3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Len Lesser was a comic actor with a hawk-bill nose and a heavy New York City accent who played Uncle Leo on Jerry Seinfeld s TV show, where he always seemed to be barging in to chew Jerry s ear off with stories about the triumphs of his son Jeffrey, a Parks Department worker. In a famous episode, Uncle Leo finds a watch Jerry has discarded into a trash can but then wants to buy back and Leo refuses to sell it to him. In a 2010 interview with the Canadian newspaper The National Post, Lesser spoke of the fame his role brought him. I was at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, watching people put notes in the wall. It s an esoteric day, very silent, very nice. All of a sudden: Uncle Leo, where s the watch? The Western (or Wailing ) Wall is all that remains of the immense Temple complex, the most remarkable of Herod the Great s impressive construction projects, one of antiquity s paramount building achievements. Herod had an entire hillside enlarged to contain its enclosure of approximately 30 acres, an area twice the size of Rome s famous forum. The largest surviving limestone retaining-wall block for the hill is forty feet long and weighs a massive one hundred tons. THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT ~ MARCH 8, 2015 Fr. Roy at the Wailing Wall during his recent pilgrimage to the Holy Land. The Temple itself, which included the Holy of Holies (where the High Priest alone could enter, and only on the Day of Atonement) was a much smaller building, because Herod could not deviate from the measurements of the original Temple King Solomon had built centuries before. Outside of it was the altar where the priests carried out sacrifices of different kinds. People approached the Temple from a vast plaza, where even Gentiles were allowed to be present. But then the space became compartmentalized, and only Jews could enter the two areas closest to the Temple. (Museums display two surviving signs that warned Gentiles they would be executed if they were caught inside these forbidden zones. One even has letters painted red to further reinforce its warning.) The first of the Jewish precincts was called the Court of the Women, because they were not allowed to pass through to the space immediately in front of the Temple. The money changers and the sellers of animals conducted their business in the large Court of the Gentiles. Both were necessary to Temple worship. The 3 Temple tax could only be paid with one kind of coinage, and the far-flung assembly of worshipers for the great pilgrimage feasts had money from different parts of the Roman Empire. And visitors from a distance couldn t easily bring any sizable animals with them to present as sacrifices and, besides, there were inspectors on duty to certify that the victims people brought were good enough to offer to God, so who wanted to take a chance that an animal from far away wouldn t qualify! All four Gospels recount Jesus s cleansing of the Temple. Only John situates it near the beginning of his ministry, while the other accounts place it shortly before his death. Biblical commentators have explained the incident in various ways. Some have seen Jesus as being incensed by the unseemliness and racket of such commercial pursuits so close to a hallowed place. Others have speculated that some merchants might have been taking advantage of poorer worshipers by charging them excessively. And still others have suggested that Jesus was declaring himself to be the promised Messiah through a powerful symbolic action, recalling, perhaps, a passage from the prophet Malachi: Lo, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me; And suddenly there will come to the temple the Lord whom you seek, And the messenger of the covenant whom you desire. Yes, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. But who will endure the day of his coming? And who can stand when he appears? For he is like the refiner s fire, or like the fuller s lye. He will sit refining and purifying (silver), and he will purify the sons of Levi, Refining them like gold or like silver that they may offer due sacrifice to the Lord. Then the sacrifice of Judah and Jerusalem will please the Lord, as in days of old, as in years gone by. (Mal 3, 1-4) Such a Messianic proclamation would also explain why John might have relocated the incident in his relating of the life of Jesus: he was emphasizing the Lord s true identity by describing an important action right after telling us of Jesus s first miracle, when he changed water into wine at Cana, something that also implied that he was the Promised One. Since John s Gospel sometimes likes to offer us layers of meaning in a single passage (like the good things put together in a Black Forest Cake), it may be that all these possible interpretations are present in today s Gospel selection. GIRL SCOUTS CELEBRATE AT SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH More than 225 parishioners gathered last Saturday in the Saint Joseph School gym to feast on delicious, tender slices of beef served by Nightingale s, the area s premier beefsteak banquet company, and to bask in the warmth of one another s company. In addition to the terrific music by our own Peter Greco, the room, filled to capacity, was abuzz with the sounds of happy chatter and lots of folks licking their lips! If you were unable to join us, we hope you will plan to come next year. You won t be sorry! We collected over $10,000 in donations for our 50/50 raffle. The names of the lucky winners were called at the dinner and will be announced in next week s bulletin. Local Girl Scouts are attending the 9:00 am Mass today in honor of Girl Scout Sunday which begins the annual weeklong celebration known as Girl Scout Week. On March 12 the Girl Scout organization in the United States celebrates its 103rd birthday. Today there are 2.8 million Girl Scouts in the USA (2 million girl members and 800,000 adult members working primarily as volunteers). There are over 300 girls involved in 38 troops from the Oradell Girl Scout organization which is comprised of troops from the public schools, Saint Joseph School and the Catholic high schools. Girl Scout Sunday Mass has been celebrated at our church for more than 25 years. A PRAYER FOR THE GIRL SCOUTS Dear Jesus, We ask you to bless these Girl Scouts. Give them grace to serve you and our country and to keep the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Make them humble and friendly, eager for adventure, alert and prepared for service. Give them the courage to dare to do right; make them both strong to fight and steadfast to endure; and may their lives be filled with joy that spreads happiness everywhere. Amen. DON T MISS OUR LENTEN PARISH MISSION --MARCH Father John Gordon, popular conference speaker, retreat director and former parochial vicar at Visitation Parish, will present a special two-day Lenten mission at Saint Joseph Church in Oradell. The mission will feature Saint Joseph as Family Man for Jesus and Mary and for the Universal Church. Through Fr. Gordon s presentations, we will learn how Joseph can lead us to make Jesus the focus of our own family life as well as that of our lives as Catholic Christians. In addition, Fr. Gordon will explore the role of Saint Joseph in the goals of the World Meeting of Families which will be held in Philadelphia this September and which will include a visit from Pope Francis. Fr. Gordon will speak at Saint Joseph Church, on Monday, March 16 and Tuesday, March 17 at 7:30 pm. A free will offering will be gratefully accepted. 5 TWO SAINT JOSEPH PARISHIONERS RECEIVE APPOINTMENTS TO WEST POINT We extend our congratulations to Michael McPherson and Brigid Tracy who have received appointments to the United States Military Academy at West Point. As the Cadet Prayer says, may God encourage them in their endeavor to live above the common level of life. Make them to choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong...and endow them with courage that is born of loyalty to all that is noble and worthy. Michael (Saint Joseph School Class of 2010) is currently a Freshman in the ROTC program at Fordham University. While Michael was already on the path to achieve his goal of becoming an officer in the United States Army, it was his dream to attend West Point. Michael continued to dedicate himself to his studies; to his fitness training; and to honing his leadership skills. His perseverance was successful and he received nominations from both Congressman Garrett and from the ROTC and then an appointment to the US Military Academy at West Point Class of Brigid is currently a Senior at River Dell High School. Brigid had hoped to attend the US Military Academy since she was in middle school. As a member of the River Dell Girls soccer team her greatest dream was not only to attend but to also play soccer for Army. Setting her goals early in life gave her focus in both academics and athletics. Brigid will be fulfilling both her dreams as a member of the United States Military Academy at West Point Class of 2019 and is looking forward to the challenges that lay ahead. The mystery play calls for no speaking parts. Through special lighting, a moving soundtrack, and reflective meditations, viewers experience Jesus' life and presence as if it were really happening. The play becomes a powerful vehicle for God's spirit to forgive, renew, and especially heal. At the end of each presentation, there is an opportunity for individual prayers for healing. The play will be presented on Sunday, March 22 at 8:00 pm at Immaculate Conception Church, 211 Summit Street, Norwood, NJ. SHROUD OF TURIN AT ST. ANTHONY ORTHODOX CHURCH MARCH 15 A program on the Shroud of Turin, the 14-foot linen cloth that bears the faint front and back image of a bearded, crucified man with apparent wounds and bloodstains that match the crucifixion account as recorded in the Bible, will be presented at St. Anthony Orthodox Church, 385 Ivy Lane, Bergenfield, NJ at 7:00 pm on Sunday, March 15, by international expert Russ Brealt, who has been featured in documentaries on CBS, the History Channel and Discovery.
