2 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ SAINT JOSEPH PARISH MINISTRIES "As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God's varied grace." 1 Pt 4:10 The Church s mission proclaiming and teaching, serving and sanctifying is our task too. It is the personal responsibility of each one of us as stewards of the Church. All members of the Church have their own roles to play in carrying out its mission. If you d like to find out how you can use your God-given talents in one of the following ministries, please call our parish secretary at or her at office@sjcnj.org She will put you in touch with the director of that ministry or volunteer opportunity. New members are greatly needed and most welcome! LITURGICAL MINISTRIES Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion assist in the distribution of the Body and Blood of Christ (consecreated bread and wine) at Mass and bring Holy Communion to the sick and homebound. Readers (lectors) proclaim the Scripture and announce the petitions of the Prayer of the Faithful at Mass. Altar Servers participate in processions and assist the priest on the altar during the celebration of Mass. Greeters/Ushers welcome the people, assist in the collection, guide the Communion procession and distribute bulletins. Music Ministers include an Adult and Children s Choir, parish cantors/leaders of song, and parish musicians. Children s Liturgy of the Word volunteers help to share the Word of God with the children of our parish at Sunday Mass. Art & Environment volunteers enhance the worship space by planning and maintaining seasonally appropriate decorations. Veronica s Veil is made up of volunteers who launder and maintain our altar linens. PARISH LEADERSHIP Parish Pastoral Council members assist the Pastor in evaluating parish programs and introducing new activities that reflect the parish s mission. Finance Council members advise the Pastor on financial matters and work to maintain the financial well-being of the parish. Fundraising Committee members work to enhance the parish s financial health and development by planning and Implementing fundraising activities. Buildings & Grounds committee members assist the Pastor and Facilities Director in the care and maintenance of parish property. Hospitality (Membership) volunteers provide fellowship opporutnities for parishioners. FAITH FORMATION FOR CHILDREN Religious Education & Sacrament Preparation: Volunteer catechists, classroom aides, and office assistants help to educate our youth in the Faith and prepare them to receive First Penance, First Communion and Confirmation. They may also assist at special retreats for both First Communion and Confirmation candidates. Children s Liturgy of the Word (see entry under Liturgical Ministries) FOR ADULTS R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Iniation of Adults): Volunteers work under the direction of the clergy in the formal process of preparing adults to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist. Bible Study: Volunteers lead small groups of parishioners who meet weekly to view instructional videos on the Bible and grow in their faith. Cornerstone Retreats: Volunteers help to plan and implement the annual parish-sponsored 26-hour retreats (one for Men and one for Women) that include talks, times of prayer and a chance to grow in one s relationship with the Lord. Legion of Mary: Members are involved in various religious activities that encourage discipleship through Mary including the praying of the rosary and a monthly reflection on the virtues of the Blessed Mother. Moment With Holy Mary: Members gather monthly to pray, to reflect on the Psalms and on other spiritual teachings. Ministry of Motherhood (M.O.M.): Mothers of all ages and stages gather monthly to share and to reflect, refresh and renew themselves and their Faith. (continued on next page.) 2

3 THIRTY SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ NOVEMBER 12, 2017 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK MORE SAINT JOSEPH MINISTRIES (continued from page 2) During the World War I era, the great Austrian poet Rainer M. Rilke was one of a number of writers and artists who were happy to accept the lavish hospitality of Princess Maria von Thun und Taxis-Hohenlohe, who owned the magnificent Duino Castle, which overlooked the Gulf of Trieste. The Princess, herself a talented pianist and literary translator, delighted in the company of artistic people and loved to have them as her guests. And the guests didn t at all mind being served breakfast in bed and, after having their mornings free to work on their current projects, partaking in a sumptuous lunch, followed by afternoon siestas and excursions and, often, by evening concerts. It was like staying at a world-class bed-and-breakfast free of charge. Rilke would dedicate his famous Duino Elegies to her. In one of his earlier works, Rilke masterfully captured the beauty and poignancy of Autumn: OUTREACH & SOCIAL CONCERNS Prayer Shawl Ministry: Members meet monthly to knit/crochet prayer shawls and blankets for those experiencing illness, confinement, bereavement. Bereavement Support: Eight-week sessions are offered for those dealing with the death of a loved one. Separated/Divorced Ministry: Twelve-week DVD/ discussion sessions are offered for those looking for comfort, counsel and clarity. Visitation of Sick Respect Life Activities Food Drives: Volunteers help to sort and distribute parishioner donations from three annual Food Drives. Christmas Giving Tree: Volunteers help with collecting donations, shopping and wrapping holiday gifts for needy families. Family Promise of NJ: Volunteers help to prepare meals for homeless families several times a year. New Hope for Children: Volunteers conduct fundraising activities to help refugee and homeless children. Our Lady of Fatima First Saturday Group Brother/Sister School Support: Volunteers conduct fundraisers to help support St. Joseph, Jersey City. Knights of Columbus (St. Joseph Council #3814): Fraternal support organization that supports Saint Joseph and Ascension parishes. Oh Lord, it s time. It was a great summer. Lay your shadow now on the sundials, and on the open fields let the winds go! Give the tardy fruits the hint to fill; give them two more Mediterranean days, drive them on into their greatness, and press the final sweetness into the heavy wine. Whoever has no house by now will not build. Whoever is alone now will remain alone, will wait up, read, write long letters, and walk along sidewalks under large trees, not going home, as the leaves fall and blow away. Once Fall settles in, we know that Thanksgiving will be with us very soon. For a number of years, the Riverdell clergy association has sponsored an interfaith Thanksgiving service. This year s will take place next Sunday, November 19, at 4:00 at the Reformed Church of Oradell (641 Church Street). We will pray together, hear and take part in delightful music provided by the member churches choirs (including our own, accompanied by Monroe Quinn), hear a sermon by Father Camilo Cruz of St. Peter s Church, and enjoy refreshments and fellowship. A number of our parishioners have made this service a part of their Thanksgiving season, and I hope many of you will be able to attend as we joyfully acclaim, in prayer and song, the great debt of gratitude we owe to God. YOUTH Junior Altar Servers: Open to students in both Saint Joseph School and public school in grades 5-8. Children s Choir: Open to students in grades 3-8. Youth Group: Adult volunteers work with our parish youth in grades Saint Joseph Athletic Association: Adult coaching opportunities in basketball, track and cheerleading programs for children in grades 3-8. 4 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ SHAWL MINISTRY MEETING NOVEMBER 14 Saint Joseph s Shawl Ministry will meet on Tuesday, November 14 from 2:004:00 pm in the Parish Life Center on Grove Street. All knitters & crocheters are welcome to join us in making shawls or bring your current yarn project and spend a relaxing afternoon with us. Our ministry has shawls available for those experiencing illness, confinement, bereavement, or other situation. ONLINE BIBLE SURVEY Pope Francis has called on Christians to consult the Bible with the same frequency as they might consult their cellphones for messages. What would happen if we read the message of God contained in the Bible the way we read messages on our cellphones? Please take the time to respond to a brief online survey on the Bible and help us better understand the interest and need of our parish communities with respect to the Bible. Contact Yvonne Obzejta at YOUTH GROUP UPDATE Youth Minister Donna Cirino reports that our Confirmation Retreat team held a retreat for 7th grade students on Friday, November 3. It was a big success and a lot of fun. Donna would like to thank Tom Cenicola for making us the Buddy walkers we used for the ice breakers. 4
