GENESIS 2:19 The creation story reminds us of two important points. First, since the start, God has put the entire world into our care. Second, stewardship has been around since the beginning of mankind, it isn t something recently invented by the Church. Just as past generations build our Church, it is now our responsibility to continue to nurture and develop these gifts for future generations. 3 TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ OCTOBER 4, 2015 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK It is a longstanding Catholic custom to emphasize October as the month of the Rosary. The Rosary, one of our most venerated and recommended forms of prayer, focuses on the major events (or mysteries ) in the life of Jesus and Mary, urging us to contemplate them and build our lives around them. Although the Rosary is often credited to St. Dominic (c ), its origins actually predate him and cannot be precisely determined. But the Dominicans were certainly its foremost promoters. By the Fifteenth Century the Rosary assumed the form we are now familiar with. After opening with the Apostles Creed, an Our Father, three Hail Mary s, and the Glory Be to the Father, five decades are recited. They are called such because they contain ten Hail Mary s, which are preceded by an Our Father and followed by a Glory Be to the Father. As we say these prayers, we should be keeping in mind the occurrence the decade recalls. When the decades are completed, the Rosary concludes with the Hail Holy Queen, a prayer expressing our great confidence that Mary will aid us in our needs and help us reach our eternal destiny. The Rosary s mysteries long consisted of the Joyful, the Sorrowful and the Glorious. They focused, successively, on Jesus s early days, on his passion and death, and on his triumphant resurrection and its splendid consequences. In 2002, on the twenty-fourth anniversary of his papal election, John Paul II added five new mysteries to the traditional fifteen, calling them the Mysteries of Light. They direct our attention to key incidents in Our Lord s public life prior to Good Friday, and allow us to enjoy an even richer mediation on Christ s legacy. These new mysteries are: Christ s baptism in the Jordan Christ s self-revelation at the wedding in Cana His proclamation of God s Kingdom, with its call to conversion The Transfiguration The institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper If you would like to pray the Rosary but don t have a set of Rosary beads, we usually have some for you in the lower church. They have been gathered by the Knights of Columbus, who have put them there to be taken by anyone who wishes to have one. And if you would like an instruction sheet on how to pray the Rosary, which includes a listing of all the mysteries, please ask me for one. The purpose of the beads, of course, is to minimize distractions by helping you to easily keep track of how many Hail Mary s and Our Father s you ve said. Msgr. David Hubba 3 A LIVING ROSARY OCTOBER 7 All parishioners, both young and old, are invited to participate as a 'bead' on the Living Rosary on Wednesday, October 7, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, at 7:30 pm in the Upper Church. St. Joseph Council #3814 Knights of Columbus will be conducting a Recruitment Event with a Continental Breakfast Open House after all Masses on Sunday, October 4 at the K of C Hall at 199 River Road, New Milford. Prospective members (practicing Catholic men over the age of 18) and their families are invited, as well as members wishing to reconnect with the Council. For those unable to attend, prospect cards will be provided at the doors of the church. They can be filled out and dropped in a basket that islocated near the entrance. Join us! THE ARTIST Paul Saint-Aimé immigrated to the United States in 1993 and pursued a career with the city of New York until his retirement in All the while, he worked at his art. Landscapes, portraits, still life, biblical figures, all were done meticulously in acrylic revealing a talent that was within since childhood. Paul studied at the famed Salmagundi Club in NYC and received several rewards for his participation in various competitions. He exhibits nationally he had a very successful exhibit here at Saint Joseph in 2013 and his paintings are part of many collections. A DAY OF REFLECTION AT THE JERSEY SHORE On Thursday, October 22, Father Tom Iwanowski will direct a day of reflection and prayer at Saint Joseph by the Sea Spiritual Center located at the beautiful Jersey Shore in South Mantoloking, NJ. The program will include lunch, Mass, and three reflections that will consider the Sacraments as encounters with Christ that can give us a deeper understanding of ourselves, our human condition, and our purpose in life. These insights can deepen our appreciation of the gentle action of God in our lives. 6 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ WALK-IN DINNER PROGRAM FOR THE HUNGRY OCTOBER 6 On Tuesday, October 6 parishioners of Saint Joseph will be preparing and serving a meatloaf dinner for approximately 140 people in need at the Housing, Health & Human Services Center located at 120 South River St. in Hackensack. If you would like to help prepare or serve the dinner, your help will be sincerely appreciated. Because of your donations, SJS grads Erin Maron and Justine Garcia were able to collect over 2,000 books for the students of St. Joseph School in Jersey City. The girls told us that the children and teachers really appreciated it! And another thank you was received from Angeleisa Russert and Anuhea Moler (also both SJS grads). They extend their gratitude to all parishioner and school families who donated items for the Maker Space they created in the Park Ridge Library. One of the many Day of Service projects is to sort and package clothing for children in need. In advance we welcome donations of new or gently used pajamas, sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves, winter jackets and costs, leggings, pants, shows, socks, boots and shirts, in all sizes from babies and toddlers to teens. The clothing will be sorted and packaged for distribution to the orphanages of Ukraine. Clothing donations can be brought to the *Rectory garage before or after MASSES on October 3-4 and again on October CAR WASH OCTOBER 17 Plan to have your car washed at Saint Joseph on Saturday, October 17 (our Day of Service ).
