prayers will be recited. The Anointing of the Sick will be available to anyone immediately following the Novena prayers. PILGRIMAGE CANCELED We regret that the pilgrimage to Portugal and Spain with Fr. Roy in October to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the birth of St. Teresa of Avila has been canceled. St. Peregrine was healed of a cancerous ulcer on his leg which was considered beyond saving. The fame of this event in 1325 spread rapidly round the western Church. Christians, especially the sick, began to invoke his name and seek his intercession for the relief of their suffering and even for a cure from sickness. The canonization of St. Peregrine in 1726 increased people s devotion to him which spread to the universal Church. CATHOLIC HOMESCHOOL CONFERENCE JULY 31 & AUGUST 1 The Immaculate Heart of Mary New York Homeschool Conference will be held at Mercy College (at the Rotonda of Mercy Hall), 555 Broadway, in Dobbs Ferry, on Friday, July 31 (12:00 noon-6:00 pm) and on Saturday, August 1 (9:30 am-3:30 pm). Even on a vacation, a parent never stops performing the tasks of being a parent. That's one reason why so many people desire a vacation after their vacation. There are some people who never rest from work. They have a cell phone to their ear at home, at a restaurant, and, of course, at a hotel during their vacation. Their jobs might be pretty demanding and hopefully they perform their tasks well for their employer, but they always seem preoccupied. Jesus tried to have his apostles take a break and rest in Mark 6. They had been so consumed with the crowds and had not even had a chance to eat. So Jesus took them to a deserted place. However, the crowds found them there too, so Jesus continued to teach. Everyone needs a rest. The problem is that we fail to understand how important it is to rest. We think rest is void of action. Not only is resting an action in itself, but it is sometimes the only time we have to spend with God one-on-one. How can we truly say a relationship with God is important when we never spend time alone with God? Failing to take the time to rest in God's presence is poor stewardship of time. Apostles need it. Workers need it. Parents need it. Everyone needs rest. Some say we never rest because we feel we do not have permission to rest and people will see us as lazy. Read Mark 6.
