KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL 3814 MEMORIAL MASS NOVEMBER 10 The K of C is hosting a Memorial Mass for deceased brothers, sisters and family members on Thursday, November 10 at 7:30 pm at Coogan Hall, located at 199 River Road in New Milford. The Mass will be celebrated by The K of C Chaplin, Rev. George Reilly. All members relatives and friends of St. Joseph and Ascension Parishes are welcome. Refreshments will be served following the Mass. GIVING THOUGHT In today s Gospel Jesus tells a parable about ten bridesmaids who go out to meet the groom. Five are wise and take extra oil. Five are foolish and bring no additional oil. After a long delay, the groom finally arrives. The lamps of the wise are burning brightly, those of the foolish are dark. As Christians we are to welcome the Lord into our lives. We do that if our lives are brightly shinning with work of charity, generosity, kindness and sacrifice. Each good act we do increases the oil that keeps our lamps burning brightly. NOTE: If you could not be with us for Mass last weekend because of the storm and power outages, please be sure to make up your Sunday contribution. Your financial support is the oil that helps to keep our parish lamps burning brightly! Best Wishes to Father Joseph Coda on his Birthday! Election Day is this Tuesday, Nov. 8

3 32 SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 6, 2011 When we stand before the minister of Holy Communion, we bow our head as a sign of our reverence for the presence of Christ in the Eucharist. The minister then says, The Body of Christ, The Blood of Christ. Those words proclaim that the consecrated bread and the consecrated wine are the living presence of Jesus Christ. God gives himself to us, so that we might be united with him. SPECIAL SERIES ON THE MASS This is the sixth of a series of articles designed to help us grow in our appreciation of the Mass, and to help us prepare for the coming changes in the liturgy. Previous articles may be found on our parish website (sjcnj.org) under bulletins. PART SIX: COMMUNION & SENDING If someone, who knew nothing of the Catholic faith and did not understand English were to come into church and watch the celebration of Mass, that person would conclude that we care a great deal about eating and drinking. The person would notice a table, the altar, occupying the central location in the building. The person would see bread and wine being carried to that table and being handled with respect and reverence. The person would see cups for wine and plates for bread. The person would watch people coming forward with hands outstretched to get something to eat and to drink Those words also proclaim that we too are the Body and Blood of Christ. As Saint Augustine said, we are what we receive. We are the body of Christ, the blood of Christ, we are the presence of the Lord in our world. By our Amen we affirm our belief in the Eucharist and we renew our Baptism, the sacrament that made us part of the Church, part of the Body of Christ. As we receive Communion, we should take advantage of the privilege to receive not only the host, but also the consecrated wine. By doing so, Communion stands out more clearly as a holy meal at which we eat and drink. We also respond to Christ s own invitation to take and eat to take and drink. The Communion Rite, the part of the Mass that we are considering, involves eating and drinking. In this part of the Mass, God returns the gifts of bread and wine that we brought forward earlier in the liturgy. But now, those gifts are consecrated. They are transformed into God s Living Presence. They are infused with God's life. In the silence that follows Communion, we express our personal thanks to God for the Eucharist. We also reflect on the fact that by sharing the one bread and one cup, we become one holy communion with God and with one another. The Communion Rite of Mass begins with the Lord s Prayer. In that prayer we ask our heavenly Father for our daily bread." The bread that we need to survive from day to day, and the bread that will bring us to everlasting life tomorrow. This time of silence ends as the priest prays the "Prayer After Communion." He asks that the Body and Blood of Christ that we have received may help us live as faithful Christians so that one day we may have a place of joy at God s heavenly table. We also ask our Father to forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. We seek forgiveness for our sins and the grace to forgive those who have sinned against us. For how can we welcome God into our life, if we are in sin? How can we become one holy communion with our brothers and sisters if we are holding anger or hatred in our heart? If Holy Communion is to be brought to the sick and homebound, the Special Ministers of Communion who will bring the Eucharist to those people, are sent forth at this time. After they have left, there is an opportunity for parish announcements. While the family of God is gathered, we share important "family news." The sharing of the sign of peace then follows. This is not a greeting but rather it a prayerful gesture by which we pledge that the Lord s gift of peace and reconciliation will flow through us out to others. The priest then blesses us and sends us to love and serve the Lord. We sing a final hymn of praise and then we go forth to imitate Christ s example of love and service in our daily life. We have heard Christ speak in his word. We have shared his life the Eucharist. Now we go out to bring him to the world. If we truly do what we are sent forth to do, the world is changed for the better. We then sing the The Lamb of God as the consecrated bread and wine are prepared for distribution to the people. When all is ready, the priest invites us to come forward to receive the Body and Blood of Christ. Starting Sunday, November 27, that invitation will sound like this Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes way the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Yes, we as Christians are concerned about what we eat and drink. We are especially concerned with the holy food and drink that make us one with God and one with our fellow Christians. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. As we process to the altar, we show unity as we sing the words of the Communion Song. Singing together at this moment reminds us that we are one in the Lord Rev. Thomas B. Iwanowski 3

4 ST. JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS REMINDER FOR THIS WEEK TUESDAY NOVEMBER 8 NO CLASSES WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 9 NO CLASSES TARGET NEWS TARGET, our high school youth program for those in grades 9 through 12, sponsors a Hang Out Night that takes place each Thursday from 7 to 9 pm in the TARGET Room located in the rectory basement. They can save your life! A reminder from the members of Girl Scout Troop #1473 OUR BAPTISM PROGRAM We have a new parish baptism program. Its primary purpose is not so much to prepare parents to celebrate the day when the waters of baptism will be poured over their child, but rather to help parents reflect on the meaning of their own baptism and the Catholic Faith they wish to share with their child. Our baptism program has several components or gatherings. These gatherings are led by members of our parish who are excited to share their faith and the joys of parenthood with new Moms & Dads. Those who wish to have their children baptized at our parish should contact the parish office well before the fifth month of pregnancy so they can take part in the gatherings before the actual baptism. Please contact the parish office / rectory for more information, our program schedule, and registration forms. ( ) or (office@sjcnj.org). We are happy to announce that the Sacrament of Baptism will be celebrated during our 5 pm Mass Saturday, November 12 & 19, and during our Noon Mass, Sunday, November 20. I was not disappointed! Just one of the many wonderful things about Cornerstone is that no matter what our age, occupation or background, we are all brothers in Christ and come together because of that common purpose. We are individuals who share a call to be true disciples of Jesus Christ. My own spirituality has been enriched by my involvement with Cornerstone. This experience has called me to greater goodness and service, a deeper faith and the opportunity to become more involved in our parish ministries. My hope is to give back, even in a small way, the many blessings I receive from being a part of Saint Joseph Cornerstone community. I always felt connected with the church. Cornerstone and my Cornerstone brothers help to strengthen that faith on my life's journey with Jesus Christ. A FUNDRAISER FOR RESURRECTION SCHOOL HONORS SAINT JOSEPH PARISH The Tenth Annual Harvest Festival fundraiser for Resurrection School in Jersey City will be held Thursday, November 17, at 6 pm at the Casino in the Park located in Lincoln Park, Jersey City, NJ. 6 ST. JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from Saint Matthew, Chapter 25 verses 1 to 13. Jesus tells us a story about ten virgins who were bridesmaids at a wedding. Together they were going to meet the bridegroom. Five girls were wise and brought extra oil in oil jars to refill their lamps. The other five girls were foolish and did not bring extra oil The bridegroom was late and all the bridesmaids fell asleep. When the bridegroom arrived, the wise bridesmaids refilled their lamps with the extra oil. They lighted them and went to meet him. The other five girls, who did not have extra oil, were not ready. The door was locked and they were not allowed into the celebration. Jesus tells us this story so that we will be ready for him when he comes to us. If your heart is empty and dark without love, Jesus will not take you to heaven to be with him forever. But if you have love for God and others, Jesus will bring you into heaven to be happy with him forever! 6 NOTE TO PARENTS The Liturgy of the Word with Children takes place at our 9am Sunday Mass. During that Mass the younger children are sent forth just before the First Reading and go to the lower church/ Mary s Chapel for their own celebration of God's Word. The readings, homily, songs and prayers are geared to their understanding. The children return before the presentation of the gifts to continue the celebration of the Liturgy with their families. We want God's Good News to be exciting for the younger members of our parish family. You can contact us at (kids@sjcnj.org) NOTE TO KIDS Be sure to use your special envelopes in the Sunday collection. You can get extra envelopes during the Liturgy of the Word with Children COMING NEXT WEEK Jesus tells us to use gifts God gives us! Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word with Children Committee
