PRAYER FOR OUR NATION God of our forebears, in tumultuous times our ancestors made their way to a new land, seeking prosperity and peace. The wealth of a new nation lay before them, as well as the challenge to use wisely the gifts of the good earth and the industriousness of a peopleforged in the crucible of revolution and the high-minded ideals of life and liberty. Strengthen within us the pursuit of justice,the desire for equality, the love of true freedom. May all the citizens of our country work unceasingly to promote the common good so that all may share in the pursuit of happiness sought by the founders of our land. Amen. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS RECOGNIZES EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph Church sacristan, minister of Holy Communion, and longtime member of Cornerstone, Tom Moran (shown far left), was recognized for his many years of commitment and service to Saint Joseph Church. Two eighth grade graduates of Saint Joseph School, Elena Ladron-Posadas (second from right) and Olivia D Ambrosio (far right) each received a $1,000 scholarship. They were selected based on their leadership skills, scholastic honors, involvement in school activities and their personal essays. 3 THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ JULY 1, 2018 A WARM WELCOME TO OUR NEW PAROCHIAL VICAR! Saint Joseph Parish is delighted to welcome Father Anthony Di Stefano as our new parochial vicar. We are privileged to be Fr. Anthony s first assignment as an ordained priest and look forward to making him feel very much at home. After entering Immaculate Conception Seminary of Seton Hall University in 2013, Fr. Anthony graduated with a Master s degree in Divinity and was the recipient of the prestigious Pope St. John Paul II Award for Academic Excellence. He served as transitional deacon at Holy Family Church in Nutley, NJ. Although newly ordained (on May 26, 2018), Fr. Anthony comes to us with a unique wealth of experience. Born in Brooklyn, he attended the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Assumption School in Perth Amboy where his formal faith formation began. (He was blessed to be able to have his second grade religion teacher, Sister Yosaphata, attend his ordination!) His father worked in international trade and during his high school years Fr. Anthony, his mother Virginia and older sister Donna traveled with Anthony Sr. a great deal. He estimates that he has spent time in 35 different countries. Back in New Jersey, he attended Rutgers College. When his father passed away during his first year there, he returned home to help take care of his family and to continue his education at Rutgers as a commuting student. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree and a double major in history and English literature. Fr. Anthony then decided to pursue a career in law. He attended Rutgers School of Law in Camden graduating with a Juris Doctorate degree and was admitted to the Bar. Before entering the seminary, he practiced law for a total of 18 years. During this time he (continued above) co-founded the law firm, Biancamano & Di Stefano in Edison, NJ, and served as its managing partner. When his mother became seriously ill in 2006, Fr. Anthony turned to the Church. He found comfort and strength in God at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Church in Scotch Plains, NJ, where he was inspired by its parishioners and encouraged by its pastor, Fr. John Palladino. He began attending daily Mass and serving as a reader. He ultimately became involved in many spiritual and social outreach ministries there including extraordinary minister of Holy Communion and involvement in Liturgy preparation. As a member of St. Bart s Scripture Group, he met and worked with many RCIA candidates, which led to his becoming lay assistant coordinator of the RCIA program there. During that time, Fr. Anthony discovered that he had begun his own Faith journey...one that would lead him to the priesthood. As Fr. Anthony told New Jersey Catholic, My involvement in the church rekindled thoughts of the priesthood that I had since my childhood. Though he thought he could balance both his career and service to the church in lay ministry, that changed when he had a very special experience on All Saints Day in He had been serving as extraordinary minister during the Mass. When he returned to his seat after Communion, he sensed a hand on his shoulder. As Fr. Anthony tells it, A voice whispered in my ear, You have a calling. The voice had come from a man who was sitting with his wife behind him. Visitors to the area, they had been stranded by Superstorm Sandy and came to the nearest church. I am convinced that the voice I heard was God, himself, asking me once more to answer his call and offer the gift of myself to him in the priesthood. There is a saying that priests fall in love with their first parishes. We are very glad to have Fr. Anthony here at Saint Joseph and sincerely hope that that will be the case for him. Welcome, Fr. Anthony! SHARE YOUR FAITH Adult volunteers are needed to teach our parish seventh and eighth graders in our Religious Education program. Classes meet on Wednesdays from 4:45-6:10 pm or from 6:30-7:55 pm. All training will be provided. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to share the beautiful gift of your Faith, to help our next generation to have the same solid foundation you have, and to ensure a strong future for our Church. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION JULY 4 Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be held on Wednesday July 4 in Mary's Chapel in the lower church from 9:00 am 5:00 pm. The Legion of Mary invites you to attend. MONTHLY PRAYER WITH MARY JULY 14 The Legion of Mary invites you to Monthly Prayer with Mary which will be held on Saturday, July 14 after the 8:30 Mass in Mary's Chapel. We shall have recitation of the Rosary and a brief reflection on the virtues of Mary. 3

Chiarella Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted. And they had then a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. So Pilate said to them, Whom do you want me to release for you, Barabbas or Jesus who is called, Christ? MATT: 27:15-21 I stood among the madding crowd at that unholy hour wondering what man would die by peoples cruel power. The guards led out a murderer, Barabbas by name, and then a blood-drenched teacher who had healed the blind and lame. Call for an appointment come for a tour! There slid like vipers through the throng, some priests and elder spies, like those who had bribed Judas with silver coin and lies. Now with whispered promises and plans of treachery, they cursed the saving Jesus and set Barabbas free. So Pilate asked in mocking tone, What shall I do with Christ? As one, the howling crowd replied, Let him be crucified!
