3 SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, JULY 27, 2014 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK St. Martha, whose feast day is Tuesday, is almost impossible to consider without reference to her sister Mary. The two are mentioned together in Lk 10, 38-42, where they have a spat with each other during a visit Jesus made to their home. They have acquired almost proverbial identities. Martha has become Miss In-Charge: an irritated complainer with a determined, rather flinty disposition. She has come off the worse for comparison. The Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral, the first Latin American writer to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature (in 1945), nails this depiction of Martha well when she writes that Martha s cups and dishes clattered, her kettles bubbled. Her chickenyard teemed with roosters, a whirr of plover and dove. She bustled to and fro lost in a cloud of feathers. The Italian poet Giuseppe Gioacchino Belli sees Martha in similar terms, and has her grumble to Jesus about her sister: I m tied up day and night. I ve never complained, but I m getting tired I m always on my feet; you can t find this painted doll of a saint except, of course, when there s something to eat. Mary s persona is usually far more appealing. It has certainly benefited by Jesus s endorsement of her choice of spending time with him over frantically bustling over all the details of hospitality although Luke s account doesn t have to mean that Our Lord didn t enjoy the cranberry muffins, or whatever else Martha served. In the Christian life, there is certainly room for both the tangible and competent work of Martha, and for the prayerful attentiveness of the devoted Mary. There has to be the right sort of balance, of course. But it can be achieved. And so much of our success in life depends on accomplishing the feat. Msgr. David Hubba SAINT JOSEPH PARISH 2015 MASS BOOK TO OPEN THURSDAY, AUGUST 7 FOR MASS REQUESTS, USE 2015 MASS INTENTION FORM PRINTED ON PAGE 6 OF THIS BULLETIN. Masses will be assigned on a first come basis. No prior requests can be taken. Mass Intention requests will not be taken over the phone. We can only honor requests made in person and submitted on the Mass Intention Form. Please tear the Form (p. 6) out of the bulletin. Bring the completed form to the parish office when you arrange for the Masses. State the full name of the person for whom the Mass Intention is requested. Please print clearly. Mass Intention Donation is $10 per request. Donation is payable at the time of request to: Saint Joseph Church. For the first two weeks that the book is open, there is a maximum limit of 5 Masses per family. Please do not request all Mass Intentions to be scheduled for Sunday and Holy Days. Mass Intentions may be requested for Christmas OR Easter, but not both Mass Intention requests will be taken 10 am 4 pm (Tuesdays, Wednesday and Thursdays in July and August; Monday to Friday thereafter). Please remember that the parish office is not open in the evening or on weekends. BECOMING CATHOLIC If you are an adult or teenager who is not baptized (or was baptized in another Christian community) and is interested in becoming a member of the Catholic Church or if you are an adult or teenager who has been baptized and wants to receive First Holy Communion and Confirmation, you are invited to become part of a process of spiritual growth and development known as RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, JULY 27, 2014 Mrs. Colette Vail, principal of Saint Joseph School, is delighted to announce that a $20,000 donation to Saint Joseph School s scholarship fund has been made by the John Di Marchi Family. This very generous contribution will make it possible for families with financial need to be able to offer their children the blessings of a Catholic education. In the 75 years since its establishment, Saint Joseph School has offered a quality Catholic education to generations of children in our area. With the help of those like the Di Marchi family who are committed to sharing the values of our Catholic faith along with blue ribbon academic preparation, Saint Joseph School looks forward to serving generations more to come. The Legion of Mary invites you to attend. LEARN ABOUT THE BIBLE GROW IN YOUR FAITH! People often express an interest in learning more about the Bible and in better understanding the Word of God. Here at Saint Joseph we have a way to do just that. It is called the Great Adventure Bible Series. Saint Joseph Parish has enjoyed participating in this nationally known DVD-based program since New groups are now forming for The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation. We expect to have one daytime group and one evening group. The series will begin in late September. To find out more about this parish-based Bible Study Program please visit ascensionpress.com or contact Pat Fakharzadeh at or her at bible@sjcnj.org ARCHBISHOP CALLS FOR PRAYER In response to the recent bloodshed in Israel and Gaza, The Most Reverend John J. Myers, Archbishop of Newark, has called on all people of faith and conscience to pray for an end to hostilities and the beginning of constructive talks to a peaceful solution to the strife and to unrest in the Holy Land. Echoing the words of St. Pope John XXIII that all men and women of good will are bound by the task of pursuing peace, Archbishop Myers said: It is imperative that we pray that our leaders in Washington and other nations in the world have the wisdom to seek peaceful solutions to violent conflicts. We must also pray that they be strong in undertaking the humanitarian efforts needed to end the suffering of the victims of this violence. The Archbishop also said that no one benefits when Israelis or Palestinians die. It is critical that the world s powers work to find a political solution that ensures not only physical safety, but also a future that secures human rights, religious freedom and economic opportunity for all in Israel and Palestine.
