John 11:40 Many of us say that we believe in God. We go to church on Sunday. We volunteer for events at our parish. But when life gets hard, the pressure is on, things aren t going our way, do we really believe, do we really put our trust in the Lord? When we live a life of gratitude, being thankful for the gifts we have been given, we really do see that God is providing all that we need. THANK YOU TO OUR AAA DONORS To date, 235 donors from Saint Joseph Parish have pledged $49,233 to the Archbishop s Annual Appeal. Their generosity makes it possible for the Church to address pressing human needs, both spiritual and material, including educating children, helping Catholic Charities reach out to the poor, providing programs for youth, training men for the priesthood, and more. Our parish goal is $64,000. It is not too late to make your pledge and to help Saint Joseph Parish help others. Our bulletin can also be viewed at sjcnj.org CATHOLIC HOME MISSION APPEAL APRIL The Catholic Home Missions Appeal (CHM) supports dioceses in the United States and its territories that lack the resources to provide basic pastoral ministry to their populations. Through annual grants, CHM funds catechesis, seminarian education, lay ministry training, and other essential pastoral programs to needy dioceses across the United States. The Home Missions Appeal impacts the lives of nearly 9 million Catholics. Please be generous when the collection is taken up in our parish next weekend. 2

3 FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT, APRIL 6, 2014 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK The great writer Samuel Johnson made it a point to reflect on the condition of his religious faith as each Easter approached. In 1751, he wrote: He that feels himself alarmed by his conscience, anxious for the attainment of a better state and afflicted by the memory of his past faults, may justly conclude that the great work of repentance has begun. Catholics would describe these kinds of thoughts as the work of God s grace, which is forever inviting those who have sinned to accept his forgiveness and start walking the right path again. As we draw near Easter, we enter a time that traditionally summons us to confess our sins and receive God s mercy. Our parish will offer many opportunities for you to receive the sacrament of Penance, with all its power and consolation. Our Lenten Penance service is this Monday evening at 7:30. After communal prayers for awakening and expressing our sorrow for our sins, the priests of the parish will hear confessions until everyone has had the opportunity to be absolved. Also, in addition to our usual 4:00 to 5:00 time for confessions each Saturday, we will offer the sacrament from 6:30 to 7:00 the next two Monday evenings (April 7 and 14) and after the and. Masses of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Holy Week (April 14-16). The last scheduled confessions before Easter will be on Holy Saturday (April 19) from 4:00 to 5:00. 4 LENTEN FOOD DRIVE TODAY Our Lenten Food Drive takes place this weekend. Please bring your donations to the rectory garage before 1:45pm on Sunday. The donations will go to the Food Pantries at Ascension Church in New Milford and St. John the Evangelist in Bergenfield. If you prefer, you may make a monetary donation. BINGO & BASKET APRIL 24 The Saint Joseph Social Concerns Committee will be sponsoring a Bingo & Basket and Tricky Tray fundraiser to benefit our Brother/Sister Parish of St. Joseph in Jersey City on Thursday evening, April 24, in our lower school gym. JOIN IN THE CELEBRATION OF TWO NEW SAINTS APRIL 27 The Church and all men and women of good will throughout the world will celebrate the canonizations of Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II on Sunday, April 27, 2014, when our Holy Father, Pope Francis, presides at the Sacred Liturgies in Rome. His Grace, Archbishop Myers, will be joining in those celebrations in Rome. On that same day, our Coadjutor Archbishop, The Most Reverend Bernard A. Hebda, will lead our Archdiocesan celebration as he presides at a Holy Hour with the Divine Mercy Chaplet and Sung Evening Prayer in our Cathedral Basilica beginning at 3:00 pm. 6 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ THE LOURDES KIDS The American Special Children's Pilgrimage Group, also known as ASCPG or "The Lourdes Kids, are a non-profit, all-volunteer organization that sponsors an annual Easter Week journey for children and young adults with special physical and developmental needs to Lourdes. The trip is unique for many reasons, including the fact that parents do not accompany their children; rather, caring and trained volunteer helpers travel with them and create a family atmosphere for a once-in-a-lifetime experience! Volunteers raise funds so that the special pilgrims travel free of charge. Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee THANK YOU TO SAINT JOSEPH PARISH On behalf of American Special Children Pilgrim Group (ASCPG) we would like to thank the parish of Saint Joseph for supporting our Irish Soda Bread fundraiser. We raised $700, which will help send a special needs child to Lourdes. In Fr. Andrew s homily he said, "If you love Jesus, be the person to change the world. Make changes in others lives." We thank you for your help in changing the life of a special needs child and their family. The week spent in Lourdes will change the lives of all involved. Thank you once again for your parish support. Saint Joseph Parish will be in our prayers as we journey to Lourdes during Easter. He has matured, gained confidence and truly feels blessed that he was able to have experienced this trip. He is still walking around the house singing the songs and rereading for the 100th time the kind comments that were written [to him] by the Youth Group. I truly understand what a huge undertaking this trip is - and how much commitment, time and energy you all put into it. I just wanted to personally thank you.
