Make your hearts firm, because the coming of the Lord is at hand. JAMES 5:8 Patience is another one of those things many of us struggle with. We want things to go according to our plan and our schedule. Any change brings anxiety and fear. Through daily prayer we better align ourselves with God s will and His plan, which is far better than anything we can come up with on our own. HELP US DECORATE FOR CHRISTMAS! Volunteers are needed to help us decorate Saint Joseph Church for the celebration of Our Lord s birth. Helpers are needed on Sunday, December 18 at 2:00 pm to prepare the sanctuaries in both the Upper Church and Mary s Chapel and to set up our Nativity scenes and other decorations. Volunteers are also welcome on Friday, December 23 at 9:15 am to arrange our Christmas flowers, set up the altar in the school gym for our third Christmas Eve Mass, and to put the final touches to everything. 3 THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT ~ DECEMBER 11, 2016 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK JOINT ADVENT PENANCE SERVICE THIS MONDAY, DECEMBER 12 When the comedian Bob Newhart, a faithfully practicing Catholic, was invited to give the graduation address at Catholic University in Washington, he offered some humorous advice on going to confession during football season. This year s Advent Penance Service for both Saint Joseph and St. Peter the Apostle Parishes will be held at St. Peter s Church, 445 Fifth Avenue, River Edge, NJ on Monday, December 12 at 7:30 pm. The clergy of both Saint Joseph Parish and St. Peter s Parishes will be available to hear confessions. Growing up in Chicago, the best time to go to confession was during the Notre Dame-SMU game. You could tell that priest anything I just killed my family Well, don t do it again, my son and you could hear the game on in the background. Visit us on our websites: CHURCH: sjcnj.org SCHOOL: sjsusa.org RELIGIOUS ED.: sjcnjre.org I knew a priest who was a big Notre Dame fan and used to take one of those little radios with the ear-buds into his confessional if the Fighting Irish were playing at the time and disconnect it when penitents showed up. But, of course, the Sacrament of Penance is serious business, as Bob Newhart knows very well, and as Pope Francis has often said. By the 1590s, the Holy Father s Jesuit predecessors offered confession to pilgrims to Rome s St. Peter s Basilica in twenty-seven languages. Although the priests of St. Joseph s and St. Peter s in River Edge will not be able to match that linguistic convenience, we will be hearing confessions at our parishes combined Advent communal Penance service, which will take place this Monday at St. Peter s at 7:30 pm. After prayers and a homily, there will be an examination of conscience followed by individual confessions until everyone has been heard. Our own parish will also offer additional opportunities, beyond our usual Saturday schedule, to benefit from the sacrament. Our priests will all be hearing confessions next Saturday at the usual 4:00-5:00 pm time. And we will also be available after our daily Masses of the following week, up to and including the Mass of December 24, which will be the last scheduled opportunity to receive the sacrament. (There will be no confessions from 4:005:00 on Christmas Eve, because the priests have to get ready for the three 5:00 pm Masses we will offer.) Jean Vanier, who is renowned for the work he has done in creating the L Arche communities for disabled people, has enchantingly described confession as a meeting of love and as a renewal of friendship with God. I hope you will consider receiving this important sacrament as part of your spiritual preparation for Christmas. Msgr. David Hubba 3

4 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE DECEMBER 12, 2016 CHRISTMAS FLOWERS You are invited to make a donation in memory of a loved one or for a special intention toward the cost of decorating our worship spaces for the Christmas season. Please use the Flower Envelope that you will receive in the mail. (Extra envelopes are available in the parish office.) Please PRINT clearly on the envelope your intention, your name and phone number. Donation is $10 per name/family and payable to Saint Joseph Church. Your envelope can be put in the collection basket. On December 9, 1531, Our Lady appeared to a simple Aztec Indian who had converted to the Catholic faith, Juan Diego. Three days later, at Juan Diego's request, Mary provided a sign so the local bishop would believe that she actually had appeared. Roses grew out of the cold winter soil, and when Juan Diego opened his cloak to show the bishop what he had found, an image of Our Lady appeared on the fabric. These occurrences led to the conversion of most of Mexico and remain today a strong sign of Our Lady's concern and love for us. Church-approved Marian apparitions always point to her Son, Jesus. For many of us with a strong Marian devotion, Mary is a pathway into a stronger relationship with our Lord. Her generosity shown to Juan Diego is the same generosity shown to each of us that choose to ask her intercession. Families pray for one another and she is a very prominent member of our family. May the miracle of Our Lady of Guadalupe be a sign of warmth for you in the cold of winter and of Advent hope for a Christ Child that has redeemed the world. All are most welcome! Focusing upon the topics of Carrying the Cross and Keeping Christmas Well, he will suggest that affliction and suffering can be the ultimate instruments of joy, transformative grace, and redemption and that truly living in the spirit of Christmas requires journeying deep within and giving of oneself without. If you are challenged and/or struggling with suffering of any kind be it mental, emotional or physical or if you are simply interested in going deeper this Advent, please consider coming. You will not be disappointed. PRAYER TO OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE Our Lady of Guadalupe, my mother, into your hands joined in prayer, take my prayers, petitions and hopes, and present them to Jesus for me. Remembering the love and care your hands rendered to Him, He will not refuse what they hold now, even though they are from me. Amen. The Youth Group is going to be making rosaries and writing letters to the service me and women for Christmas. THIS IS OPEN TO ALL STUDENTS FROM GRADES 7-12 (whether you ve attended a youth group meeting or not). We will be meeting after the 12:00 pm Mass, on Sunday, December 11, in the Parish Life Center. It was a "wonderfilled" evening of friendship, music and song spent in the warmth of our Parish Life Center and surrounded by the magnificent sounds of the All Star Trio. Many thanks as well to our generous donors, volunteers, and to everyone who participated in our 50/50 raffle. Cash prizes totaling $5,044 went to three lucky winners--all parishioners of Saint Joseph! Because of your generosity and support, homeless and refugee children in Ukraine will find comfort, love and safety in the Sisters of the Holy Eucharist Shelter. It was fitting that our delightful evening ended with our own Peter Greco leading us in the song "Let There Be Peace on Earth." Thank you for giving real meaning to the words of that beautiful hymn. Your kindness will make it possible for many children to have a future of hope and promise. Maryanne Olsen and Committee Our Giving Trees, an Advent tradition at Saint Joseph Parish, are located in the main entrance of the Church and at the Harrison Street entrance. Please take a tag from the Giving Tree, purchase the requested gift and then place the wrapped gift, with tag attached, under the tree the next time you come to Mass. The tag you take from the tree is very important. It tells our office staff and the agencies we are helping for whom the gift is meant. It is extremely important that the tag you took from the Giving Tree be attached securely to the wrapped gift so that it will reach the correct person on Christmas. All Giving Tree Gifts need to be returned no later than Thursday, December 15. SPECIAL MASS FOR THOSE AFFECTED BY ALCOHOLISM DECEMBER 17 IS SAINT JOSEPH ON YOUR GIFT LIST? 6 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT MIRACULOUS MEDAL NOVENA HELPING THOSE IN DESPERATE NEED Saint Joseph parishioner Sophia Mustard will be going on a Mission Trip to Rivere Friode, a small town in Haiti, from January She will be traveling with the Franciscan Friars and Sisters of the Renewal and the lay support group Friar Suppliers. The group will be working to build 45 houses and latrines (destroyed by Hurricane Matthew in October). Many people there have only a tent to live in. The group s medical team will treat as many as 2,000 people, giving medicine for high blood pressure (a big problem there), treating wounds and handing out vitamins to a community that is without even the barest necessities. Food is never in abundance and many people there only eat every three days! The group is hoping to be able to feed 1,500 families. Sophia is asking for our financial help. The cost to build a house is $600; a latrine costs $350. A 50 lb. bag of rice is $40; a bag of kidney beans of the same size is $75. Corn is relatively inexpensive ($25 for a 50 lb. bag), but grinders are needed. The group hopes to provide both manual grinders ($300 each) and electric grinders (at $1,500 each) to make cornmeal so that the children can have breakfast in their school. If you can help, please write your check, for whatever amount you can afford, to Friar Suppliers, put it in an envelope marked Mission Trip and drop it in the collection basket or at the rectory/parish office. Friar Suppliers is a 501c3 organization. 100% of your donation will go to help the people of Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere. Our Novena WILL take place at its regularly scheduled time (7:00 pm) on December 12 and December 19. The Novena will NOT be held on December 26 or January 2 due to the holidays. (The Novena prayers may be said at home.) The Novena will resume as a regular devotion of Saint Joseph Church on Monday, January 9.
