2 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ WALKING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF JESUS 1 Fr. Roy took 51 pilgrims to the Holy Land last January, eleven of whom were Saint Joseph parishioners. He will be returning in January 2018 and encourages anyone wishing to deepen their faith and explore Scripture in the actual places where the Lord walked, to join him. Take a look at some of the wonderful photos from the last pilgrimage-retreat The city of Jerusalem; 2. The Upper Room where the Last Supper took place; 3. The Garden of Gethsemane; 4. YOU CAN STILL DONATE TO THE GOOD FRIDAY CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS APPEAL NEXT WEEKEND, APRIL COLLECTION FOR THE HOLY LAND You can still donate to this pontifical collection requested by Pope Francis. It offers a direct link for parishioners to be witnesses of peace and to help protect the Holy Places. And it helps to support Christians in the Holy Land, many of whom depend upon it for their lives. Franciscans and others in the Holy Land are housing and feeding the poor, providing religious formation and education, maintaining shrines and parishes, and conducting pastoral ministry. 4 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ FROM THE PASTOR S DESK From at least the fifth century the Church collected from its most notable writers chains (in Latin, catena ) of commentary on Biblical passages. Without these anthologies, many of these writings would probably not have survived. One of them, devoted to remarks on the four Gospels, was the treasured work of the great St. Thomas Aquinas, and came to be affectionately known as his Catena Aurea, or The Golden Chain. In its treatment of one of the New Testament s passages on the Resurrection of Jesus, Mark 16, St. Thomas noted that the women who went to his sepulcher early on the first Easter Sunday did so because they could not complete their funerary attentions to his body on the afternoon of his death, since the Sabbath was looming, during which no work would have been allowed. And so they went to the tomb as soon as light made these tasks possible after the Sabbath ended. Thomas cites the interpretation of an ancient writer named Severianus, who says that these women clearly were not expecting the Resurrection and so belief in it was in no way a result of their fanciful wishes or imagination. OUR LADY OF FATIMA STATUE The Legion of Mary would like to acknowledge the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima by making the statue of Our Lady available to visit the homes of our parishioners. It is the Legion's goal to have the Pilgrim statue visit homes weekly until October 2017 in recognition of the centennial. Two statues are available to accommodate our goal. very life of Jesus himself. As each year s spring gives the world of nature new life, so God has offered such to us spiritually, and we can hardly rejoice enough that, in the beautiful words of St. Paul, It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me (Gal 2, 20). St. Jerome, the Church s foremost scriptural scholar, expressed this reason for our joy magnificently when he wrote that Immortality is shown to mortal men, that we may make fitting thanks and that we may understand what we have been, and know what we shall be. And his equally great contemporary St. Augustine paid high tribute to the meaning of this day when he preached about Christ with his typically marvelous eloquence: He died, but he vanquished death; in himself he put an end to what we feared; he took it upon himself and he vanquished it, as a mighty hunter he captured and slew the lion. Where is death? Seek it in Christ, for it exists no longer; but it did exist and now it is dead. O life, O death of death! Be of good heart; it will die in us, also. What has taken place in our head will take place in his members; death will die in us also. To all of you who believe in Christ: A most happy Easter! Msgr. Catholic men age eighteen and older are invited to join our chapter St. Joseph Council #3814 which has been serving the Church, community, family and youth of Oradell/New Milford for more than 60 years. The motto of the Knights is Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. St. Joseph Council exemplifies these qualities in the many charitable programs it sponsors, including food and eyeglass donation programs for the needy, student scholarships, book donations, a youth basketball free throw contest, seminarian scholarships, a community awards program, and more. The Knights participate in the Alzheimer s Memory Walk, a drive for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities, and they annually distribute 9/11 Prayer for Peace cards. They help over fifteen different charities, including Several Sources Shelter, Little Sisters of the Poor, NJ Veterans Home, New Milford Fire Department and Ambulance Corps, and Children s aid and Family Service. Members can participate in dozens of activities, including Dinner/Dances for both Columbus Day and St. Patrick s Day, Comedy Night, guest speakers, Pride for Priests Dinner, rosary bead distribution, Christmas Open House and much more. After a dinner meeting with the priests of our Deanery, he will celebrate Mass at St. Peter the Apostle Church in River Edge at 7:30 pm for the people of our parishes who wish to attend. The evening will conclude with a town hall-style meeting. Because of this gathering, which we hope many will be able to attend, there will be NO Novena on Monday, May 1 at Saint Joseph.

Saint Joseph Parish s goal in this annual campaign, which helps to fund so many of the Archdiocesan ministries and programs that provide social, educational and spiritual support to thousands of people each year, is $85, Ninety-eight donors from Saint Joseph have pledged a total of $20,026 to date. ANNUAL LITURGY FOR THOSE WHOSE CHILDREN HAVE DIED MAY 12 The 30th Annual Liturgy for Those Whose Children Have Died will be held on Friday, May 12 at 7:30 pm at Notre Dame RC Church, 359 Central Avenue, North Caldwell, NJ. All parents who have suffered the death of a child of any age are invited to attend with their families and friends. The name of each child is read during the Mass. A collection bin will be placed in our entrance foyer to help alleviate diaper need for families in northern NJ. Your diaper donations will be greatly appreciated and will be distributed to the most vulnerable children in our community.
