3 FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT~ FEBRUARY 14, 2016 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Samuel Johnson, England s leading 18th century man of letters, is renowned for his conversations, many of which have been preserved by his famous biographer James Boswell. Sometimes Johnson got so engrossed by them that he got completely carried away, as happened one day at the house of the painter, Sir Joshua Reynolds. Thomas Bernard, a clergyman who later became the Church of Ireland Bishop of Limerick, voiced the opinion that after fortyfive a man did not improve, a remark that greatly provoked Johnson, who reacted by saying loudly: I differ with you. A man may improve, and you yourself have great room for improvement. Something similar happened when Johnson was at the home of his friend Hester Thrale. Her nephew somehow annoyed Johnson by asking him, Would you advise me to marry? Johnson got carried away and replied, in effect, that he wouldn t recommend marriage to any man who would be unlikely to have children who were all that bright. But a little later, Mrs. Thrale recalled, Johnson, drawing up his chair among us, with altered looks and a softened voice led the conversation to the subject of marriage and spoke of it in a way that was so useful, so elegant, so founded on the true knowledge of human life that no one ever recollected the offense, except to rejoice in its consequences. Today has been designated World Marriage Sunday, a day to acknowledge and pray for all married couples, whose vocation it is to be the human foundation of the Church s life. I thought you might enjoy these ten principles on marriage and the family, an outcome of a meeting sponsored by the Princeton-based Witherspoon Institute. They are as follows: 1. Marriage is a personal union, intended for the whole of life, of husband and wife. 2. Marriage is a profound human good, elevating and perfecting our social and sexual nature. 3. Ordinarily, both men and women who marry are better off as a result. 4. Marriage protects and promotes the well-being of children. (continued above) CELEBRATING YOUR 5 TH, 25 TH OR 50 Th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY? The Archdiocese would like to honor those couples who celebrate five, twenty-five and fifty years of Christian marriage in the year These anniversary liturgies will take place in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark on the following dates: 5. Marriage sustains civil society and promotes the common good. 6. Marriage is a wealth-creating institution, increasing human and social capital. 7. When marriage weakens, the equality gap widens, as children suffer from the disadvantages of growing up in homes without committed mothers and fathers. 8. A functioning marriage culture serves to protect political liberty and foster limited government. 9. The laws that govern marriage matter significantly. 10. Civil marriage and religious marriage cannot be rigidly or completely divorced from one another. At one point, the report states that In virtually every known human society, the institution of marriage provides order and meaning to adult sexual relationships and, more fundamentally, furnishes the ideal context for the bearing and rearing of the young. The health of marriage is particularly important in a free society such as our own, which depends upon citizens to govern their private lives and rear their children responsibly, so as to limit the scope, size, and power of the state. Marriage is also an important source of social, human, and financial capital for children, especially for children growing up in poor, disadvantaged communities who do not have ready access to other sources of such capital. Thus, from the point of view of spouses, children, society, and the polity, marriage advances the public interest. 4 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ MESSAGE OF POPE FRANCIS FOR LENT 2016 WOMEN S COMMISSION DAY OF REFLECTION FEBRUARY 27 THE WORKS OF MERCY God s mercy transforms human hearts; it enables us, through the experience of a faithful love, to become merciful in turn. In an ever new miracle, divine mercy shines forth in our lives, inspiring each of us to love our neighbor and to devote ourselves to what the Church s tradition calls the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. These works remind us that faith finds expression in concrete everyday actions meant to help our neighbors in body and spirit: by feeding, visiting, comforting and instructing them. On such things will we be judged. For this reason, I expressed my hope that the Christian people may reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy; this will be a way to reawaken our conscience, too often grown dull in the face of poverty, and to enter more deeply into the heart of the Gospel where the poor have a special experience of God s mercy. For in the poor, the flesh of Christ becomes visible in the flesh of the tortured, the crushed, the scourged, the malnourished, and the exiled to be acknowledged, touched, and cared for by us. For all of us, then, the season of Lent in this Jubilee Year is a favorable time to overcome our existential alienation by listening to God s word and by practicing the works of mercy. In the corporal works of mercy we touch the flesh of Christ in our brothers and sisters who need to be fed, clothed, sheltered, visited; in the spiritual works of mercy counsel, instruction, forgiveness, admonishment and prayer we touch more directly our own sinfulness. The corporal and spiritual works of mercy must never be separated. By touching the flesh of the crucified Jesus in the suffering, sinners can receive the gift of realizing that they too are poor and in need. Let us not waste this season of Lent, so favorable a time for conversion! We ask this through the maternal intercession of the Virgin Mary, who, encountering the greatness of God s mercy freely bestowed upon her, was the first to acknowledge her lowliness (cf. Lk 1:48) and to call herself the Lord s humble servant (cf. Lk 1:38). Jim Moran, who served at Saint Joseph Church in 2001 in our Religious Education program (the year before he was ordained a deacon), passed away on February 6, Fr. Jim, who was a familiar face here at Saint Joseph over the years, especially during celebrations of the sacrament of Penance, was ordained a priest in May He served at various New Jersey parishes in Tenafly, Closter, Elmwood Park, Westfield and Belleville. He also served as chaplain for Pascack Valley Hospital in Westwood. We extend our deepest sympathy to his family and to his friends at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Tenafly where his funeral Mass was held. Eternal rest grant unto his soul, O Lord. 6 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ ATTENTION ALL CORNERSTONE LADIES! WOMEN'S CORNERSTONE MEETING FEBRUARY 17 SJS PRINCIPAL S HUSBAND RECEIVES HONOR James Vail, President of Paramus Catholic High School and husband of Saint Joseph School Principal Colette Vail, was recently awarded the Saint Francis Staff Award presented to a former staff member of Aquinas Catholic Schools (Wisconsin) who made a significant impact on the students of Aquinas. As Colette explains it, Jim was Principal at Aquinas High School for seven years before coming to Bergen County. During his tenure he was recognized not only for having brought the educational standards to the next level, but also for beginning a building campaign that raised $7,000,000 to fund an addition to the school (which he designed himself on a paper napkin during a lunch meeting with his Board). The front of the addition is shaped like half a violin (see photo) and that particular area is the music suite, Colette told us. The addition also includes a new gym as well as seven new classrooms, doubling the actual size of the building. And Jim s contributions to the school went even further when he started and coached the first ever Boys Soccer Team at the school. Congratulations, Mr. Vail, on a wonderful honor! This Wednesday, February 17 is our last preparation meeting before our weekend on March 4-5. Please plan to join us as we pray together and make last minute plans for our coming weekend. A beautiful night is being planned and we don't want you to miss it. The meeting is this Wednesday night at the K of C Hall on River Road in New Milford at 7:30 pm.
