STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ. ROMANS 8:16-17 If we are heirs to the kingdom of God, shouldn t we work to build up His kingdom? Shouldn t we be good stewards of our inheritance, using our time, talent and treasure to care for the Church that God has left to us? Our Church is a treasured heirloom from God. Do we treat it that way? 3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK The Knights of Columbus s Catholic Information Service offers pamphlets with splendid explanations of the Faith, many available online at The Luke E. Hart Series, Basic Elements of the Catholic Faith, by the lay theologian Peter Kreeft, has an excellent one on God, with good descriptions of our doctrine of the Holy Trinity, whose feast we celebrate today. We have this teaching only because God has revealed it to us, since human ingenuity would never have been able to discover it on its own. Kreeft notes that while other mysteries tell us what God has done in time for our salvation, the doctrine of the Trinity tells us what God is like in himself, in eternity. And the real god is sure to surprise us: Even created reality shocks our expectations for instance, Einstein s Theory of Relativity. In fact the reason for the doctrine of the Trinity is similar to the reason for Einstein s Theory of Relativity, or any other good scientific theory: it alone explains all the data. The science of theology arises in a way similar to any other science: from data and the need to understand the data. The Church gradually defined the doctrine of the Trinity in her first six ecumenical Councils to explain the data of her Scriptures. In theology as in science, Kreeft explains, the data has to determine the theory, not the other way around. The data for Christian theology are first of all Christ himself. On the other hand, he called God his Father, prayed to him, loved him, taught his teaching, and obeyed his will. On the other hand, he claimed to be one with, and equal to, the Father. And he also promised to send the Spirit. The Scriptural data from which the Church derives the doctrine of the Trinity are Essentially: 1) that there is only one God (Dt 6:4) 2) that the Father is God (Jn 5: 18); 3) that the Son is God (Jn 8:58) and 4) that the Holy Spirit is God (Mt 28:19). God first discloses himself in the Old Testament as Father, or Creator ( outside us); then, in the Gospels, as the Son, or Savior ( beside us); then, in the Acts of the Apostles and in the Church, as the Holy Spirit ( inside us). God s gifts to us express his very being, which is love (1 Jn 4:18), and so offer us an abounding intimacy with the three divine persons. The thirty pamphlets Peter Kreeft has written average about 25 pages in length and offer a first-rate education in Catholicism for very little or no cost. I recommend them highly. If you are searching for God and the meaning of life, or would like to strengthen your faith, the Knights of Columbus offers for home study a series of 30 booklets, the Luke E. Hart Series, providing a comprehensive and basic overview of Catholic belief and practice. Each of the 30 booklets offers a colloquial and contemporary expression of the content of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The series follows the basic teaching of the Catechism, and seeks to make its contents more accessible, not to substitute for it. The booklets are at times poetic, colloquial, playful, and imaginative; at all times, they are faithful to the Faith. 4 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ OUR SACRAMENTS COORDINATOR HAS TWO MORE REASONS TO CELEBRATE If your child has made First Holy Communion or Confirmation at Saint Joseph Parish at any time in the last twenty years, then you were blessed to get to know the kind, talented and gracious woman who has led our Sacraments Program all that time. Mrs. Arlene Kennedy (shown at right in jacketed dress) has always loved helping our parish s second-graders prepare to receive Jesus in the Eucharist, as well as guiding our teens as they journey toward Confirmation. She celebrates joyfully with each and every one of them every year! But this Spring, Mrs. Kennedy had two extra special reasons to celebrate. Both her eldest and her youngest grandchildren were candidates to receive Sacraments. In the photo above Mrs. Kennedy proudly poses with her family on May 8, 2015 at the Confirmation of her eldest granddaughter, Brianna Kennedy Hay (shown in white next to Bishop Dominic Marconi). Arlene and her husband Jim (shown far left) are the proud parents of two daughters, Christie and Kerry, and the grandparents of seven grandchildren. In the photo opposite, Mrs. Kennedy s youngest granddaughter, Elizabeth Gina Spano (shown with her parents Kerry and Greg) celebrates becoming our newest member of the Church at her Baptism on May 16, May God bless Brianna and baby Elizabeth and their wonderful Nana! Saint Joseph Parish has been truly blessed to have had Arlene Kennedy lovingly lead each of our children to the love of Christ and the wisdom of the Holy Spirit all these years. A BLESSED VISIT Our Moment with Holy Mary ministry will be visiting the final resting place of Blessed Miriam Teresa Demjanovich, the Sister of Charity born in Bayonne, NJ who is the first person to be beatified on U.S. soil. The group will travel to the Convent of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth in Convent Station, NJ on Tuesday, June 9 where they will be escorted to the chapel for prayer, then to Blessed Miriam Teresa s crypt and finally to a room to view artifacts from her life. At her beatification Mass, Bishop Arthur Seratelli of the Diocese of Paterson said that Blessed Miriam Teresa, throughout her life and in her writings, gave proof that doing God s will in all things bridges the distance between heaven and earth. 6 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ CATHOLIC WAR VETERANS FUND & MEMBERSHIP DRIVE JUNE SHAWL MINISTRY MEETING JUNE 9 Saint Joseph Shawl Ministry will meet on Tuesday, June 9 from 2:00-4:00 pm in the Parish Life Center on Grove Street. All knitters and crocheters are welcome to join us in making shawls or bring your current yarn project and spend a relaxing afternoon with us. Our ministry has shawls available for those experiencing illness, confinement, bereavement, or other situation. For further information, please contact Barbara Piersa at or Pat DeNicolo at Catholic War Veterans Coordinator Jeff Harm, Post Commander Kurt E. Strobach, and post members of Fr. Washington Post #1710, will be at Saint Joseph before and after all Masses on the weekend of June 1314 for a Membership Recruitment drive and our Cross of Peace fundraiser to help all veterans, including the disabled, who reside at the New Jersey State Veterans Home in Paramus. WITH BLOSSOMS TODAY Our First Communicants led two beautiful processions two weeks ago to crown our statues of the Blessed Mother QUEEN OF THE ANGELS QUEEN OF THE MAY DONATE TO HELP OUR VETERANS We will also be accepting your contributions in any amount, big or small, for the veterans in need. The vets sacrificed so much for us all; it's only fitting that we should be there for them now, to let them know they are loved and appreciated for what they did for their country. The Legion of Mary helped our children crown the statue of Our Lady of the Grapes at the 9:00 am liturgy on Sunday, May 17, attended by the First Communion Class of SEMINARY GOLF OUTING JUNE 18 The second-graders of Saint Joseph School process to the church. Immaculate Conception Seminary s 35th Annual Golf Outing and Dinner will be held on Thursday, June 18 at Essex Fells Country Club. Golfer registration will be at 11:00 am. Single golfers are $450; foursomes are $1,800. Following the round, there will be a reception, dinner, a prize raffle and a cash raffle. Non golfers are invited to cocktails and dinner at 5:30 pm for $200. Proceeds support the men preparing for the priesthood in the Newark Archdiocese.
