3 St. John Vianney, patron of priests, said that, The Sacrament of Holy Orders seems not related to anyone among you, and yet very related to everyone. This Sacrament raises a man up to God. What is a priest? A man who holds the place of God a man who is ordained with all the powers of God. Jesus says, Go! As the Father sent me, so I send you (Jn. 20:21). All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age (Mt. 28: 18). Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me, and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me (Lk. 10: 16). When the priest remits sins, he does not say, God pardons you; he says, I absolve you. At the Consecration, he does not say, This is the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus; he says, This is my Body This is my Blood for he acts in persona Christi especially during the administration of sacraments. But what about when our clergyman (bishop, priest and deacon including the pope) clearly sins and teaches error, when would it be prudent to correct them or fight in and for the Church of God? Many people make fundamental mistakes: SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ JULY 24, They regard the Church as primarily a politicaltype organization in which the weapons of politics pressure, exposure, satire and the like are seen as appropriate; and 2. On the analogy of democratic politics where the system provides for throwing the rascals out when they do not follow the popular will of the prominent benefactors, they challenge the authorities of the Church directly as if these authorities were office-holders under a democratic system. Neither of these reactions is really appropriate for a Catholic with regard to the Church. Concerning the first reaction, that we must exert pressures on the authorities of the Church and expose their negligence and lapses, we must remember that we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against FROM THE DESK OF FATHER ROY Fr. (continued above) 3 principalities, against powers against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places (Eph. 6: 12), i.e., ultimately against evil spirits; and that spiritual, not political, weapons are what are most required in such a spiritual battle. When it is asked how we fight those who are sowing errors and confusion in the Church, remember the words of Jesus saying, if my kingdom were of this world, my followers would fight (Jn 18:36). But Christ s Kingdom is not of this world and hence we are not to fight in the political sense if we are truly reflecting on what it means to be a servant of Christ. Witness to our faith and bear fruit in our lives, yes; but fight? This does not mean that we should not proclaim Catholic truth and refute error with whatever means available to us, or respectfully to draw the attention of Church authorities to certain errors or abuses. St. Thomas Aquinas, in his Summa Theologiae, teaches us that, if a clergyman clearly sins or teaches error, we must admonish him in a becoming manner, not with impudence and harshness but with gentleness and respect (STh., II-II q. 33 a. 4 resp). It must be observed, however, that if the morals and faith are gravely endangered, we must rebuke the clergyman even publicly. Hence Paul, who was Peter s subject, rebuked him in public on account of the imminent danger of scandal concerning faith (Galatians 2:11). To presume oneself to be simply better than others would seem to savor of presumptuous pride, but it is not being presumptuous to correct if the morals and faith error are obvious. If we find that we are guilty of the same sin, we must not rebuke the clergyman, but groan with him, and invite him to repent with us. Remember that the priests of early Christian communities were not more perfect than they are today and sometimes needed correction. St. Augustine, in his Rule, says: Show mercy not only to yourselves, but also to the clergy who, being in the higher position among you, is therefore in greater danger (De Civitate Dei, 1). Fraternal correction is a work of mercy. Therefore even a bishop, priest or deacon ought to be corrected. (continued on next page)

Roy continued) St. Thomas Aquinas says that, the fraternal correction which is an act of charity is within the competency of everyone in respect of any person towards whom he is bound by charity, provided there be something in that person which requires correction (STh., II-II q. 33 a. 4-5). But any Christian can fraternally correct any other Christian (including the clergy), if it is done out of charity (all charityless motives are suspect), but only if the correction is subjectively correct and necessary and (2) if it is done with respect for the office and with gentleness to the person, and (3) it is done in private, (4) unless innocent people would be harmed if not done in public; (5) It must be done without the sins of presumption and pride; (6) and it must be done without the hypocrisy of being guilty of the very same sin or error oneself. Notice how much moral common sense St. Thomas has. He constantly avoids easy opposite errors, e.g., laxity or judgmentalism. St. John Vianney states that, the priest is not a priest for himself; he does not give himself absolution; he does not administer the Sacraments to himself. He is not for himself. He is for you. When people wish to destroy the Church, they begin by attacking the priest. Before you admonish your priest, you must pray enough and do enough penance for him first. The priest will not understand the greatness of his office till he is in heaven. If he understood it on earth, he would die, not of fear, but of love. The priesthood is the love of the Heart of Jesus. When you see a priest, think of Our Lord Jesus Christ. And please remember that priests are human too. Pray for all priests! Please pray for me. Fr. 5 SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ JULY 24, 2016 WORLD YOUTH DAY 2016 JULY World Youth Day (WYD) is a worldwide encounter with the Pope which is typically celebrated every three years in a different country. This year s event will be held in Krakow, Poland. WYD is open to all young people who want to take part in a festive encounter with their contemporaries centered on Jesus Christ. It is a unique way for young people to experience in the first person the universality of the Church and to deepen their faith and grow closer to Christ, by means of prayer and the sacraments, together with thousands of other young people. The logo for World Youth Day 2016 (shown above) features the outline of Poland with a marker that signifies the location of Krakow as well as the face of the young people who will gather together. The city and the pilgrims are situated at the food of Christ and the Cross, from which flow the red and blue rays of Divine Mercy. The colors of the logo (red, blue and yellow) are the official colors of the city of Krakow. The patron saints of WYD 2016 are Saint John Paul II and Saint Faustina, both from Poland. Their lives became intertwined as they followed God s voice in their lives. In September, Saint Joseph will be starting a Junior Youth Group (for students in Grades 6-7-8). Our Youth Minister, Donna Cirino, is looking for adults (age 21 and up) who would like to be part of this exciting ministry. Washington Post 1710 grew beyond what was initially reported to a grand total of $2,236. On behalf of the members of Post 1710 and the veterans at the NJ Veterans Home in Paramus and those in the community, the CWV thanks parishioners for their donations. Your generosity will go a long way this year toward obtaining many needed items, such as sleepwear, socks, underwear, hygienic products, towels, Bibles and prayer books, special blankets, snack items, and more for the men and women who have given so much of themselves. Your contributions from last year were directed towards the purchase of major appliances for six special housing units on Farview Avenue in Paramus for severely disabled veterans and their families. All the veterans who benefited from your generous giving thank you and pray for you. At Mass at the Veterans Home they asked for God's blessing upon you as part of the prayer intentions.
