2 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." Oh, to be on that mountain! What a priceless experience for Peter, James, and John. If they had ever doubted, if they wondered whether Jesus was really who he said he was, their confidence surely got a boost on the day of the Transfiguration. Before their very eyes, Jesus' divine beauty radiated gloriously while the two ancient prophets also appeared in miraculous manner. And to top it off, the voice of God the Father spoke from the heavens and confirmed that it was all true: Jesus really is the Son of God! Why did Jesus reveal himself in such a remarkable way to these men? Perhaps we have an answer in today's epistle. Peter writes, "We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven while we were with him on the holy mountain." Peter mentions this fact in order to confirm his credibility as a preacher as he goes on to say, "We possess the prophetic message that is altogether reliable. You will do well to be attentive to it." Because of the mission that Peter had to help shape and nurture the Church in its earliest days, his position as an "eyewitness" to the Transfiguration helped to gain the attention, and the faith, of his hearers. So although we were not there during this holy apparition, we have the benefit of it. We, and the faithful through the ages, have heard the testimony that Jesus is truly our God from those who saw in person that it was for real. In this way, the Transfiguration is able to bolster the faith of many, not just the three men who were there that day. May we have the grace to allow the feast we celebrate today to truly deepen our faith. LPi 2 ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY A HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION AUGUST 15 MASSES: MON., AUG. 14 at 7:30 PM; TUES., AUG. 15 at 7:00 AM, 8:30 AM & 7:30 PM The church has always held to the belief that Mary was assumed, body and soul, into a heavenly state, even though the belief was not declared as dogmatic until The celebration of the event as a 1 feast dates back to the fourth century in the East and the seventh 3 century in the West. Since Mary was untouched by the stain of sin, she was unable to experience the "wages of sin," which is death. But her Assumption also says something about humanity as well. Sin only has power over us if we allow it. Mary was freed from this power in her Immaculate Conception, and when she responded "yes" to God. We were freed from that power when Jesus died and rose, conquering death. Now, we must respond "yes" to claim the victory that was already won for us. On this feast, we should not only celebrate the great works God has done for us through Our Lady, but also celebrate the truth that we have the opportunity to one day spend eternity with her and her Son, 4Jesus. 3 THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD ~ AUGUST 6, 2017 BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP SEPTEMBER 15 OCTOBER 13 FROM THE DESK OF FATHER ANDREW Fr. Andrew Park is Parochial Vicar at Saint Joseph and moderator of many of our Liturgical and Youth Ministries. Msgr. Hubba s column will return next Sunday. When grieving the loss of a loved one, individuals may feel overwhelmed and lonely. Adapting to life after the death of a loved one often takes more time than we expect. Recognizing that by virtue of our baptism into the Christian faith we are called by Jesus to minister to one another, our parish community of Saint Joseph will offer a Bereavement Support Group led by Sister Josefina Morales and Kurt Strobach for our brothers and sisters who have lost a loved one through death. (Parishioners from other churches are also welcome.) The purpose of the group is to provide opportunities for mutual healing in a confidential, educational and spiritual environment. The group will meet for 8 weeks on Fridays (7:00-9:00 pm) from September 15-October 13. If you would like to participate or if you need more information, please contact our parish secretary Gerry at JOIN ONE OF OUR PARISH MINISTRIES You are cordially invited to become part of one of the many ministries of Saint Joseph Parish. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Nursing Home Mass (Care One in Oradell): We need volunteers who can help out at Mass. The Mass is celebrated every Monday at 2:00 pm. Nursing Home Ministers of Holy Communion (Care One in Oradell): We need Ministers who are willing to visit with and bring Holy Communion to the sick every Sunday right after the 9:00 am Mass. BECOME AN EXTRAORDINARY MINISTER OF HOLY COMMUNION Home Bound Ministry: We need Ministers of Holy Communion who are willing to visit and bring Holy Communion to the sick at home. Junior Altar Servers: We need 5th to 8th grade students (from both Saint Joseph School and our Religious Ed program) who are willing to serve at Sunday or weekday Masses from September through June. Training will be provided. Do you feel called to help distribute the Body and Blood of Christ at Mass?... to bring the Sacrament of the Eucharist to the homebound and the sick? Saint Joseph Parish is looking to form new Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to help in this essential ministry. Those interested will receive training and be mandated by the Archdiocese of Newark as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. Children's Liturgy of the Word: We need volunteers, preferably catechists, who would be willing to guide and teach children during 9:00 am Sunday Mass from September through May. Youth Group: All high school students who are willing to grow and mature in the faith of Christ are invited to join. Please contact our Youth Minister Donna Cirino at or the meeting schedules. Confirmation Team Leaders: Any 10th, 11th, and 12th grade student who is already confirmed and wants to help our 9th grade students prepare for Confirmation are invited to participate. SEPARATED/DIVORCED HEALING MINISTRY Saint Joseph Parish will be offering a special support program in the Fall for Catholics who are separated/divorced. If you feel called by the Holy Spirit to be part of our team of co-facilitators and would like to help launch this ministry in our parish, please call Annette Ziegler at or her at aziggy314@gmail.com for more information. Training will be provided. Junior Legion of Mary: All students from 5th through 12th grade who have a desire to serve Our Lord Jesus Christ through the intercession of his Blessed Mother Mary are invited to join. MATTHEW 17:2 Just as the moon reflects the light of the sun, we should reflect Christ s light to the world. When we receive the Eucharist, the body and blood of Jesus, we are called to be supernatural to reflect His love, mercy and forgiveness to others. When we are grateful for all that God has given us, generosity flows through us because we are made in God s image.
