3 ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST, JUNE 24, 2012 RECENT BAPTISMS AT OUR PARISH PASTOR S COLUMN GOOD-BYE & HELLO Last weekend, June 16 & 17, was Father Raul s Farewell Weekend. Father spoke at each of our Masses, where he expressed his thanks for the love and support he felt from the people of our parish for the past six years. There was an informal reception following each Mass where many parish members had the opportunity to express their personal thanks to Father Raul for his ministry and to wish him well. He will be missed by all of us at Saint Joseph Parish. Father Raul set off this past Wednesday, June 20, for his new assignment in the Diocese of Winona in Minnesota. Father Raul s new contact information appears below. Father Raul Silva Queen of Angels Parish 1001 E. Oakland Ave Austin, MN padreraulsilva@gmail.com Max Edward son of Edward & Eileen Costello baptized Sunday, June 17 Luca Joseph & Delilah Nancy Children of Elizabeth Bertini baptized Sunday, June 17 For information about our parish baptism program, please contact Anne Annunziato at the parish office ( ) (office@sjcnj.org) A PRAYER FOR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY O God our Creator, through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society. We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith. Father Raul receives a parting gift from grateful members of our parish. On the same day as Father Raul left us, our new parochial vicar, Father Andrew Park, arrived in the afternoon. That is how priestly assignments usually work. Someone leaves in the morning and his replacement arrives in the afternoon. It s a Good-Bye and a Hello separated by just a few hours. Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us this great land will always be "one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. (We encourage you to pray this prayer daily.) Please join me in welcoming Father Andrew Park to our parish. As you may imagine, it is not easy for a priest to leave one parish where he made a home and then go to a new parish where he does not know anyone. Love, Father Tom Iwanowski 3
4 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION FOR 2012/2013 TERM REGISTRATION DUE DATE JULY 1 Current Students All of our currently registered students will be receiving their registration letters and forms. Parish Registration All families enrolled in the Religious Education Program must be registered parishioners of St. Joseph Parish. If you are not registered with the parish, please call the Rectory ( ) to speak with one of the priests and register. Volunteers Needed to Staff the Religion Classes Volunteers are the heart of the Religious Education Program. Volunteers staff our classrooms and aid in overseeing the school buildings when class is in session. With close to 900 students in our program, you can only imagine the number of volunteers it takes to help make this program work. Without our volunteer staff we would not be able to offer our young people a quality program guiding them in the formation of our Catholic Faith. Whether you are the parent of a student or a caring parishioner who enjoys working with children, please take a few moments to prayerfully consider giving of your time and talents as a catechist. Remember, as you undertake this task, you are helping to give the Gift of Faith to the young people of our parish. If you would like further detailed information about volunteering, please contact the Religious Education Office at ( ). We invite you visit the new Religious Education Website for news, schedules, download forms and updates. (sjcreligioused.blogspot.com) ST. JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ 4 THE IMPORTANCE OF PARISH REGISTRATION As you can tell from the article to the left, being a registered parishioner is important for enrollment in the Religious Education Program and preparation for the sacraments. Not only is Parish registration important for our families with children, it is important for the parish and for individuals. 5 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT RELIGIOUS LIBERTY What do we mean by religious liberty? Religious liberty is the first liberty granted to us by God and protected in the First Amendment to our Constitution. It includes more than our ability to go to Mass on Sunday or pray the Rosary at home. It also encompasses our ability to contribute freely to the common good of all Americans. What is the First Amendment? The First Amendment of the U.S. Bill of Rights states the following: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. What does shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion mean? This phrase, known as the Establishment Clause, started out as a prohibition on Congress either establishing a national religion or interfering with the established religions of the states. It has since been interpreted to forbid state establishments of religion, to forbid governmental preference (at any level) of one religion over another, and to forbid direct government funding of religion. What does prohibiting the free exercise thereof mean? This phrase, known as the Free Exercise Clause, generally protects citizens and institutions from government interference with the exercise of their religious beliefs. It sometimes mandates the accommodation of religious practices when such practices conflict with federal, state, or local laws. What did our first president, George Washington, say about religious freedom? : "If I could have entertained the slightest apprehension that the Constitution framed in the Convention, where I had the honor to preside, might possibly endanger the religious rights of any ecclesiastical society, certainly I would never have placed my signature to it; and if I could now conceive that the general government might ever be so administered as to render the liberty of conscience insecure, I beg you will be persuaded that no one would be more zealous than myself to establish effectual barriers against the horrors of spiritual tyranny, and every species of religious persecution." (Letter to the United Baptist Churches in Virginia, 1789.) ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST, JUNE 24, Where are the roots of religious liberty? Religious liberty is inherent in our very humanity, hardwired into each and every one of us by our Creator. Religious liberty is also prior to the state itself. It is not merely a privilege that the government grants us and that can be taken away at will. What have Popes said about the issue? Blessed Pope John Paul II: [T]he most fundamental human freedom [is] that of practicing one s faith openly, which for human beings is their reason for living. (Address to Diplomatic Corps, 13 Jan. 1996) Pope Benedict XVI: [Religious freedom] is indeed the first of human rights, not only because it was historically the first to be recognized but also because it touches the constitutive dimension of man, his relation with his Creator. (Address to Diplomatic Corps, 10 Jan ) and The distinction between Church and State, between God and Caesar, remains fundamental to Christianity. (Deus Caritas Est, No. 28.) The Church has a proper independence and is structured on the basis of her faith as a community which the State must recognize. Why does the mandate to cover contraceptives, including abortion-causing drugs, violate religious liberty? In short, it is the element of government coercion against conscience, and government intrusion into the ordering of Church institutions. This is not a matter of whether contraception may be prohibited by the government. This is not even a matter of whether contraception may be supported by the government. Instead, it is a matter of whether religious people and institutions may be forced by the government to provide coverage for contraception or sterilization, even if that violates their religious beliefs. (Oral Testimony before the House Judiciary Committee, Feb. 28, 2012.) The vast majority of Catholics practice artificial birth control. Some argue that the church is out-of-step with modern family realities? Again, the issue isn t whether individuals practice artificial birth control. Our teachings may not be popular, but that doesn t mean that the State can force us to violate our own teachings in our own institutions. Aren t you making too much of this issue? Religious liberty is a cornerstone of our democracy. The HHS mandate fundamentally alters the fragile balance between government and religious groups created by the framers of our Constitution. The same First Amendment that protects religious freedom protects freedom of the press. We wouldn t stand for the State telling newspapers or news programs what to write or whom to interview.
6 ST. JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from St. Luke Chapter 1:57-66, 80 When we were born the first thing that our parents did was to think of what our name would be. Whether we would be named after our mother or father, or after a relative or friend, or maybe after a saint or some famous person. In today s Gospel, we learn about John the Baptist. He did not get his name from his parents. He got his name from God. God told his parents that he was to be named John which means God is gracious. God wanted his name to be John because John the Baptist was meant to do great things. IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL KIDS STARS OF ST. JOSEPH Summer Performing Arts Camp Attention all students entering grades 4-8 in the Fall. Note: Registration Deadline is June 30. IMPORTANT MESSAGE Today is the last Sunday that we will celebrate The Liturgy of the Word With Children. The Liturgy of the Word with Children Committee wishes everyone a happy and healthy summer. Have fun and stay safe. We will see you after Labor Day. God told his parents to name the baby John. Therefore the baby was named John the Baptist. MISSION OF THE WEEK I will ask my parents about how I got my name and whom I am named after. 6
