God has likewise entrusted us not only with money, but also with time, talents, family, and friends, and even more wonderfully God has given us the gift of faith so we might know Him and have a place in His Church. As faithful servants of God we are to support that Church with our financial offerings and with our involvement in parish activities and ministries. God has entrusted his Church to our care. ARCHBISHOP S ANNUAL APPEAL MAKING A DIFFERENCE Catholic Charities Emergency Food and Nutrition Network coordinates bulk food collection and distribution through a network of 75 parish-based food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters in the Archdiocese of Newark. Last year, the network served over 40,000 people from 241,000 pounds of donated food. 3 33 SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 13, 2011 THE NEW ROMAN MISSAL, HOMILY ONE Last Sunday, November 6, the following homily was preached at our Masses and in many parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Newark. This is the first of four homilies the Office of Divine Worship has suggested be delivered to help us prepare for the Third Edition of the Roman Missal. Most people count down the shopping days until Christmas. But some count the shopping days until the start of Advent in late November. Those folks try to get their Christmas shopping done before Advent. They want Advent to be a time of peaceful reflection as they prepare to celebrate the day when God was born among his people. Those who count the days before Advent, are like the five wise virgins of the Gospel. They knew the bridegroom was coming and they got ready to meet him. They came not only with their lamps but also with flasks of oil so their lamps would burn brightly when he arrived. They were not like the five foolish virgins who came with insufficient oil for their lamps. When the bridegroom's coming was announced, those five ran off to buy oil at the last minute. When they returned, they were too late. The doors were locked, and they were left standing outside, looking in. They were unprepared. By now, all Catholics should know that something is coming on Sunday, November 27. Yes, Advent and the start of the new Church Year of But something else is coming. On that day, Catholics at Mass will hear English words and phrases that will sound unfamiliar. They will read words and phrases that they have not seen before in their worship aids. That change is coming as surely as the bridegroom in the Gospel. Rather than be like those who were not prepared for his arrival, here at our parish, we have been following the example of the wise women who were ready to welcome him. Over the past months, there have been several articles in the bulletin, and in our worship aid, about the coming changes. We also have been learning new musical pieces that were composed to include the wording of the new translation. For the next few Sundays we will more closely consider the change in wording that will take place. We want to be well prepared for November 27. Let's begin at the beginning. The prayers of the Mass are first published in the Latin. That s the official language of the Roman Catholic Church. The prayers are then translated and published in English, and in all the other languages used by Catholics throughout the world. These prayers of the Mass are found in a book called the Roman Missal. When the Mass was revised after the Second Vatican Council in the 1960 s a new Roman Missal was published in Latin and then translated into English. A 3 slightly revised version was published in 1985, that is the translation that we are currently using today. In the year 2000, a new, third edition of the Roman Missal, was published in Latin. We will start using the English translation of that third version of the Roman Missal this Advent. Two things make this English edition different from the one we are now using. First, this edition of the Roman Missal contains additional prayers. And second, and much more importantly, this edition is translated differently. The earlier editions were translated following a principle called DYNAMIC EQUIVALENCE. This means the translators were interested in translating concepts and ideas, and not just words. The translators were trying to put a thought expressed in Latin words into English words that would convey the same idea. They were not translating word for word. However, some ten years ago, Pope John Paul II, said liturgical translators should now aim for a more literal translation. They should use a method of translation called FORMAL EQUIVALENCE. This requires a more word for word style of translation, and one that respects word order and sentence structure. The document issued by Pope John Paul II also called for a more formal style of language and one that respects references to phrases found in the Bible. Here is an example of what this means. Currently when the priest says, "The Lord be with you." You respond by saying "And also with you." Your response is a based on the Latin that says "Et cum spiritu tuo," which literally means, "And with your spirit." The earlier translators, using Dynamic Equivalence, translated that phrase, "and also with you." Beginning November 27, following Formal Equivalence, we will say "And with your spirit." That translation is more literal. While some of your other responses will be different with this new principle of translation; the change will be most noticeable as you listen to the words prayed by the priest. The wording will be more formal, the sentences will be longer, and the grammatical constructions a little more complicated. Like any change, the coming revisions in the Mass may make us uncomfortable until we become familiar with them. This new translation of the Mass will require us to be more attentive to what we hear and to look more carefully at words that we often say with little thought because we have heard them so many times before. As wise Catholics, may we be ready to welcome this translation of the Missal with enlightened minds and hearts. Like the wise virgins, may our lamps be burning brightly! 2011 Rev. Thomas B. Below are some examples of the new wording. Parts in bold indicate change from the present text. GREETING Priest: The Lord be with you People And with your spirit. GLORIA Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, In the glory of God the Father. Amen. WOMEN S CORNERSTONE MEETING If you've made Cornerstone Retreat, we invite you to join us this Wednesday evening at 8 pm at the K of C Hall on River Road in New Milford, for our November preparation meeting for Cornerstone XX. Our Cornerstone weekend will be held on March 2 & 3, 2012 and we are enthusiastically praying and preparing. All of our Team assignments and those who have said "yes" to doing them, will be announced at this meeting. If you have made Cornerstone, and, maybe you haven't been able to attend our meetings, we still invite you to this meeting. You will be invited to join one of the teams who needs additional help. Of course, we will also have our prayer and sharing time and fellowship time with goodies prepared by a few of our ladies. So, plan to attend as we move toward our wonderful weekend. Also, we will be giving additional thanks to our Lord during this Thanksgiving Season, for all the good things he has given to us. We hope to see you Wednesday Night - 8 p.m. K of C. TARGET NEWS Our Thanksgiving Food Drive will take place next weekend, November 19 & 20. As a reminder, please take home a grocery bag as you leave Church today. Help someone in need by bringing your donations to the Rectory Garage before or after Mass next weekend. During this Food Drive we gratefully accept turkeys. Your generosity will certainly be appreciated. The donations will go to the Food Pantry at Ascension Church in New Milford and to Resurrection Parish, our Sister Parish, in Jersey City. TARGET, our high school youth program for those in grades 9 through 12, sponsors a Hang Out Night that takes place each Thursday from 7 to 9 pm in the TARGET Room located in the rectory basement OUR BAPTISM PROGRAM We have a new parish baptism program consisting of several components or gatherings. These gatherings are led by members of our parish who are excited to share their faith and the joys of parenthood with new Moms & Dads. SENIOR CITIZEN THANKSGIVING DINNER HOSTED BY IHA & BERGEN CATHOLIC HS CHILDCARE ON SUNDAY DURING MASS The Good News for Little Ones program, for children 6 months through 4 years of age, provides a safe and comfortable environment for children while their parents attend our 9 am or 10:30 am Sunday Mass. Good News for Little Ones takes place in the greenhouse classroom located in the Saint Joseph Lower School on Elm Street. Immaculate Heart Academy High School and Bergen Catholic High School students are hosting the Third Annual Thanksgiving Dinner for local senior citizens. This free event will be on Tuesday-November 22 from 5 to 7 pm at Immaculate Heart Academy, 500 Van Emburgh Avenue in Washington Township. SHAWL MINISTRY The Shawl Ministry of Saint Joseph Parish will hold their monthly meeting this Tuesday-November 15, from 2 to 4 pm, in the rectory basement meeting room. 6 ST. JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from St. Matthew Chapter 25 verses 14 to 30. In today s reading Jesus tells us that God gives us all different gifts and talents. He tells us that we can choose to waste the time, money and the special talents that God gives us. We can also be selfish with those gifts. But when we use our time, money and our special gifts to spread the good news of Jesus, God is pleased and he fills our hearts with joy. NOTE TO PARENTS The Liturgy of the Word with Children takes place at our 9am Sunday Mass. During that Mass the younger children are sent forth just before the First Reading and go to the lower church/ Mary s Chapel for their own celebration of God's Word. The readings, homily, songs and prayers are geared to their understanding. The children return before the presentation of the gifts to continue the celebration of the Liturgy with their families. We want God's Good News to be exciting for the younger members of our parish family.
