Let us remember those serving in the military: May they be protected and return home unharmed. 2 FEAST OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION THURSDAY, DECEMBER 8, A HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION This Thursday, December 8, is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, a holy day on which all Catholics are expected to participate in the celebration of Mass. This holy day celebrates our belief that through the favor of God, Mary was kept free from sin and the power of evil from the first moment of her conception. For us as Americans, this day is especially significant since Mary, under the title of the Immaculate Conception, is the patroness of the United States. Masses for the holy day are as follows: Wednesday, December 7, 7:30 pm Thursday, December 8, 7 am,, 10 am Please note: There is no evening Mass on December 8. CHRISTMAS TREE & WREATH SALE DECEMBER 9, 10, 11 SUPPORT OUR TARGET YOUTH GROUP The TARGET Christmas Tree and Wreath Sale is next weekend. Trees and wreaths will be on sale in the rectory parking lot on Friday, December 9, from 6-9 pm; Saturday, December 10, from 9 am-6 pm; and Sunday, December, 11, from 9 am -1 pm. Please come support our youth ministry program and get a beautiful tree or wreath to help make your Christmas season bright. GIVING THOUGHT During this Advent Season, John the Baptist calls us to prepare the way so that the Lord may come more fully into our life. One way we do that is by turning from selfconcern to concern for God s Church and for those in need. Each time we give a sacrificial gift to the Church and to others in need, we express a desire for the Lord to come more fully into our hearts. 3 THE PASTOR S COLUMN AND WITH YOUR SPIRIT Last weekend, the First Weekend of Advent, was an historic one. We began using the new English translation of the Third Edition of the Roman Missal for the first time. The Roman Missal is the book that contains all the prayers of the Mass. For us and for all Catholics throughout the United States, it was a weekend of having our eyes fixed on our worship aids so we would know what to say and when to say it. After having said certain words and phrases for some 30 or more years, it was hard to adjust to new words. That was especially true of the response to the greeting of the priest. The priest says The Lord be with you. And the people are now to say And with your spirit. However, there were plenty of And also with you responses last weekend, and I think that will be the case for some time. As challenging as it might have been for you, it was even more so for priests. Having celebrated Mass for 36 years with one set of words and having become very comfortable with them, I was now back to relying on the printed words in the Missal and trying hard to get my mouth to say what my eyes saw. The new more literal translation with its long and complex sentences will take some getting used to by all of us. A TRUE AID TO WORSHIP As we were celebrating Mass, I was glad we had our own specially designed worship aids. I think that made things much easier. Our parish worship aids are laid out in such a way that the new responses are easy to find and the differences in translations are clearly indicated. Some parishes had people with a hymn book in one hand and a card with the new responses in another. I was glad we took advantage of the permission given us to begin learning the new sung Mass setting in advance. When last weekend arrived we already knew how to sing the new Gloria; the new Holy, Holy; the new Mystery of Faith or Memorial Acclamation; the new Great Amen; and the new Lamb of God. Our music ministers did a good job of preparing us. A FIRST ANNIVERSARY Speaking of music, last weekend, Monroe Quinn, marked his first year as our Director of Music. He began working with us November 27, We are fortunate to have him with us. It was year of learning for him as this is his first full time position as a parish music director. Also when he began last year, he had to hit the ground running. It was the Advent / Christmas season, certainly one of the busiest times in any Catholic parish. SECOND SUNDAY IN ADVENT DECEMBER 4, BAPTISMS As you can see on page five of the bulletin we recently had seven baptisms at our parish. Three of those baptisms took place at our 5 pm Mass on Saturday, November 19, and four took place the following day at our 12 Noon Mass. When we introduced our new baptism preparation program we also moved the celebration of baptism to within Mass. Ideally, baptism should take place when the community of the Church is gathered together and that happens when we gather for Sunday Mass. Also by having baptisms at Mass we continually deepen our own understanding of baptism. In addition, having baptism at Mass allows us to fulfill one of our responsibilities as Christians. We are to be involved with welcoming new people into the Church and into a relationship with Jesus Christ. Incidentally, anyone wishing to have their child baptized at our parish should ideally contact the parish office no later than the fifth month of pregnancy. In this way parents can take advantage of the different aspects of our new baptism preparation program. Love, Fr. Tom Iwanowski CORNERSTONE CHRISTMAS PARTY TUESDAY, DECEMBER 6 An invitation to all who have ever made Cornerstone Retreat. You are invited to join with us on Tuesday night, December 6, at 7:30 pm at the K of C Hall in New Milford, as we celebrate the Birth of our Savior, The Reason for the Season! Please bring an ornament for the tree, and put Cornerstone XX and your name on it. When you leave, take an ornament with you to hang on your tree at home to celebrate our togetherness. Your spouse or significant other is also invited, even if they have not made a Cornerstone Retreat, we're sure they will have a memorable evening. There will be music, food and good fellowship. We also ask that you bring one of your special Christmas goodies, if possible, for our sharing table. If your last name begins with letters A - M we ask that you bring an appetizer, and N - Z a dessert. Mark your calendar and plan to join in this wonderful celebration of this beautiful Holy season! MEN S CORNERSTONE MEETING DEC. 14 All men in the parish who have made Cornerstone Retreat are invited to attend our next monthly meeting on Wednesday, December 14, at 8 pm in the basement of the Brothers Residence located on Grand Street. Join us as we share friendship, spiritual renewal, refreshments, and some early Christmas cheer. As the preparation for our journey toward Men s Cornerstone XX increases, please pray for the Lord s blessings on our efforts.

4 SHARING THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS THROUGH THE GIVING TREE Help bring the joy of Christmas to those less fortunate by taking a tag from the Giving Trees located in the entrance area of the church. Purchase the requested gift; and place the wrapped gift under the tree the next time you come to Mass. It is very important that the tag you took from the Giving Tree be attached securely to the wrapped gift so that it will reach the correct person on Christmas. All Giving Tree Gifts need to be returned no later than Sunday-December 11 The agencies we are helping need to pick up the gifts during that week. Please return your gift on time. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Advent Reconciliation Service for Grade 7 Advent Reconciliation Service for Students in Grades 7 will take place this Wednesday, December 7, at 4:40 pm in the Upper Church. Please make every effort to attend. Celebration of First Reconciliation On Saturday, December 10, the children of the Communion Class of 2012 will celebrate their First Reconciliation at a special service at 10 am in the Upper Church. Confirmation Program This Sunday afternoon, December 11, at 2 pm, in the Upper Church, the Confirmation Candidates and their families will celebrate the Mass of Blessing. TARGET TRIP TO NYC Sunday, December 18, is TARGET s annual trip into New York City to enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of the Christmas season. We will begin with Mass at St. Patrick s Cathedral and then go to see the tree at Rockefeller Center. We will also stop at FAO Schwartz and the Toys R Us in Times Square. Permission Slips are available at all TARGET events. Every Thursday night from 7-9pm in the TARGET Room, we have our Hangout Night with pool, ping pong, and prayer time. AN EVENING IN DECEMBER Our Music Ministers Domenick Panfile and Peter Greco will perform at Calvary United Methodist Church, 185 West Madison Ave. in Dumont to benefit a local charity. The evening will include a Dinner and Holiday Concert Saturday Dec. 10. Dinner at 6 pm. Concert at 7:30 pm. Dinner & concert combo tickets for adults: $20. Tickets for Ages 8 to 15 years: $12. THANK YOU FROM RESURRECTION Thank you from our hearts for the most generous donation of food and money given to the poor in downtown Jersey City. It was deeply appreciated and gave the blessing of Thanksgiving to these families. At Resurrection, we feed about 500 families per week, so you can understand how grateful we are for all you have done to help us. You and your loved ones will have a special place in the prayers of all of us who serve at Resurrection School and Parish. Peace, Fr. Vic, Sr. Barbara and Sr. Eleanor CANDLELIGHT CAROL SING The 41 st Annual Candlelight Carol Sing will be held at the Cathedral Basilica, in Newark, on Wednesday, December 14 & Thursday, December 15, at 8 pm. Doors open at 7 pm both evenings. Christmas music will be sung by the Cathedral Choir with the assembly and will be accompanied by the great Cathedral organs and brass ensemble. 6 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from St. Mark Chapter 1 verses 1-8. A prophet is a messenger of God sent to make an announcement to God s people. In today s Gospel, Jesus tells us about a prophet called John the Baptist. He was a cousin of Jesus. John was sent to give us an important message. To stop our sinful ways and to do things God s way. For example, sinful ways are being bossy or rude which can hurt someone s feelings. John the Baptist tells us to be kind and thoughtful. He also tells us that we are children of God because we were washed in the waters of Baptism when our parents had us baptized. During this time of Advent, let us ask God to forgive our sins and to help us live like Jesus. NOTE TO PARENTS The Liturgy of the Word with Children takes place at our 9 am Sunday Mass. During that Mass the younger children are sent forth just before the First Reading and go to the lower church for their own celebration of God's Word. The readings, homily, songs and prayers are geared to their understanding. The children return before the presentation of the gifts to continue the celebration of the Liturgy with their families. We want God's Good News to be exciting for the younger members of our parish family. If you want to participate in this committee, you can contact us at kids@sjcnj.org.
