Sunday Collection for Week of May 17, 2015 BASKET PARISHPAY TOTAL $7,919 $4.021 $11,940 STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. I CORINTHIANS 12:4-6 By giving each of us different gifts, God made sure that the Church would have the right combination of time, talent and treasure needed to do His work. However, if one of us does not use our gifts, God s plan goes unfulfilled. Some important work is left undone. GARDEN OF SAINTS NEWS The completion of our Garden of Saints with beautiful new statues of Our Blessed Mother, Saint Joseph, Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Anthony of Padua and Saint The re se, the Little Flower, has unfortunately been slightly delayed due to weather-related issues. The memorial pavers for the St. Anthony shrine that were ordered in the fall will be installed very soon. Parishioners can still reserve an engraved brick to be placed in front of any of the statues, or in the Commemorative Path by the church. See page 6 of this bulletin for details on how to order. 3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK At one point in 1864, a Confederate force under General Jubal Early drew close enough to Washington to put it at risk. President Lincoln decided to visit the troops of Fort Stevens to bolster their spirits, as they prepared to defend the city. The post s commander unwisely invited the president to stand over the parapet for a look at the Southern positions, which he did, when immediately shots rang out, hitting a few feet from where Lincoln stood. This startled a young captain, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., into crying out: Get down, you damn fool! Twenty years later, Holmes, by then a nationally prominent figure, was invited to give a speech to the citizens of Keene, New Hampshire, on Memorial Day, the holiday created to honor the soldiers who died in the Civil War. Holmes called Memorial Day the most sacred of the year and expressed his expectation that it would always be observed with reverence and pride. But even if I am wrong, even if those who are to come after us are to forget all that we hold dear, and the future is to teach and kindle its children in ways as yet unrevealed, it is enough for us that to us this day is dear and sacred. For one hour on this day when we decorate their graves the dead come back and live with us. I see them now, more than I can number, as once I saw them on this earth. He went on to say that the generation that took part in the war would forever be marked by its experience and would always look upon life in a more profound way because of it. While we are permitted to scorn nothing but indifference, and do not pretend to undervalue the worldly rewards of ambition, we have seen with our own eyes, beyond and above the gold fields, the snow heights of honor, and it is for us to bear the report to those who come after us. As we pass through this weekend, may we be mindful of all who have given their lives for America s freedoms throughout our national history. And may we pray, too, for the safe return of our military personnel who serve in today s dangers. In Eastern Church tradition, a troparion is a stanza of religious poetry used on various liturgical days. Here is a beautiful one, dating to some time from the 6 th to the 8 th century, associated with today s feast of Pentecost: Blessed are You, O Christ our God, who did make the fishermen wise, sending the Holy Spirit on them, and by them netting the whole world. David Hubba 3 SERVING GOD AND COUNTRY A MEMORIAL DAY SALUTE TO OUR HEROES MAY 25 Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Newark will once again join with approximately 1,000 other Catholic cemeteries nationwide to celebrate Serving God and Country: A Memorial Day Salute to our Heroes. With that in mind, Memorial Day Mass celebrations will be held on Monday, May 25 at 11:00 am in the following cemeteries (with the main celebrants as listed): Most Reverend John J. WOMEN'S CORNERSTONE MEETING MAY 27 This Wednesday Night, May 27, marks the beginning of Cornerstone XXIV. Our first meeting with our new Director, Judy Rosenberg, and our new Facilitator, Carol Winkler, will begin at 8 :00 pm in the Knights of Columbus Hall on River Road in New Milford. Come and join us as we begin our journey toward our Cornerstone Weekend in March. Even if you haven't been part of Cornerstone in the past, you are cordially welcome to join us as we pray, share, sing and enjoy fellowship with each other! We hope to see you on Wednesday night! CPR COURSE OFFERED AGAIN JUNE 1 Due to additional interest, Saint Joseph Parish will offer another class in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use of the AED (automated external defibrillator). The class will be held on Monday, June 1 from 7:00-10:00 pm in the Parish Life Center on Grove Street behind the lower school. Cost is $50. 5 PENTECOST SUNDAY ~ MAY 24, 2015 PILGRIMAGE TO SPAIN & PORTUGAL OCTOBER MINISTRY OF MOTHERHOOD MONTHLY MEETING MAY 27 Join Fr. Roy Regaspi on a 10-day pilgrimage to Portugal and Spain to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the birth of St. Teresa of Avila. In addition to visiting the medieval city of Avila, the church where St. Teresa had frequent visions and the convent that contains her relics, pilgrims will also spend time at Fatima and the Shrine of Our Lady where three local shepherd children saw the Virgin Mary. As Fr. Roy tells us: Our pilgrimage through Portugal and Spain offers an invitation to look at Faith in Christ through the eyes of mystics and great saints. St. Teresa s intimate encounters with God offer a challenge to everyone to see with the eyes of faith and then act courageously. The experience at Fatima and beyond will offer moments of healing in mind, body and spirit. Departing from Newark, the pilgrimage will travel from Lisbon to Santarem and Fatima (and the Shrine of Fatima), to Alba de Tormes (the burial place of St. Teresa), to Salamanca ( the Golden City ) and Avila, then to Madrid (and the famous Prado Museum), El Escorial (built as King Philip I s residence, which now serves as a monastery, royal palace, museum and school), and ending at Toledo (the ancient capital that so inspired the famous artist El Greco). If you are a busy mom with little time to nourish your spiritual life, come relax, reflect, and enjoy a wonderful and prayerful evening out! SAFETY FIRST HELP WITH OUR WALK-IN DINNER PROGRAM AT HACKENSACK SHELTER JUNE 2 A special thank you to the Oradell DPW for responding promptly to our request to remove the tree on Harrison Street that was presenting a potential safety hazard. On Tuesday, June 2, Saint Joseph Social Concerns Committee will be preparing and serving a hot dinner for approximately 130 people in need at the Bergen County Housing, Health & Human Services Shelter on River Street in Hackensack. If you would like to be a part of this by helping to prepare and/or serve the dinner or by making a donation to help cover the cost, it will certainly be appreciated!
