Several priests will be available for confession. If you have been away from the sacrament, this is a fine way to celebrate God s mercy and forgiveness and to prepare yourself for Easter. 3 THE PASTOR S COLUMN SAINT PATRICK & SAINT JOSEPH & OUR PARISH As I write this column Tuesday afternoon, black smoke has appeared over Saint Peter s in Rome. We have no pope, though by the time you read this column, I am sure that will not be the case. A new man will have been chosen to carry on the work of Saint Peter as Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Christ, and Shepherd of the Universal Church. I cannot imagine the sense of responsibility a person feels who is chosen for such an awesome ministry. It s a challenge being the pastor of a parish. What must it be like to be pastor of a parish that encompasses the entire world? Our new Holy Father will certainly need our prayers. That is why the pope is prayed for at every Mass celebrated in every Catholic Church around the globe. The mention of his name also reminds us of our connection with him and with the wider Church to which we belong. To be a Catholic is to be part of a worldwide Church. Speaking of names, today, March 17, and Tuesday, March 19, we honor two saints whose names are very familiar to all Catholics and to many other people as well, namely, Saint Patrick and Saint Joseph. Saint Patrick s Day falls on the day that Patrick died in 461 AD. In the Church we celebrate the day a saint dies, since that is the day we believe that person was born to the fullness of life in the Kingdom of God. So today, 1,552 years after his death we honor that remarkable man and the Irish people who were brought to faith in Christ by his teaching and example of holiness. Saint Patrick s influence continues down to this very day in Catholic Churches not only in Ireland but throughout the world. Saint Patrick and the monks that followed him were very instrumental in spreading the idea of individual, private confession. Before that time the confession of sin was a much more public event that involved sinners publically performing some act of penance to atone for their sins before being forgiven and reconciled with the Church. Saint Patrick and those who followed him made the practice less severe by allowing people to privately admit their sins and then perform their penance in ways that would not be known to the entire community. That of course is the way we celebrate the sacrament today. In fact, our Communal Penance Service tomorrow, Monday, March 18, 7:30 pm will include the private, individual confession that became part of the Church s practice due in part to the influence of Saint Patrick. The FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT, MARCH 17, service will include song, readings, a homily, an examination of conscience, and then a time for individual confessions. This service is a great way to respond to the challenge of this Lenten season to turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel. Tuesday, March 19, the Church s attention shifts to Saint Joseph, the husband of Mary and the protector of the child Jesus. This feast is a special one in our parish since it was named in honor of Saint Joseph. It always is a special day when a parish celebrates the feast of its patron saint. Saint Joseph is mentioned in the Gospels. He is described as a good and righteous man who was obedient to the direction of God. When told to take Mary as his wife, he obeyed. When told to flee to Egypt in order to protect the child Jesus, he obeyed. When told to return to Nazareth after the death of King Herod, he obeyed. Saint Joseph listened and did what God asked. It is interesting to note that there are no words attributed to Saint Joseph in the four Gospels. He is the silent saint, who quietly went about doing what God asked. He was also the one who taught Jesus to follow in his footsteps as a carpenter until Jesus began his ministry of proclaiming the Gospel. Saint Joseph, our patron saint, serves as a good example for us. We are to be a parish that faithfully listens to the voice of God and strives to do what God asks without fuss or fanfare. We are also to be a parish that, like Saint Joseph, is willing to risk in order to move forward. If Joseph was unwilling to move or change or risk, he would never have taken Mary to be his wife or left Nazareth for Bethlehem and Egypt. In addition to being our patron, Saint Joseph is patron of the Universal Church. He was declared such by Pope Pius IX in Having our parish named after Saint Joseph is another reminder that we are part of something much bigger than just the Archdiocese of Newark. That wider connection explains why you and I have been so interested in the conclave to elect a new pope to guide the Church throughout the world. This Tuesday, I encourage you to join us for Mass on Saint Joseph s Day. We will have Mass at 7 am or 8:30 am and again at 10:30 am. The principal Mass of the day will be at 10:30 am and it will include the children of our school. If you have never attended a school liturgy, you will find it a joyful and prayerful experience. Through the intercession of Saint Patrick may we grow in our awareness of God s mercy and forgiveness. And through the intercession of Saint Joseph may we always do what is right, no matter the cost! Fr. Tom congratulated them on receiving the Marian Medal which was awarded March 3 at the Cathedral Basilica. BINGO & BASKET The Saint Joseph Social Concerns Committee will be sponsoring a Bingo & Basket, fundraiser to support our Sister Parish, the Church of the Resurrection in Jersey City on Thursday evening, April 25 in the Saint Joseph Lower School Gym. 5 ARCHBISHOP S ANNUAL APPEAL Making a Difference The Archdiocese of Newark s Office of Human Concerns works to spread the Gospel s challenge of our need to care for the poor and the marginalized within our society. It does this by making presentations in parishes, schools and religious education programs about the importance of Catholic Social Teaching, specific social issues, and the importance of service in the life of the Church. The Office of Human Concerns also works with youth groups from both the Archdiocese of Newark and nationally who are looking for service projects and an opportunity to reflect on their experiences. During the last two summers, over 80 young people from around the country will come to the Archdiocese to serve the poor with service projects in our shelters, parishes, and soup kitchens. This Office creates a greater awareness of the important social issues of the day such as poverty, climate change, and fair housing by providing information to parishes and practical ways to be involved in making positive changes to the world. Thank you for your support of the Archbishop s Annual Appeal, which makes the Office of Human Concerns a reality! AAA AT SAINT JOSEPH So far we have received $46,287 of our assigned goal of $63,000. ANNULMENT INFORMATION EVENING An Annulment Information Evening is scheduled for Wednesday, April 10 at St. Stephen s Church, 141 Washington Avenue, Kearny, NJ, at 7:30 pm. A member of the staff of the Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Newark will provide basic information about annulments, the requirements for annulments, and how to begin the process of petitioning for an annulment. 6 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from Saint John 8:1-11. One day while Jesus was teaching, certain leaders brought a woman before him who had done something very wrong. The punishment for her sin was stoning a group of people would throw stones at her until she died. The leaders asked if she should be punished. Jesus said, Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her. This made everyone stop and think. No one could say that he or she had never sinned. One by one, the people began to leave without throwing a single stone. Eventually it was just Jesus and the woman who remained. Jesus told her, Go and from now on do not sin anymore. Jesus knows that we all sin every one of us. In this Gospel, he shows us that rather than judging others, we should forgive them. In our own lives, if a friend does something to hurt us we might want to hurt that person back. We might want to show him or her what it feels like to be hurt. But Jesus doesn t want us to do that. He wants us to be like him and to forgive the person who hurt us. He wants us to give them a second chance. MISSION OF THE WEEK We are almost at the end of Lent. Think of one thing you have done wrong. Ask Jesus to forgive you. Pray to God to give you the strength to forgive others too. There will be NO Liturgy of the Word With Children on March 24, Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion, or on March 31, Easter Sunday. It will resume on Sunday, April 7 at the Mass. 6
