Mt 27:32 The Lord calls us to love God and to love our neighbor. Every day we are presented with opportunities to love our neighbor and help him carry his cross. These opportunities aren t usually big events, they are usually ordinary occurrences like helping someone carry their groceries or holding the door open for someone. The key is putting the other person s needs before your own and not expecting anything in return. Through annual grants, CHM funds catechesis, seminarian education, lay ministry training, and other essential pastoral programs to needy dioceses across the United States. WEEKLY CONFESSION Confessions are heard every Monday night in Lent from 6:30 7pm and on Saturdays from 4 5 pm (throughout the year including Holy Saturday) in the Reconciliation Room near the main entrance of the church. The Parish Office/Rectory is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The Office will be CLOSED on Good Friday, April 18.

3 PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD, APRIL 13, 2014 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK The time has come for our yearly Holy Week retreat. Beginning with today s Palm Sunday s remembrance of the Lord s entry into Jerusalem as Messiah, the Church celebrates the greatest of Christ s gifts with exuberant gratitude. This week of salvation culminates in the great liturgies of the Easter Triduum (the three holy days ). At Holy Thursday evening s Mass of the Lord s Supper we will recall and relive the first Eucharist. In an upper room in Jerusalem, after he memorably showed us the meaning of humble service by washing the feet of his disciples, Jesus prayed over the loaf of bread and the cup of wine they shared, calling them his very body and blood. We will renew these events in worship, honor the Blessed Sacrament in song and procession, and enthrone it for adoration. In the powerful moments of Good Friday s stark Celebration of the Lord s Passion we will read together St. John s account of the suffering and death of Jesus. Afterwards, we will all come forward to venerate the wood of the cross, on which hung the Savior of the world. Then we will approach the altar of sacrifice to receive Our Lord in Holy Communion. Holy Week comes to its climax in the Easter Masses of the Resurrection. Saturday night s Easter Vigil Mass, the most solemn of all our liturgies, is a summons to us to renew our Baptismal life. After our brand new Paschal Candle is lit from the flames of the Easter fire, its light is then distributed throughout the darkened church and the joyous Exultet is sung. Readings of key biblical passages then follow. At this Mass, and the other Masses of Easter, we also renew our Profession of Catholic Faith. These liturgies are intensely alive and lead us into an active celebration of the mysteries they communicate. When the silent waiting of Holy Saturday gives way to the joyful acclamations of the Easter alleluias, we are proclaiming our Easter faith with full hearts: Christ is risen! He is truly risen! To fully appreciate and experience the mysteries of the Easter Triduum, we have to make a dedicated effort to detach ourselves from the many worldly preoccupations that can so easily surround and distract us. It can be challenging for us to make these days a time of serious and prayerful reflection by being in the world but not of the world, but, as St. Paul long ago reminded us: We have not received the spirit of the world but the spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the things freely given us by God (1 Cor 2, 12). 4 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ AN EVENING OF REFLECTION FOR ALL LITURGICAL MINISTERS APRIL 29 LIVING STATIONS OF THE CROSS Saint Joseph Parish will offer two very special and prayerful reenactments of Christ s Passion this Lenten season. Liturgical Ministers: Please mark your calendars for Tuesday, April 29 at 7:30 pm for an Evening of Reflection in the Upper Church. Light refreshments will follow in Mary s Chapel. In the spirit of the Easter Season, Msgr. Hubba will reflect on our Baptism renewal and our other Sacraments of Initiation. This is always a wonderful opportunity for all Saint Joseph Liturgical Ministers Altar Servers, Readers, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Music to come together both spiritually and as a community. On Tuesday, April 15, Saint Joseph School eighth graders will present their annual Passion Play at 2pm in the Upper Church. On Good Friday, April 18, at 7:30 pm in the Upper Church, our High School Youth Group T.A.R.G.E.T. will present a Living Stations of the Cross. All are welcome. MARY S WAY OF THE CROSS FOR WOMEN APRIL 16 BINGO & BASKET APRIL 24 Saint Joseph Social Concerns Committee will sponsor a Bingo & Basket and Tricky Tray to benefit our Brother/Sister Parish of St. Joseph in Jersey City on Thursday evening, April 24, in our lower school gym. It promises to be a prayerful, spirit-filled, life changing day! The Collection for the Holy Land, which will be taken up at Saint Joseph Parish on Good Friday at 3 pm service, is in the words of Paul VI "not only for the Holy Places but above all for those pastoral, charitable, educational, and social works which the Church supports in the Holy Land for the welfare of their Christian brethren and of the local communities." SUPPORT CHRISTIANS IN THE HOLY LAND It is with the funds from the Good Friday Collection that Holy Land Franciscans (serving there since 1209) provide presence, care and service to the people who are living in the Holy Land. You can help preserve important shrines critical in the history of the Christian Faith, support pastoral care to the Christian community and provide for the poor through housing development and scholarship opportunities. You can help to preserve Christianity in the Holy Land by donating to the Holy Land Collection. Registration is $25 for adults; $20 for college students (18-22) and senior citizens (65+). HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH GROUP SUNDAY, MAY 4 at 12:30 pm LOWER CHURCH Students in grades 9 through 12 are cordially invited to attend the grand reopening of regular T.A.R.G.E.T. Youth Group meetings at Saint Joseph Parish. T.A.R.G.E.T., which stands for Teen, Activities, Religious, Group, Entertaining and Terrific, is an active program for high school-aged students that combines spiritual, social and service activities, led by peers and assisted by adult volunteers. Join Father Andrew at the 12:30 pm Mass in Mary s Chapel on Sunday, May 4, and then gather at the Parish Life Center immediately afterward for our first meeting. Refreshments will be served. It doesn t matter what high school you attend. Come and be a part of this great youth program. FIRST HOLY COMMUNION STEWARDSHIP PROJECT The Archdiocesan Office of Development & Stewardship reports that the Chancery has received over 300 dresses and 100 suits for children in need throughout the Archdiocese who will be making their First Holy Communions. David J. Casazza We extend our sympathies to the parishioners of St. Peter the Apostle Parish, River Edge, upon the death of their former pastor, Monsignor David Casazza. Msgr. Casazza was born in Hoboken and attended Seton Hall University and The Immaculate Conception Seminary in Darlington. He was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Newark in In 1945, he volunteered for the U.S. Navy Chaplain Corps serving in Washington, D.C. and then with the second Marine Division in Japan. During the Korean Conflict, he returned to active duty serving with the Marines in California, North Carolina, and then with the 1st Marine Division in Viet Nam (where he was awarded the Legion of Merit with the Combat V). His naval assignments included serving aboard aircraft carriers, at a naval hospital, as Force Chaplain of the Amphibious Force Pacific Fleet, and as Senior Chaplain at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Upon his retirement from the Navy in 1970, he served as pastor of St. Peter the Apostle from 1970 until he retired from active ministry in JOIN IN THE CELEBRATION OF TWO NEW SAINTS APRIL 27 At the Cathedral Basilica The canonizations of Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II will be celebrated in Rome on Sunday, April 27, His Grace, Archbishop Myers, will be joining in those celebrations in Rome. On that same day, our Coadjutor Archbishop, The Most Reverend Bernard A. Hebda, will lead our Archdiocesan celebration as he presides at a Holy Hour with the Divine Mercy Chaplet and Sung Evening Prayer in our Cathedral Basilica beginning at 3:00 pm. We encourage everyone to join in this blessed and magnificent event in the life of our Church and the world.
