3 OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE ~ NOVEMBER 20, 2016 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Our parish s Mass for Thanksgiving Day will be celebrated at. It is our only Mass on the holiday. Thanksgiving Day has become America s preeminent secular holiday. Our parish staff wishes you a very delightful time at all of your gatherings of family and friends. Of course, the values this day highlights are ones that are central to our faith. To be reminded of this, we have only to look at how we were taught to pray from our young days, when we were told that prayer is meant to ask for favors for ourselves and for others, to beg God s pardon for our sins, to praise the Lord for his awesome greatness, and to thank Him for all the good things He has given us. Some years ago I came across a beautiful prayer by that well-known author Anonymous. Like so many other prayers people will use to express their gratitude on Thanksgiving Day, it ranges far although no one s words can ever be comprehensive enough for the great obligation of being thankful to God, whose love and good works are so vast and so constantly present in our lives. The prayer goes like this: Thank You, Father, for the wonderful gift of life that You have seen fit to share with us. Thank You for all the happy days of childhood, for all the games and friends. Thank You for the excitement of learning and for the knowledge of this earth. Thank You for the strength of mature years, for the work that we did, the places we saw, the people we helped. Thank You for opening our hearts to love for the special people who loved us, and for surrounding us with our families and Yours. Thank You for letting us live in exciting days. Give Your blessing to all our acts, past and present, that they may lead to a happier world when we are gone. Thank You, Father, for pain, for suffering, for tears, for laughter, for the air, the rain, the sky, and the earth. Thank You for the lives we have lived and for the life we will live in heaven with You forever. Amen. Thanksgiving is also, as all times ought to be, an occasion for believers to grow in charity. Our food drive is taking place during the hours of our Saturday evening and Sunday Masses this weekend. The items our Social Concerns volunteers have requested may be dropped off at the rectory garage. Turkeys may also e brought there as late as Monday morning before 9:30. Because of your generosity to this drive many people will experience a more enjoyable holiday. Msgr. On this, our national day of Thanksgiving, we turn all our thoughts to you, from whom all blessings flow. Bless all our work, our friends, and our families both near and far. We humbly ask for the ability to continue our work for your kingdom and the ability to gather freely to worship you without fear. We ask you to give our years ahead your blessing and protection. INTERFAITH THANKSGIVING PRAYER SERVICE NOVEMBER 20 The annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Prayer Service will be held this year on Sunday, November 20 at 4:00 pm at Grace Lutheran Church (925 Fifth Avenue, River Edge). Saint Joseph will join Grace Lutheran and neighboring houses of worship to offer thanks to God for all our blessings. Help represent Saint Joseph at this beautiful prayer service that has become a very special tradition in our community. CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT THIS WEEKEND The collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) provides funding for groups that make lasting change and uplift the poor in the United States. CCHD s grants improve education, support economic development, and create affordable housing in lowincome neighborhoods. Help us continue to defend human dignity and build communities of solidarity. Your generous donations will bless those in need of the Food Pantries at the Church of the Ascension in New Milford and our Brother/Sister Parish of St. Joseph in Jersey City. SAVE THIS DATE FOR BEAUTIFUL MUSIC JANUARY 8 Please mark your calendars for Saint Joseph Church's extremely popular annual Christmas concert "An Afternoon of Christmas Joy. The concert will take place on Sunday, January 8 at 3:00 PM. It will feature the Adult and Children's Choirs as well as soloists and instrumentalists who are a part of the Music Ministry at Saint Joseph Church. A CHRISTMAS GIFT TO REMEMBER Looking for a special gift? Or a way to remember a loved one? Or something to record a special event (birth, Baptism, First Communion, Marriage) in the life of YOUR LOVED ONE S NAME your family? A personalized engraved paver placed in our Commemorative Path (beside the church) or in our Garden of Saints (behind the parish office/rectory) may be just the answer. In the Garden we have shrines to Saints Francis of Assisi, Anthony of Padua, Joseph, Therese the Little Flower, and Jude. (We hope to include Saint Patrick in the near future.) Your brick can be placed in front of the saint of your choice. The donation for each brick is $125. Pick up an order form in the literature racks in the church or in the parish office/rectory and return it to 105 Harrison St., New Milford. Engraved bricks will be installed in the spring. Any questions, call TAKE A TAG SHARE THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS What better way to prepare our homes and hearts for Christmas than to share the blessings and joys of that holy season with those in need. Our Giving Trees, an Advent tradition at Saint Joseph Parish, will be placed in the main entrance of the Church and at the Harrison Street entrance on November 23. Please take a tag from the Giving Tree, purchase the requested gift and then place the wrapped gift, with tag attached, under the tree the next time you come to Mass. The tag you take from the tree is very important. It tells our office staff and the agencies we are helping for whom the gift is meant. It is extremely important that the tag you took from the Giving Tree be attached securely to the wrapped gift so that it will reach the correct person on Christmas. Pope Francis will preside at the closing rites (and the closing of the Holy Door) at Saint Peter's Basilica. His Grace, Archbishop Myers will preside at the noon Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark. At the conclusion of the Mass, to mark the end of the Jubilee Year, all will join in an acclamation of praise and honor to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The St. Joseph Knights of Columbus Council #3814 welcomes you to our annual Christmas party at the Council Hall, 199 River Road, New Milford on Friday, December 2 from 7:30 9:30 pm. Admission is FREE, but the Knights would appreciate it if all guests would bring a donation of an unwrapped toy (for a tot) and/or non-perishable food items. Food and a cash bar will be provided. Yes, it's nearing that time of the year...the time when we gather to celebrate our Savior's birth! We invite you to join in the celebration at our Christmas Party to be held on December 5, beginning at 7:30 pm. Our party will be held in the Knights of Columbus Hall at 199 River Road in New Milford. You are invited to bring your spouse even if he/she has not yet made Cornerstone. This is a great chance for them to get to know us. A wonderful celebration is being planned, with music, games, good food and some other surprises. 6 MASS OF INSTALLATION OF NEW ARCHBISHOP JANUARY 6, 2017 On Friday, January 6, at 2:30 pm, the Mass of Installation of the new Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Newark, Cardinal-elect Joseph T. Tobin, will be celebrated in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, 89 Ridge Street, Newark, NJ. The general, open seating will be on a 'first come' basis, with the Cathedral Basilica opening at approximately 11:00 a.m. Given the potential for 'winter weather,' parking will be extremely limited. Those planning to participate may wish to arrange for carpooling to the Cathedral Basilica. IN MEMORIAM JEFF HARM CATHOLIC WAR VETERANS The day before Veterans Day, Saint Joseph Parish lost one of our own cherished veterans. Jeff Harm, who served as Captain in the Army Signal Corps during the Vietnam War and was a dedicated member of the Father Washington Post 1710 of the Catholic War Veterans, passed away on November 10. As Post Commander, Kurt Strobach, who worked closely with Jeff, tells us, Jeff had a passion to help fellow veterans who have special needs and disabilities and to assist those who need daily care in the Veterans Home in Paramus. Jeff served as First Vice Commander of the CWV and volunteered to be involved in the Cross of Peace program for the last three years, which raises funds for service, welfare and hospital activities performed by the post. Jeff repeatedly expressed his gratitude to Saint Joseph parishioners for their generosity to these programs. He also served as the post Officer of the Day and his enthusiasm and energy were infectious. As Kurt tells us, Jeff s works of mercy, kindness and compassion were hallmarks of his character. His volunteerism brought the Gospel alive for me as well as for others. Jeff epitomized the Catholic War Veterans slogan: For God, For Country, For Family. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and may he rest in peace. Amen. DONATE YOUR OLD EYEGLASSES Help the Knights of Columbus give the gift of sight to those in need by donating your old prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses and your overthe-counter reading glasses. A collection box will be at the back of both the upper and lower churches during the month of November. (Glasses with broken frames are also accepted.) SOCIAL CONCERNS BINGO & BASKETS APRIL 27, 2017 The Bingo and Basket fundraiser for our Brother/Sister Parish, St. Joseph in Jersey City, will take place on Thursday evening, April 27 in the Saint Joseph Lower School Gymnasium. The doors will open at 6:00 pm and bingo will begin at 7:00 pm. Prizes will include gorgeous designer handbags. There will also be a Tricky Tray, Door Prizes and a 50/50 Raffle. Watch this bulletin to find out when tickets will be available for purchase. Be sure to save this date for an amazing night out! SUPPLEMENTING RETIREMENT WITH A PLANNED GIFT Are you nearing retirement or are already retired and are looking to make a year-end gift? As we all know, one way to give thanks is by giving. Just as the Lord has given so many blessings, this is an ideal time to give away any unwanted clothing or small household items to the Catholic Charities donation bin in our rectory parking lot (at 105 Harrison St., New Milford). Catholic Charities will report in January on the amount of money generated from the bin.
